Over the past two weeks, the official Ghostbusters Facebook page and Twitter accounts have been alive with hints and teaser comments about the re-release of Ghostbusters into theaters this October. No details had been given until this past Thursday when Sony issued an official press release with details.

"Ghostbusters will show in approximately 500 theatres across the US on October 13th, 20th, and 27th, one showtime each day, in 2K digital with 5.1 surround sound. Please check local listings for showtimes. Ghostbusters will also be showing in select theatres in Canada and in various international markets."

So it sounds like there will be single showings of Ghostbusters in theaters on select Thursdays in October! Check with your local theater for details.

This is good news of the highest order. But....1 show per day? What about those of us who want to see it back-to-back?!

Is there any sign of the UK dates? I can only find US dates and I need to know if the GB's are coming to the UK!!

This is crap. I am here in Afghanistan and now they decide to show the movie in theatre's again. I am not really happy about that. So I am going to get have to just watch it on my computer and be content with that. Being in the military is starting to suck to me now.

I want to go but I just hope it will be showing at a movie theater near me, does anyone know a good site to check for that? Fandango doesn't have info out that far.

Will tickets cost outrageous 2011 prices, or something far cheaper? 1984 ticket prices would be nice :-)

Even though it's Ghostbusters, I don't go to the theater to see NEW movies (except for when a relative treats me on my birthday or when I get free tickets), so it's highly unlikely I'd go to see a movie that I already currently own THREE copies of (two 1999 DVDs and one Blu-ray). Now if there's some "added value" to these showings, then I'd consider it.

According to the press release, the "print" shown will be a 2K digital presentation with 5.1 surround sound. That sounds to me like it's pretty much the same thing I have on my Blu-ray copy. Why would I want to pay to see the same thing I already own on Blu-ray, especially since I don't think the Blu-ray really looks the way that the film *should* look (the brightness was turned up WAY too high).

The only way I would pay to see Ghostbusters in a theater is if an actual film print was shown. That's the only way in which I have yet to experience the film, as I'm sure many others have yet to see it that way, too. To cart out a "perfect digital presentation" for a theatrical release does the film an injustice, even if it may be the most practical and cheapest way to do it.

Of course, that's assuming that it would be shown at a theater near me. Otherwise, this is all moot.

Sorry, but I'm just not excited about this at all.

By the way, doesn't it kinda defeat the purpose of the special theatrical showing by stating at the end of the press release that "Ghostbusters is available on Blu-ray and DVD"? It's like saying, "Why go see it in the theater next month when you can OWN a digital presentation for home viewing right now".

I don't know if theaters in NY are the same as theaters in MN... but here if it is playing Mon - Thurs, the ticket price is just regular mantinee prices. ($5-$6).

I already talked to about a dozen of my friends and we're all doing a Movie Night for it.
Even though we've all seen the movie waaaaaaay too many times, it'll be nice to see it on the Big Screen again.

Typically. Movie theaters don't have their schedules up 3-4 weeks in advance.

I just have a feeling that Sacramento will be skipped.

I never saw Ghostbusters when it came out in theaters. I was too young to see it at the time, I think I was about six when it came out in '84. I've seen it on TV, VHS, and DVD since then. Seeing it in theaters puts it in a different light. I fully intend to see it, but I'm worried that the theaters near where I live will get skipped. I had the same reaction when Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope came back to theaters as part of the Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition theatrical re-release.

Around here it ranges from $12.50 - $20 per ticket for a special event like this, even on a weeknight.

No word yet from the local theatre chains on showtimes. Anyone know if there is nationwide listing of theaters set to receive it?

Spending every summer of my life in Ocean City, I can honestly say I've NEVER seen a movie cost $20... not even $12.50.

Ocean City is the usual $8 per show or whatever any time I go. Definitely not even close to those prices. What theatre do you go to?

Only IMAX movies in 3D cost $15-$17 here. (And they are usually worth it).

$18 for 2D imax at the tropicana. (plus ticketmaster fees because they sellout consistantly)
$20 for single showing special events at the Regal Cinemas by the Hamilton Mall. (only theatre in town with good DTS surround sound)
$12.50 for normal movies weeknights and weekends at the Regal

It always amazes me that we can travel to Philadelphia, or even NYC and see a movie for less than we can in the middle of the pine barrens.

My first job was at the Strand 5 theatre in Ocean City, sure the ticket is only $8, but you have to pay $20 or constantly feed a meter to park anywhere close during the summer.

Back on topic though, last time we saw the film in the local theatre's $5 retro night, we noticed the true genius to the comedic timing. For home viewing you might never notice, but the pauses for large audience laughter are just perfect. Definately an experience to have at least once.

If anyone from the middle of nowhere Kansas is wondering, the Wichita Warren Theatre (13th street location only) is showing it at 7 p.m., Oct. 17th, 20th & 27th. And it's probably standard evening price ($10 per person).

So far I have found no showings in the DFW area. I plan to compile a list of all the major local theaters in the area and start calling them one by one until I find a showing.

We're having trouble here in the Bay Area as well..Regal in Dublin Ca. said they want it but don't know if it's going to happen..I've been calling all the theaters and they all either so no, we had no idea it was coming back out, or we don't know :I
Wonder why Sony is being so coy about the theaters..from my limited experience in the theater industry they should have the theaters nailed down by now.

I'm beginning to believe we will most likely find it in independent theaters rather than major corporate ones like AMC or Cinemark. Correct me on this if I'm wrong, but the showings that have already been established in Kentucky and elsewhere sound like they are coming from independent theaters.

I have a friend that works in a movie theater and he got a press kit about it and told me 2 locations in Miami that he knows of but no date or time for them. now I gotta contact both of them to see if they would love to have the Miami Ghostbusters make an appearance

My bro and I are wanting to bring by brother-in-law to see it...he's 34 and has never seen "Ghostbusters".
If not, I won't be too upset. We can always pop in the bluray and watch it on a hdtv.

, it's not the same exprience. As far as it being a digital presentation- I'd prefer that! The last time I saw Ghostbusters in the theater (about 2 years ago) they used an actual print of the film the sound dropped, some parts the print was scratched, and you defintely could tell it had broken a few times.
I'm far from being an expert on Movie theaters but I doubt Sony is remastering and striking any new flim prints for theatrical release anymore as the film industry is actually moving away from the old projectors and installing the digital ones. I most certianly could be wrong though!
Then there is the audience factor, a theater full of fans watching the movie, qouting lines, cheering and booing (like when peck appears) adds to the whole expreince. I gotta say the audience I saw it with were really into the movie.
But everyone is entitled to thier opinons and reasons, I'm not saying your points are not valid, they are, I just would like throw some other considerations about the rerelease out there as well. also be thankful they did not do a cheap transfer to 3-D!
