Ok I have been holding on to this for a little while now. While doing the overhaul on my GB1 hero pack viewtopic.php?f=2&t=26356&start=30 I decided to retexture my BIgi330 shell. I had seen pchrisbosh1's Homax method viewtopic.php?f=42&t=27710 and knew that I didn't have the patience to use that method and had to find another way.

Here is what I did and was very pleased.

First mask off any areas you don't want texture.

Then using Rustoleum Textured paint give your shell a nice fairly thick coat. I sprayed it pretty thick around the ribs so that the texture would really show after primer and paint.

After spraying the texture you should have this look:

The best thing about doing it this way is there is very little wait time between coats. The texture paint says you can spray primer right away.

What you need to do now is remove the masking tape and begin to spray primer. I prefer the Rustoleum Automotive primer due to its quick drying. You need to give the shell 2 thick coats. All you need to do is wait until it is dry to the touch to add the 2nd coat.

Now is when you will want to take a dremel sanding barrel or some sort of sand paper to scratch the wood grain look into the ribs and cyclotron rings.

Once your 2nd coat of primer is dry to the touch you can spray your color. I prefer the Rustoleum Satin Black. You want to give the shell 2 even coats of black as well. What I do is spray the first coat, wait about 10 minutes and then starting from the same point as the first coat spray the 2nd. Be carefull though not to spray to heavy or you will get runs.

Here is what your texture should look like now

The satin black needs about 48 hours to fully cure before you being to work with the shell again but this whole process took me about 1 hour. When it dries your shell should look like this:

I hope this helps anyone short on patience like me. If you come up with a modification to my steps please feel free to post them here.

Thanks!
Joe

Really nice. I'll definitely be giving it a try.

Looks like a good method if you want your texture to be a little more subtle than the alternate wall-texture.

I wonder what throwing some hammered paint in the mix would do... may have to try this with the next pack.

I've used that method on other props, will have to try it on the next pack shell. Looks good!
