I was watching a Conan O'Brien video from when he was at ILM in San Francisco. During some of the random b-roll shots there is the Vigo painting.
Sorry if this is already knowledge. I had no idea Lucas had the painting (or a copy of it?). Here is a link to the video, Vigo is about half way through it:

it keeps saying video is unavailable , maybe they meant it to be a secret.... maybe thats why episode one was bad , he had a violent prolonged trans formative psychic episode

Also, I think I spotted one of the Scoleri brothers in that video. It's toward the beginning, when the Asian guy walks through the double doors. It looks like a Scoleri on the left. I could be mistaken though; I'll be 21 in June, and they say your vision is one of the first things to go...

Sitting unframed and unprotected in an office hallway...
Gotta remember though, for a key prop like this one there would have been loads of copies. Especially considering all the digital trickery the boys at ILM pulled on ol' scourgey here. High-res scanners were not pretty in those days.
Though I would rather face the scourge of Carpathia than Conan O'brien in a mo-cap suit...
Good eyes, Donkey:
Though I'm 23, so if your eyes are going then mine are shot...
Great screen grabs! I had posted this same thing over at proptopia and there were some great screen grabs there too, I was going to copy and paste them here. But you saved me the touble, thanks.
boomerjinks- I'm not a Hyperspace member either and the video worked for me. It might be some other problem, I don't know?

If you're using Firefox and NoScript, try disabling NS (allow hyperspace.com). That's the only thing I can think of, I've noticed that noscript tends to block videos for some reason.

Has anyone been able to go and take measurements of the painting yet? I've got a background in Fine Arts/Painting, and I'm dying to create a screen accurate replica for my collection.

The prints Hotshot was offering were 5'x8', but I'm not convinced they were necessarily identical in size to the original. I'd prefer to know what the dimensions of the real one are.
Has it ever been know who actually did the painting and how? Was it 'painted' or done using a combination of photography because I remembering seeing an artical with the actor in costume and sepia makeup posing on a set piece and the finished painting next to him.

"I'll be back!" Vigo said it best.
I know the artist.
It is not a painting at all.
It is a photograph which was printed out and enhanced to make it look more like a painting. It was the only way they could do it to ensure that the "painting" looked exactly like the actor (because it comes to life).
I actually have a copy of the original painting concept that is pretty cool.

I'm pretty sure 10' is way off. I did a quick scaling based on various photos of people standing in front of the real item. 8 feet seems about right for the height, but if that's correct, then 5 wide feet is a little too narrow, which explains why Hotshot's prints seem to have the side edges cut off.
This is a scaling template I created a while back for getting accurate measurements of props and costumes. Based on a height of 96", the width would be about 64", which comes out to approximately life size.

glen eytchison and other artists from the 'pageant of the masters' festival were responsible for the vigo prop... well, and ILM artists, of course. i used to have a HUGE 20x24 behind-the-scenes photo from the ILM archives showing the artists working on the prop, with von homburg standing in full costume and facial appliances in the "painting set".
If you can find Bill Murray's height, you can use that to scale the painting as he stands in front of it when Peter sees Dana at the museum.
Also, don't buy Hotshot's prints of the paintings, he's still a blacklisted seller here and you should take his claim of having clemency with the studio in being able to reproduce them with a grain of salt.

like i said in my previous post, glen eytchison and other artists from the 'pageant of the masters' festival produced for the vigo prop. turnbull and rymar were both POM artists, and eytchison was the director of the festival. michael c. gross and ILM artists also worked on the prop...

I'm actually doing some similar measurements (using Bill Murray's height of 6' 3'' from an old online bio) and it looks like Vigo is slightly larger than my 5 x 8 foot canvas replica.
Right now, 107 inches (just about 9 feet). I'm trying to verify his height and a few other things. I will update you with more info as it comes available.
