Its actually extremely easy.

I see you have done that now..

Edit: Quite interesting how much "save for web" changes the file size.

Yes. That is the proper way to compress a file for internet viewing in Photoshop.

yes, but save for web also diminishes the quality, and also the color scheme (only slightly for both, but these are things I deal with as a graphic designer, so Im always trying to get the best quality)

No it doesn't.

And on a 125 x 125 file who really cares.

A 50kb file looks EXACTLY the same as a 10kb file.

my avatar was 24kb - 14kb over the limit - so AJ deleted it...

I think 10kb is pretty low, 50kb would make more sense, as long as it isnt animated

Why don't you go ahead and post the avatar here in this thread for everyone to see.

We have been over this ad-nauseum.

You don't need an HD or HQ avatar. Here are THREE examples. Tell me if you can tell the difference.

Attachment:
original.png

Attachment:
256colors.png

Attachment:
32colors.png

Notice how small the last one is in size... This is an example.. I even included transparency since you had it as a PNG originally.

You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

the last one is grainy - the middle one isnt too bad. but I think supporting members should be able to have their avatars and sigs be larger in size then other members... anyway, i'll use the middle one - I tried sizing it down myself in photoshop but it left a choppy white outline around the art when i tried to save it as a png

The last two have no perceivable differences unless you stick your face to the screen and start looking at pixels.

Why should we have to sit through and let those people have 50kb avatars that load on every page? It makes absolutely no sense what-so-ever. At 125x125 no one should have an avatar larger than 10kb. Most people have avatars that are 4-8kb.. and they look JUST FINE.

My above example was a perfect way to show this.

I can see the grain on the last image but then again I have an HD monitor.
But its only noticeable really because I am looking and if it was just alone on a page as I scrolled it wouldn't catch my eye.

Just relax, its an avatar not your life's work in a museum of art.
How many more times shall we go through this, before avatars star getting taken away from certain members. Luckily Aj is nicer then me.

It should be obvious.

If it is bigger than everyone else's avatar.. ITS TOO BIG.
