Hey there I am new to all of this but have been reading many build threads. I was inspired to do this by my 3 year old's new found love for RGB and the PINKGHOSTBUSTER's RGB packs. Hopefully mine can turn out half as nice as theirs. Started work yesterday (saturday 2/6/11) and I think I got a good start. I got the Ion Arm/Power Cell, Booster Tube mount, and Generator roughed out. I am making this out of MDF with the hopes to taking a mold of it and make a shell. I am trying to keep the weight down since my son is only 3. Ion Arm/Power Cell Booster Tube Mount Generator The top of the pack so far Any questions or comments are greatly encouraged. I plan to put lights in the power cell, cyclotron, and wand. Tried to post pics, couldn't get them to work. If you can help please do. For now please check out pics on my photobucket page: http://s1191.photobucket.com/albums/z48 ... on%20Pack/

I've toyed with this idea for my Son. Are you working from plans, or winging it by looking at pictures?

I have a rough set of measurements I found online and I just sized them down, and I am making some of it up as I go.If it turns out great and people like it I may make shells or make the plans available to everyone.

Ok. I did a bunch of work today, due to the fact that I got laid off from work... Oh well, more time to work on the project. I remade the Ion Arm/Power Cell. I think this one is proportioned much better than the first one: I also made the cyclotron spacer: I also made all of my cyclotron rings: A shot of the roughed out pack. I have much sanding and shaping to do still: Hopefully the pictures worked but if not you can check out the progress at my photobucket page: http://s1191.photobucket.com/albums/z48 ... on%20Pack/Again any questions, comments, or critiques are encouraged.

You're doing it wrong? The pictures I mean. But its looking nice! Better then I could do me thinks... Ima tackle my own soon. To help you out with the images. On Photobucket it is easy, just click the IMG Code and it will copy it for you, that just past it in here. Easy, yep yep. have to tabs open too, saves going back and forth. Yuh.

Thanks for the nice comment Nicholszz.
As far as the pictures go, here is the process I have been using. I am using a Mac so maybe thats my issue? I have the gbfans tab and my photobucket tab open, i copy the photos address and paste it in to my post, then I highlight it and click the Img button in the Message Body box. If that is the wrong process, some one please help me out.
This is my first build so I really want and need comments, critiques, and questions. ]

Sounds right? Not sure about Macs though. I think its looking great, I can tell its an RGB pack. Havn't done much building myself though, so I can't give you good constructive criticism. Keep her going none the less.

Well I don't have any updated pics yet, but....
I began making the thrower for the pack. I am using the DIC sketches from the show and making common measurements off of the pack to get my sizes. I am happy so far. I have the gun box made but I wasn't really thinking and sealed it up. Does any one out there in GBFansland want to tell me the secret to casting a hollow gun box? This project is for my son and I need everything to be as light as possible.
On a very happy note I picked up 3 ALICE frames from a surplus store here in San Diego for a total for $30. No straps but now i have a frame for the son, me, and my friend who also wants a pack. I also bought 2 from eBay to have on hand just incase.
Pics tomorrow...

Ok I promised some pics today. I gave some wood filler a try. That stuff is a pain in the butt! Hopefully after using it some more I will be better with it. Enjoy the pics and please let me know what you think. Some wood filler shots...ooohhh exciting Some shots of the gun box. I am winging it on this one. Using what look like common measurements vs the pack. Lastly a shot of the entire WIP pack with the gun box laying next to it. If the picture didn't work like they never seem to, you can check them out here: http://s1191.photobucket.com/albums/z48 ... on%20Pack/

this thread needs its images.
try right clicking the pic and viewing it as an image and using that url, or try a different photo uploading site. like image shack

D_rock wrote: 3/4 may be a bit big for a 3 year old. I made a 3/4 size pack for my 10yr old this past halloween out of foam and it weighed less than 5 pounds. If you knocked the scale down to 50% you could get the weight around 2 pounds or less depending if you make a scaled frame etc. My build here viewtopic.php?f=2&t=22403KC's build that inspired me viewtopic.php?f=2&t=21827I did think about 50% but I wanted him to be able to use it past Halloween. It is a tad big right now so he will have some room to grow into it. As for the frame I have an ALICE frame that I plan to modify.

I am using a MAC, no idea if that matters. If you right click on the picture box you can open the pic so the link is correct. Or maybe since I am a noobie pics aren't active for me? Who knows.... Its frustrating though.

I made quite a bit of progress today. Sanded down all of my wood putty, patched a couple more areas, sanded again, laid on a thick coat of primer, and since I was a little impatient I primed and painted my 2 tubes (yellow and red). Primed pack... By joeluna33 at 2011-02-17 By joeluna33 at 2011-02-17 By joeluna33 at 2011-02-17 By joeluna33 at 2011-02-17 By joeluna33 at 2011-02-17 By joeluna33 at 2011-02-17 PVC Tubes... By joeluna33 at 2011-02-17 Tomorrows plan, sand high spots, fill low spots, sand filler, reprimer, sand smooth, hopefully get some color on the pack. Any one have any input?

Well i got a bit done today. Not everything I hoped but enough. I sanded down the primer I sprayed yesterday, found and patched some low spots, and reprimered. There was rain moving in so I didn't want to take the change of painting it. I also figured out what to use for the grey....wiring loom?.....that runs around the yellow tube. I also got the cone mounted inside the red tube and primed the cone part. Lastly I made and glued in 2 pucks for the yellow tube's ends. sanded them flat and after all the glue dries I will fill any gaps there, prime, and paint.
Its getting close. I am excited to begin the molding process. Has anyone reading this thread ever made a pack mold before? If so any tips you can give a first timer?
If you like what you see in the pictures above. I am planning to make these available for purchase. Either a complete pack or just a shell. They are about 19" in over all length which is perfect for a kid, lady, or smaller man. Either post here or send me a PM and we can discuss it more.

Well it rained again here in San Diego, BUT I got some work done early before it got cold and the rain came. Enjoy, 1st coat of paint on the buck By joeluna33 at 2011-02-19 By joeluna33 at 2011-02-19 By joeluna33 at 2011-02-19 After the paint dried enough to touch I got a shot of all the do-dads laying on it. By joeluna33 at 2011-02-19 I also went and bought the silicone to make the mold today. I am getting excited. This is going quite a bit faster than I thought it would. I have an A.L.I.C.E frame that I am going to modify to kids size.

Update for tuesday afternoon. I began my adventure into making a silicone mold of my pack. I have never done anything this size before and its kind of scary. Before this the only prop I have ever made was a Princess Leia Ceremonial necklace from Ep4 for my wife's costume. I am using this Smooth-On product... By joeluna33 at 2011-02-22 This is the first coat. I plan on applying 3 coats. Hopefully thats all I need as this stuff is kind of expensive and no one in San Diego that I could find sells it in bulk. By joeluna33 at 2011-02-22 By joeluna33 at 2011-02-22

They are on Fig St in Little Italy. They only carry it in 2lbs kits, 1lb per part. The guy at the counter said that if you order it from their website that they have it in larger sizes. I will defiantly be doing that next time as it is $26 per 2lb kit.
