Big changes coming to Ghostbusters Fans in the next few weeks. I am in the process of transitioning the Ghostbusters Fans Wiki into a new, more technologically advanced "MediaWiki". The old system was custom written by me, and while it has served its purpose for 4+ years the time has come to move to something more advanced.

The new Wiki system is the same system being used by Wikipedia. New pages can be created on the fly, by anyone. Editors can be assigned to make more serious changes. Pages will be easier to find, information will be better formatted, and content will be richer.

That being said. This new Wiki will be a clean slate, and the current wiki has thousands of pages that need to be copied over. We need your help to facilitate the transition.

Here is what I need you to do:

Visit the new Wiki here: http://www.gbfans.com/wiki/

Check out the pages that are currently there (a few hundred have already been added). Identify pages that need to be added and type those into the Search box. If they exist... work on them to make them better. If they don't exist.. Click Create Page.

Go to the existing wiki system on the main site and start copying and pasting information.

Once content has been imported over, the new Wiki will replace the old Wiki. (The old Wiki will be available as a back up while content is transferred over.) Don't worry about how the new Wiki currently looks. That will all be modified when the transition is made.

What are you waiting for!? GO! http://www.gbfans.com/wiki/

Note: Image uploads currently not working. Don't copy over images just yet, just worry about the core text and formatting.

I love mediawiki.

Once you get the code down, it's very easy to work. Are you going to have the subpages for tables and the like?

Explain what you mean specifically so I can understand.

Right now there are a lot of categories setup, and most pages are listed in one of those categories.

Here is a listing of categories: http://www.gbfans.com/wiki/Special:Categories

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Aykroyd

The box on the right is a table or as referred to in wiki, a infobox. When I made them for my wiki site, I had to make sub pages of sub pages of sub pages to get the code in place for the wiki. Unless they have changed it recently, the mediawiki is essentially a blank canvas and the user is required to make the sub pages for the tables. Similar to what you did with the pages you have created thus far.

One thing that I highly encourage, is to make the pages that are edited OKed by a mod or whomever you choose. The spam bots with these things are horrible!

Here is the wikicode for the dan aykroyd info box as an example. You will need to create all the subpages of wiki to make the box.

Yes.

That kind of stuff needs to be figured out and written. I'm not exactly sure how that all works, but if you have something you have done in the past that could be implemented please feel free!

Infoboxes now working.

I just gotta import a few more things and the navbox will be added. Also going to try for some neutrality headers as well.

No one has taken a shot at editing it that I can see... I can't do this alone!

Yes and no.

It won't count now.

But it will count once the system has been put into place permanently.

Also. Infoboxes, Navboxes.. etc are working.

Check out some examples:

http://www.gbfans.com/wiki/Ghostbusters
http://www.gbfans.com/wiki/Ghostbusters_II
http://www.gbfans.com/wiki/Citizen_Ghost

File uploads are also now working.

As are citations and references.

I am going to start helping with this stuff when I get back home on Sunday and I can use my actual computer.

Is there going to be any particular method you are going to want to follow with these pages? With the RGB episodes, they are pretty straight forward, but what about the books and the like?

http://www.gbfans.com/wiki/Main_Page#Sections_Started

I made a table similar to the one on wikipedia itself for the gbfans front page. I was just playing around with it, but there is room to add more.

This is going to be fun to work on.

I changed the links from Portals to regular pages.

I'm not sure if we're gonna use the Portal system for the main pages.

(I don't know much about them.)

I hear ya. Is there going to be a index built in the wiki? This will help stop the doubling up of pages?

Yes.

Right now I have main pages, and category pages. The category pages all redirect to the main pages. I was planning on having the main pages have listings of other pages to checkout.

There are also navboxes at the bottom which have links to the other main pages in the section. Each major section and subsection will have a Navbox. There are already a few in place Ghostbusters, Real Ghostbusters .

Now for something to do!

I have one episode of the Real Ghostbusters nearly done. Check it out here: http://www.gbfans.com/wiki/Ghosts_R_Us

Now there is always room for improvement, but right now I'd like to have someone focus on bringing over the content from the main site's wiki. We have the following that needs to be done on all Real Ghostbusters episode pages:

 • Updating the "infobox" with the appropriate information. The guts are already there on each page they just need to be updated with: Title Image, Episode Name, Episode Number, Airdate, Writers, and Previous Episode, Next Episode information.
 • Synopsis. The short synopsis needs to be added to the top of each page.
 • Plot. An additional long format plot should be added after the short synopsis and before the character listing.
 • The Character code needs to be copied over from the Ghosts R Us page (also shown below), and any other characters in the episode need to be listed below the character images. (We'll need to work on getting images of each character to add to each page.
 • Trivia should be copied over, formatted into a list using the * before each item.
 • Quotes need to be added. Indent, bold and italicized.
 • Screenshots need to be imported. (And sections renamed to Gallery). To do this, Save the images off of the old Wiki with the format of: "Episode Name Gallery #Imagenumber.jpg" Upload the images. These must be saved in order, and then posted in order.
 • Any references should be cited.

