After a few weeks of comparing the various trap plans I'm starting work on a scratchbuilt trap. All of the plans are a pain in the ass as most don't agree with eachother and none take material thickness into account. I eventually settled on JT001's modification of Venkman71's plans. I'm layering .06 styrene over foamcore for the canister.

Image
Image

I've got to pick up some putty for the edges, next step is the handle and battery box.

Image

I'll be putting lights and wheels on it but won't bother with opening doors. This is mainly intended as a belt hanger. C&C welcome.

Ok, got the handle attached:

I've got to putty it to smooth out the wood grain then I can get to work on the battery box.

Wow, that's coming together fast! Looks great, and also looks like it'll end up being pretty lightweight too. Might have to cop your design someday.

looks good. I see you put putty on the screws in the handle... I usually see screws exposed on builds but it looks good

I thought the handle was secured with a socket screw? I know I'm asking to be proven wrong here ;)

That looks to be correct:

Image

Though the GB2 stunt traps didn't have any visible screw:

Image

This will be a bit of a bastardized trap in that it will have mainly GB2 parts and I'm undecided on the side rod color.

Got the parts for the base made:

Image

These are supposed to be 1/4" thick so I sandwiched 1/8" balsa between .06" styrene. Cutting the wheel holes is a bit of a pain but a cutting disk on my dremel got it done. I've got the wood axels screwed in and the two parts glued together and drying. Next up will be to putty the edges a bit and work on the blocks next to the forward indicator

I believe that is thought to be not a screw, but a thumb-lever for the catch that secures the cartridge in the outer case, located at the base of the handle.

A lot of progress. The ears are done and attached to the forward indicator. It took a while to make a system for the hex head screws to screw in after paint.

Image

I've started working on the aluminum detail plates. Unfortunately I can't find 1/16" aluminum so I'm using 1/32". I did manage to get some 1/8" though and cut out parts for a v-hook.

Image

Finally I prototyped the light circuit. I've got the 7+1 yellow lights for the forward indicator static and the fast-blinking light for the red cap.

Image

The trap is primed and now I'm in the crazy order stage where things have to be painted before they can be attached and/or installed. WIth any luck I should have it done by next weekend.

I was looking at this and was thinking, couldn't you fill them with plaster? Would give your hex screws something to bite into. Amazing looking trap so far, It's making me want to use the same materials when I build mine.

Update time! The circuit is built and tested. I need longer leads on the blinking light but otherwise works fine.

Image

Got the forward indicator built minus the various screws:

Image

Here's where I'm at now and a test fit of an aluminum panel:

Image
Image

I need to let the clear coat dry a bit more then I can permanently install the electronics and button up the battery box. I ordered some 1/16 aluminum for the knob plates so I'm waiting for that to show up. Next will probably be the trap doors.

Update: being snowed in gives you a lot of time to get work done on projects.

The electronics are installed and some of the hardware has been added.

Image
Image
Image

The doors are built and primed and I've started working on the aluminum plates for the side details.

Image

It's coming down to the end of it. I still need to figure out what I'm doing to do for the labels. Attaching knobs to metal is a pain in the ass.

Ask and ye shall receive!

I've got the wheels attached, the doors built and one side of detail bits attached:

Image
Image
Image
Image

Once the detail bits for the other side are complete I can attach the metal plates. The doors are painted up, just waiting for a clear coat. Still need to make the front aluminum plate, attach the knobs and work some more on the V-hook. I have some leather coming soon so I can make a holster and I picked up both white and clear label paper today.

Snow days are great for getting stuff done. I still need to add the lettering next to knobs on the front and I'm not totally happy with the labels. My printer refused to print a vibrant red for some reason. I started out making a styrene and foamcore trap thinking it'd be relatively lightweight but with all the aluminum on this thing it's gotten quite heavy.

This build's not entirely done, I'm working on a holster and have plans for a custom RGB style pedal for the other end of the cable.

Nice work Jack. I like the rod color choice. ^^

I kinda wanted to do red but since the rest of the details are GB2, i didn't have any red spraypaint and I had most of a can of yellow left over from painting the doors I was a lazy bastard and just went with it. It's all good. :whatever:

Those rods are the same paint as the doors? They look brighter to me. Could just be the lighting in the pic.

But fantastic trap! Deserves one of these:
