Is that the actual cover art?!

Why do the Gunmen get near photo-realistic artwork and the Ghostbusters are presented in a completely different and really jarring/ugly style?

I hope that isn't the artwork the Ghostbusters crossover ends up with, as it's absolutely ugly... the work of a complete amateur.

It's bloody awful. And makes no sense being presented as it is with those images of the Gunmen.

Bad show, IDW.

And is the no-ghost SUPPOSED to be over-lapping!? Are those crows!? Ugh, it's a horrible cover.

I wonder if Melanie Ortiz is gonna get to meet Dana Scully. It'll be the funniest thing since Egon met Roger.

It may be blasphemy, but I never really got into X-Files. I'll undoubtedly check it out since it's Burnham and Ghostbusters, though.

Some details following a little digging:

Hopes that Mel and Savage will meet Scully and Mulder will be dashed, as it looks like it's actually going to be the Lone Gunmen following things up rather than the two FBI agents. Seems it'll be a bit like Hoax Hunters, with Byers, Frohike and Langley looking into the urban legends of the Turtles, Crow and Ghostbusters.

Thankfully, it seems that the awful cover artwork above won't be what'll adorn the internal pages... Comic Book Resources attributes the cover art to Miran Kim, whilst Salvador Navarro will be handling the internal art. Here's some of Navarro's work on a G.I.Joe: Retaliation prequel comic he pencilled: Link

I'm pretty excited for this cross over so i'll give it a go for sure. Navarro's art seems to be very detailed and clean not to mention it's written by Erik so I am excited to see how this turns out!

Those models for the GBs are god awful. Look at Ray's boots!

I like how everyone hates Miran Kim's representation of the Ghostbusters on her cover when they're on model with Dan's designs. I'm not saying they're a good rendering of those designs but they are definitely Dan's models.

Elvis cover is much better. Too bad its probably a variant.

It's not the model specifics that's drawing the criticism, it's the fact that Kim has depicted them terribly.

Wow, I'm way behind on GB comics. I haven't read much since The Other Side and Displaced Aggression, neither of which I cared for. I feel particularly cheated by the interior art, especially when some of the cover work is so nice. But I could easily overlook that detail if the story is entertaining/compelling.

Ghostbusters and the X-Files? I don't know... Now, Ghostbusters and the Doctor... that I'd love to see!!

I also caught a shot where the Firehouse's sign was mounted to the corner of the building.

I'll be picking this issue up, but on the whole where I was initially impressed with that page on the New Jersey Turnpike, that feeling has quickly evaporated seeing some frankly schoolboy errors.

As we've seen with a few articles from the Ghostbusters property of late, it takes nothing to pop the DVD of the movie in and spend a little time actually watching it.

Wow. Is this guy trying to be the next Greg Land or something?

This "artist" reminds me of the guy who was banned from conventions for copying other peoples work and selling it off as his own. Maybe the comic book industry should implement something like that.
I wonder what else of his works are copied?

Most of this issue is taken straight from the pages of the 88MPH studio run.

The ghost is a copy of the blue ghost in issue one (minus the chin tenticles and with a second mouth added.) On page 10 you can see he traced the face in all three panels from the ghost on page 14 of 88's issue one.

On IDW page 11 : the guys gearing up in the second panel is a mirror image trace of a panel on page 15 of 88's issue #2

On IDW 12, as pointed out, Venkman is a trace of Venkman from the cover of 88 #1.

ON IDW 13: Ray and Winston's bodies are both copies of Ray from the bottom panel of page 5 in 88#1. You can see the outline of Winston's name tag on the wrong side because the image is flipped. In the bottom left panel, Egon and Peter are straight off of page 18 in 88's #1.

On IDW 14, Egon is a trace of Egon on page 14 of 88's #2, with a proton pack and PKE meter added.

