Thought I better on a trap to finish my suit off ready for Halloween. As I not got the time to build one from scratch I thought I would update a Kenner ghost trap for this year and build a screen accurate one for next year.
Purchased a trap off eBay the other week. Not in the best of shape some stickers were pealing off and the handle was missing.
Image

Firstly took the trap apart which was difficult as all the screws were rusty and the heads were no good so had to drill the screws out. Painted the 2 main parts of the trap using black plastic paint which I got from Homebase for £9. Can be sprayed straight on so no primar is needed

Image

Image
Applied a few coats Inside and out so it completely covered up all the blue.
When the black was dry painted some of the detail in silver
Image

Image
For the trap doors I used some 3m tape the black and yellow stripe tape. The stripes are a little big for the size of the trap but this will see me by for Halloween
Image

Image

Painted the end where the wire exits the trap gold so it looks like a screen tube connector
Image
Image

This is all I've managed to get done so far as I have been working on my goggles and finishing my gizmo off as well.
The foot pedal has had a few coats of black paint but that is still drying at the moment.

Little more work done on the trap tonight. Added a led light and toggle switch next to where the handle is mounted.
Image
Used the same sort of light as what I used in my goggles.
Image

Image

Led off
Image
Light on
Image

Added a few cap heads to the trap to add a bit of detail to the trap
Image

Image
Trap is not screwed together that's why there is a gap between parts

Are you removing the door opening mechanism? I wanted to do the same thing with the switch and LED but they kept the doors from opening or closing. I ended up gutting the switch and just using the threads and the toggle lever.

I was going to keep the doors shut as they didnt seem to open when i first got the trap. The trap will always be on my belt anyway. the switch and led is really close to the mechanism. the doors still open by hand.

Looking great so far! I did something similar last year, but without electronics.

Really cool!

I have one of my old old ones laying around with no pedal, may have to do some work to it after seeing this!

Thats awesome. Honestly, I like the look of the RGB trap over the one in the movies... but I think that's something to do with the pedal.

Did a little more painting on the trap tonight to add some more detail.
Image
Painted the side trap knob black. Left the front face of the knob silver.
Image
Also painted the piece next to the trap knob black as well. Originally I was going to do it red but I ran out of red painted. I may still go and buy some and change it
Image
Added some detail to the hose end as well. Painted in the slots black for some detail.

I was thinking of this type of thing for the handle or I was going to buy a cheap Halloween broom stick and cut the end off it.

Either way, you go, I used GOOP and a TON of the stuff to gel up the inside U shape, and then put the handle on. Let it sit for a day or so and when its painted, it gives a pretty decent "weld"

Wheels painted silver.
Image
Wheels glued in place
Image
Added some more detail around the area where the red bar graph goes. Painted the surround silver to represent a aluminium plate.
Image
Cut the corner off the large danger sticker that is on the motherboard of the pack as I don't require this sticker as I have the gb2 batteries fitted, to use as the bar graph.
Image
Then added a few stickers to the side knob for detail. Cut a strip of white from off the corner of the sticker and a red triangle out of the large danger sticker

I love it man.. my one and only criticism is the doors... a single yellow stripe looks kind of wonky. With the amount of detail you're putting into it, it would almost be a shame to let that one bit spoil it all ;)

See if you can mask them and paint them with thinner stripes, maybe?

I almost wanna get my hands on one of these traps!

If I have time before the weekend I will mask off in the original positions on the doors and paint and paint them as you say it does look odd. If I don't have time then I will leave the tape on and sort out after Halloween.

After a comment about the tape I decided to remove the tápe and mask up the doors and paint the yellow stripes.
Image
So far the doors have had three coats of yellow paint. I also painted the piece by the side knob red so it looks like the movie trap
Image
So far three coats of red have been done.

The trap pedal is also painted black and dry.
Image
Also started adding some detail to the pedal. Painted the hose end gold to resemble a hose fitting. Also painted the buttons red.
A few more coats of red are needed

Ordered some 6mm internal diameter split hose of eBay. Same stuff used on the injector tube pipes to finish of the wire from the pedal to the trap
Image
Used this to place over the existing yellow hose on the trap.
Purchased dia 15 mm metal wardrobe rail to use for the handle. Cut to length to suit my hand with enough for fixing.
Bolted the other half of the Dixie cup bracket to the trap that came with my trap holster.
Screwed the trap together and added a few spare stickers next to the switch and on the side of the trap. Will add the danger ones as soon as I get some printed.

0 when the switch is on the off position. 1 when the switch is in the on position

Excellent conversion. Well done. Glad to see you took IPv6Freely's advice on the doors- it really completes the piece and gives it a great finish and compliments the rest of the detail work you put into it.

Cheers for the comments. Really glad I painted the doors. They look so much better than with the tape. Really please how it turned out. Will get some picks up tomorrow of it attached to my belt.

Few pics of the trap on the trap holder. Used one of the belt clips to hold the trap wire.

I painted my Kenner trap in a similar fashion. I found that the stupid pedal took the paint just fine until i used it; then it began flaking off. I had used enamel semi-gloss black paint on top of enamel or lacquer-based primer. I had seen someone on this board do a conversion from toy pedal to movie pedal so I did that instead to hide the blue pedal.

That said, your conversion looks pretty solid. I think I'll add the Allen head screws to mine like you did. The bit that you painted gold that pops on and off the trap when you take it apart I never liked. I always wanted to do something to it.

I Dremeled out the front of the trap where the red light sticker was and added a light there that blinks. I'll have to put some of my pics up sometime.

the paint I used for my nephews kenner trap pedal didnt flake off, it was just very sticky like when I painted his goggles, fingerprints would show up on it and a light coating would come off on your fingers