Here is the default character code:

Code:
<gallery>
File:Real_Ghostbusters_Peter_Venkman.jpg|link=Peter Venkman|<center>Peter Venkman</center>
File:Real_Ghostbusters_Egon_Spengler.jpg|link=Egon Spengler|<center>Egon Spengler</center>
File:Real_Ghostbusters_Ray_Stantz.jpg|link=Ray Stantz|<center>Ray Stantz</center>
File:Real_Ghostbusters_Winston_Zeddemore.jpg|link=Winston Zeddemore|<center>Winston Zeddemore</center>
File:Real_Ghostbusters_Janine_Melnitz.jpg|link=Janine Melnitz|<center>Janine Melnitz</center>
File:Real_Ghostbusters_Slimer.jpg|link=Slimer|<center>Slimer</center>
</gallery>

Any additional characters should be mentioned in a list after the gallery tag.

That's just work for 130 pages. We have thousands that need to be worked on. Everyone should grab one episode from these episode guides:

http://www.gbfans.com/real-ghostbusters/season-1/
http://www.gbfans.com/real-ghostbusters/season-2/
http://www.gbfans.com/real-ghostbusters/season-3/
http://www.gbfans.com/real-ghostbusters/season-4/
http://www.gbfans.com/real-ghostbusters/season-5/
http://www.gbfans.com/real-ghostbusters/season-6/
http://www.gbfans.com/real-ghostbusters/season-7/

And find the eqivalent page on the new Wiki:

http://www.gbfans.com/wiki/Real_Ghostbusters:_Season_1
http://www.gbfans.com/wiki/Real_Ghostbusters:_Season_2
http://www.gbfans.com/wiki/Real_Ghostbusters:_Season_3
http://www.gbfans.com/wiki/Real_Ghostbusters:_Season_4
http://www.gbfans.com/wiki/Real_Ghostbusters:_Season_5
http://www.gbfans.com/wiki/Real_Ghostbusters:_Season_6
http://www.gbfans.com/wiki/Real_Ghostbusters:_Season_7

If we get 130 people to take 10 minutes to get it done, we could have most of these pages done in minutes!

Also. To correct what I said earlier. I will be giving out Supporting Memberships. I will just have to do it manually. And people who show good work in updating the Wiki will also be selected as editors later on!

Remember. Any mistakes can ALWAYS be fixed.

I know it will be a lot of work..

But it will just take some manpower to get it done.

For example. One person could go through all 132 episodes and copy the Character code on to every page. That would knock that off the list. That task could honestly be accomplished in under 20 minutes if someone where quick enough.

Another person could go through and copy the short synopsis from each old page on to each new page. That would knock that out. That's something that would take longer, but still fairly managable.

Someone could add the ==Plot== header to every page. Again only about 20 minutes to get through all of those.

Someone could change the wording ==Screenshots== to ==Gallery== pretty quickly as well.

All things that need to be done.. and can be done fairly quickly by one person.

Understood and it is very much appreciated.

I'll be checking out the Active Users list to see who is doing what.

http://www.gbfans.com/wiki/Special:ActiveUsers

My 1700 edits took no time at all!

Guys.

Josh and I have settled on a naming convention. When making a page that might be similar to other pages, please use this format:

Category: Topic

For example:

Mattel: Prop Replicas can be differentiated from another company's prop replicas (if someone makes some of course).

Another example:

Ghostbusters: Cast
Ghostbusters II: Cast

That would be better than just having a page called "Cast". Use the colon!

We've had a few guys help out with edits. Thank you very much guys!

For those of you sitting on the sidelines and want to help. Here are a few examples of what you can do RIGHT NOW.

1. Change Screenshots to Gallery. Just do a search for the pages that still say "Screenshots" instead of Gallery like this: http://www.gbfans.com/w/index.php?search=Screenshots

Then just scroll down to the Screenshots header and hit "Edit" on the right side. Change that to Gallery and boom. You've helped out a lot!
*DONE*

2. When on the page, look for the "Plot" header. If its not there, just throw it in after the Infobox using this code:

Code:
Plot
Its that simple!

3. See the section at the bottom of a Real Ghostbusters Episode Page that says "References"? Delete it! (Unless of course there are References on that page!)

Those are just a few things you can do right now to help!

There is of course a lot more you can do, just check out my previous list.

Open request for everyone. If anyone still has their Kenner toys in the package, can you please take pictures and send them to me. I am updating all the toys over on the new wiki and would appreciate if you could help me out with the images.

Thank you!