On IDW 15, Venkman is another copy of the #1 cover Venkman, but with a new prop. In the bottom panel it looks like Venkmans hand, the bottom of the phone , and the pillar are from page 6 of 88's #1

IDW 16, Ray is a copy of Ray in 88#2 page 6. Winston is a copy of the Ray from the painted variant cover to 88#3. Next panel, Ray is a copy of Ray from page 5 88#2. in the next panel Winston is a trace of Peter in 88#2 page 16. I think Winston in the previous panel is also just a mirror image of that body, with Venkman's hand and thrower from the cover of 88#1 (this guys really likes that cover Venkman)

IDW 17, the ghost is straight off of 88 #1 page 14. Ray and Winston at the bottom of the page are taken from Venkman and Ray on the cover of 88#2

IDW page 19, Venkman kicking the trap is really Ray kicking the trap from 88#1 page 18. The bottom panel of the guys standing next to Ecto is from 88#1 page 4.

I'm sure there is more, but I think I made the point and already wasted too much of my day looking this up! It's one thing to trace the Slimer and Stay Puft banks and use them as part of your composition. It's another to just take another artist's work line for line. I really enjoy the IDW Ghostbusters ongoing, and their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles titles. But work like this really reflects poorly on both the IDW brand and the franchises they represent.

As an illustrator myself, I really hate when I hear another "artist" is tracing someone else's work. If we could assemble some side by side images of some of the offending art, it'd be great. I think that sort of information (and the dissatisfaction that it happened) should be forwarded to IDW and anyone else involved...

Because as it stands, traced art cheats the original artist, it cheats everyone who buys the book, and even ends up hurting IDW.

Wow! Nice work, Rutherford! I didn't have my copy of the 88MPH comic on hand, but I found a digital copy of Conspiracy and the amount of recycled art is incredible. I was stunned to see the artist not only copy more screencaps from the movie, but reusing his own lines of the Lone Gunmen (of course traced from promo photos of the cast) over and over and over. (that's a link)

I'm sure the story looked alright on paper, but the artist didn't do it any favors. So much of the action was unclear.

How did this make print, haha?
The ghost is some weird combo of the subway ghost and the ghost they busted at the beginning of Legion #2. Several panels are traced straight from that too. It's also funny that this person relied so heavily on tracing that if, for example, the handle of a thrower isn't visible in the image he traced from (you know, because it's being held), whenever he reused that image in a shot where the handle should be visible, there just is no handle. Also: look carefully. Notice that the PKE is ALWAYS drawn from the same angle, even if that means it looks like it's being held sideways. This dude found one shot of it and milked it.

As was mentioned, whatever wasn't lifted from Legion was traced from a photo, even if the perspective was off or the reference shot was too big. Like the traps on the work bench. Also, why is there an action figure of Ray in there, haha?

The icing on the cake is that this dude also traced other comic art too. I don't know if any other comic fans noticed, but Janine's face is CLEARLY a Frank Cho drawing. It's re-used until the angle is so drastic that he's forced to improvise (ie DRAW) and then it doesn't even match up.

It's disappointing. I understand it's a stressful job, deadlines are crazy, etc. But I know I for one am chomping at the bit to get I to comic art and illustration, and it would be a DREAM to work on a GB comic. So to see guys come in and trace their way to a paycheck really is disheartening.

Didnt Nick Simmons, son of Gene Simmons, get accused of this a few years back and claim he was paying "homage?"

Have you identified which one of Cho's?

He was, and it caused a major ruckus as I recall.

Ah yes, "Incarnate". My brother Ogre, our friend Vash, and I are Bleach fans, so we got a lot of laughs out of that one.

On the one hand, you'd think he'd be afraid of getting caught. On the other hand, as I joked about a few posts back, Marvel artist Greg Land traces stuff all the time--often, notoriously, from porn--and is considered one of Marvel's star artists. Maybe Simmons--and Navarro--liked their odds?

I think I've identified one of the Traps Salvador traced:
