Effective Immediately, posting in any of the General Discussion (Off-Topic) forums will not increase your post count.

We would like to encourage more posting in the Off-Topic section of the site to help build a better community. Please feel free to share things that you enjoy or find on the internet that is interesting... but keep in mind the rules still apply.

What does increasing our post count have to do with anything?

Yea, I thought e-dick was the main culprit...but didn't we fix that by making everyone "Ghosthead" ?

It will detract kids and idiots who think that your worth as a human is based on how many posts you write on http://www.GBfans.com And keep in mind, if you are a member of ghostbusters fans, then you are legally bound to yourself, or . . . something. Who ya gonna call? GORSHBURSHTURZZZ!

Question: How do you find the rules page without being given a direct link to it? How do you find it purely through browsing the website?

Personally, I don't get the point of not counting those posts, but I don't get the point of wanting to be post king either.

You have to agree to it when you sign up. . .

Yes, but no one reads that.
It would probably be good to have an easy way to find them later on. Up there where it says Chat, FAQ, Search, etc; should also be listed "Rules". Right there in plain sight, or at least included somewhere in the FAQ.

You do need to have 50 posts to be able to post in the "For Sale" forum. Other than that, not much.

But I have over 500 posts! SUCK IT MONKEYS!

Note: The majority of my counted posts were likely in the General Discussion Forum, and would not count if posted today, and are therefore irrelevant.

I thought it said it at the bottom of the page. But it doesn't anymore.

You could find it if you were looking though.

Another good point is that the For Sale forum requires at least 50 posts to be a seller. That was the main reason for doing this.. to stop people from just replying to a bunch of off topic posts and raising their count.

But where and how? I've looked before and found the search a little troublesome. I understand if it is hard to add a link into the forums top menu, but if we have to jump through hoops to find the rules "just because" then I think that's a bit odd.

If you aren't going to take the time to read it when you sign up, then am I to believe you will take the time later?

People really need to learn to not agree to things they have not read, not just here but in general. I'm pretty sure we can a link down at the bottom of the page, or in every forum - but someone's going to say it is not conspicuous. We can do that sure, but I don't know how much it is going to help.

Let me ask you this and I'm being honest, is there a point of us doing it?

Post count will now show how many contributing posts to the community you have, from what I can tell. So if you have 250 posts, 250 posts are in the sections about props, news, etc...Instead of 5 Posts in like, "Collectibles" and 245 in General Discussion.

Not to mention there are some people out there that try to use post count as a type of 'veteran status'.

"I have [x] amount of posts, that means I'm better then you and you're wrong!"

I do not understand this. Are you actually arguing against making the rules open and easily available for anyone who would like to look them over? It does not matter if they skipped them over while signing up. The point is clear.

I think you like to stir the pot. Your point is not clear. I'm asking you about it.

I don't post to read what I'm thinking. If I asked a question, it's an honest question.

Really, this seems like a silly debate. It's an internet forum, hardly anyone reads that stuff. It's just the norm, regardless if it pisses you off or not.

I regularly visit maybe a dozen forums, each one has a different set of rules, and maybe it is easy for Mr. Lawyer to remember all of those rules for all of those forums, but for regular folk like myself I like to check back in and make sure I am in bounds. There is literally no good reason to make people jump through hoops to try to find the rules. It appears that even AJ didn't realize the rules had disappeared from the forum, so at some point someone thought it was a good idea to make them open, why is it no longer a good idea now?

I just want to know if people are going to read them.

If you read what I had said, I even made it clear that we can put the rules back in place at the bottom of the forum.

I JUST WANT TO KNOW IF PEOPLE ARE GOING TO READ THEM.

I didn't realize that requesting the general forum rules be openly posted would be stirring the pot. I'd have thought that a lawyer-in-training would have an appreciation for having the rules easy to find.

I know I have gone looking for them on many occasions and not found them, and I have brought this up to you before. I believe I stopped my search when you direct linked me just like AJ did above. I am not trying to stir the pot; this just seems like common sense to me. People bothering to read them is really here nor there, that is their choice and has nothing to do with me and it should have nothing to do with the administrations willingness to remove the jumping and the hoops to find them.

Yes it is here, and now.

I want people to read the rules. I want to make them available. I am trying to figure out better methods of getting them to people. A sticky in every forum? A link on the bottom of the page? Having to re-agree to them every six months?

Quote:

Is you insinuating that I want to keep the rules hidden, which is a viewpoint contained nowhere in my posts. That's stirring the pot. And I took it as an insult. I also took all your condescending "lawyer" remarks as an insult.

You want to portray me as someone who wants the rules to be hidden, go ahead and try. That serves no purpose. I'm trying to find the best way to make sure they are conspicuous and you are being insulting.

Well if that is the case then I just misunderstood your point and I apologize. Also, I wasn't trying to be insulting. It is a little tongue-in-cheek but wasn't meant to be mean. Just asking questions as well. Stick them at the top next to the FAQ link and let's call it a day.

Serious. Well said.

I've often noticed that there seem to be:

1) Those who do a lot and don't post much
2) Those who post a lot and don't do much

For that reason I'm not too fond of putting a cap on how much you post before you sell, but my point is more to agree that those with a high post count are most certainly not better. ....just more bored and more likely to spend all day on the internet instead of getting a life.

FYI, I disagree with the policy ( but abide by it - I have no choice ) because I had to make several frivolous posts on RPF just to meet a minimum post count before I was allowed to sell copies of the Nite Owl suit. This policy ignores that I spent 6 months of barely posting and just coming home and doing SOLID WORK on that f***ing suit mold. Meanwhile the daily posters who ( for the most part ) weren't building anything could sell anything they wanted. ....even though they hadn't built anything in the last 6 months.

Imagine a guy like DavidYR1 being denied the ability to post and sell just because he has a life and isn't here posting every day.

Just my 2-cents, not bucking management. I'll abide by pretty much whatever you guys are doing.

On a forum I help admin we have gotten rid of anything that relys on post count (such as having to have 50 posts to post in For Sale section) because we've found that no matter what people will find ways around the rules. While they now can't post in off-topic threads they can post 50 "that looks cool" replies in people's pack threads.

I also agree that a full listing of forum rules should always be available to members whether it be stickied at the top or on it's own page. If you can't show them where they originally read the rules without them signing up for another account to see it, then it's hard to enforce the rules.

Your forum, your rules, so I will abide by them.

Every site I have ever been on that has more than 1000 users has had it setup where the Off Topic area has not counted towards the post count. Nearly every single one.

There is some way to see the rules from the Control Panel, butI can't find it right now.

So...after throwing chicken and Ron's discussion...are we going to have the rules listed?
