nice joe ;) so on to the molding for this bad boy. i went to a few framing shops and asked "hey i need some of that tacky gold molding/ very over the top stuff" and the answer from every store was "sure we can get that done.. its going to be around 500$+" no freaking way was i going to pay that kinda doe on this. so for a while i shopped around trying to find a cheap alternative and came up empty handed for months.

i ended up taking the long route and trying to replicate this

Image

i bought this molding from my local home depot
Image

gave it two coats of some gold paint
Image
went over it with some colonial red spray paint
Image
then went back with gold
Image
Image
then went over everywhere with some copper to tone everything down
Image
Image
practicing my black sprits
Image
not bad for a first attempt
Image
framing things out
Image
clamping this bad boy together
Image

more photos soon!

That came out very close! I would have never thought of adding the red.

Maybe also take a scouring pad lightly to the black spots to knock them back a bit, and help blend them in?

I'm always surprised how much they charge for things like this when they are actually pretty easy to replicate if you are creative.

So lets dress up that box!

stain first! (this will also be the stain i will use for when i redo the couch)
Image

Chris aka Noslit came threw with this awesome switch he picked up for me at a surplus store. thanks chris!
Image

even thou the switch is about 50 years old it still looked to new lol. lets add some age
Image

there thats better
Image

here is the knob i chose to open the box
Image

ok both installed!
Image

i said i was gonna post a picture later on those pegs. here it is.
Image

ok i am not gonna take credit for this one. i came at halt when i couldnt figure out what material to use to cover the speakers. izzy came to the rescue and gave me the sweet idea to use the metal stuff you would use to cover a heater
Image

doing some dry fitting.....sweeeeeet
Image
looking good
Image
i picked up these corner guards at my local hardware store. i painted them the same style as the other stuff
Image
even painted the screws!
Image
man this is turning out nice.
Image
Image
i also painted the sensor
Image
the guts
Image
all done
Image
Image
this thing came together so smoothly. Of course with the help of my trusty sidekick Elias who is back from training
Image

so maybe tomorrow we have a sound check?

let me know what you guys think so far

Oh no! Don't tell me you let Matt touch it...

He breaks everything given to him, even if it isn't possible to break.

If this is what I think it is, I'm impressed with how you put it together. And the look is pretty cool too. :-)

Ok so i guess with the following videos and pictures the cat is out of the bag. before i started the room over a year ago i wanted to have a vigo painting. My normal room is not the biggest of rooms and i didnt want to put something of that size in there. and it wouldnt really go with the rest of the room. then came the Ecto Cave. I kept thinking of ways on how i can put it in the room, then i came up with the idea of having him as a shade. the benefit of that is well i can have vigo when i want him and when i dont i can just roll him up. The person who supplied with the shade wishes to remain name less, but without this person this would not happen done. So i thank you. Besides it being a shade i wanted to really go above and beyond and do another first, which is making a vigo painting that talks. I had the help of Rob with that one, thank you Rob!. now on to the sound test!

at last you are alive vigo! well sorta

Image

one cool little side note... you can see him from outside at night!
Image

now before you guys get all mad about me cutting a hole in this thing. i really tried every, yes everything.
Image

one SUPER AWESOME BONUS! is that during the day when the sun is out look what happens!

Image

i was shocked when i saw this in the morning. it is to cool
Image

i hope you guys all like what you see. i will have some more pictures tomorrow with the frame up!

let me know what you think!!!!!!!!!!

I love the shade idea. Very clever.

How many of his sayings were you able to fit on that sound chip?

VERY cool addition! If you wanted to light it at night, odds are you could easily add a few of those smaller flourescent lights behind him as well.

Very awesome XxEctoxX! Its coming together great, my question is is the frame gonna come past the wall to cover the light gap between, or be flush with the wall?

@noslllTlook at his eyes he's looking at everyones balls! :)

Carpeteria- funny thing is I will be adding lights to his eyes later on.

Garee- I wouldnt want him lit up at night cause I have to have the lights on in my room to play xbox

Ectoman_913- yes I will be overlapping the frame of the window to cover the light.

Fernando great job man, keep doing what you are doing. You are one talented mofo.

You don't have to add advice in every thread, just look and enjoy.

In all seriousness, I am in awe, I hope we get to see it when we come to NYCC

YOU BASTARD. Ok fine, but I want a plaque with my name etched on it below the window. It's only fair.

You could've avoided cutting a hole in the shade by having the sensor inside the front of the box (instead of on top) and just not roll the shade all the way down.. No?
