Fantastic Job!! I have to say that I am pretty impressed. Definitely interested in obtaining one of these puppies. Will this also work with an HT-220?? I have my doubts that it would, but I have to ask either way. While I know what my Mt-500 looks like inside, i've never cracked open the HT-220 to compare.
At a minimum, a connection to a power switch, the speaker and the talk button would be needed. If the talk button is a Normally Open (NO) type switch this will work fine. If not, it should not be too much work to customize the microcontroller's code to invert the talk button connections - the tougher part would be testing it out and making sure it would work, since I don't have anything but MT-500s.

Wow. Great job man! This is better and more customized than I expected! It all flows so seamlessly. Seriously - well done! Only thing I thought was missing was more radio squelch. I think it'd be nice to have the option of having squelch before each quote, but I have no idea how easy that would be for you to add, and it sounds like a lot of other people wouldn't want it anyway. Is that maybe an option that could be added upon request?
After _not_ hearing it for a few days, the extra squelch noise sounds good again... I will probably offer two versions: Regular and Extra Squelch, so you can order a module the way you prefer.

its awesome im in for one they do come with installation instructions dont they?
No instructions yet, but some dissasembly (gut portions of the radio), some assembly (glue in the battery holder, sand a slot inside to let the ribbon cable through) and some soldering (6 wires minimum: 2 for power, 2 for talk button and 2 for speaker, and then another 4 optionally for sound selection from a radio switch instead of the board's jumpers).
I do have several MT-500s available that I can mod and offer for sale if anyone prefers not to do any mods on their own radios.
The kits should be available in a couple of weeks at most - I have all of the parts and am currently in the middle of building, programming and testing them.

This sounds incredible...I have a gutten MT500 but the insides are pretty torn up from whoever gutted it... I would like to see a picture of the wiring up close before I could tell if this is something I could easily do myself... or horribly screw up myself. Either way it looks friggin amazing and I would not see why anyone would want to walk around with an MT500 without this inside of it

Between 6 and 10 wires to connect.
6 Wires from the ribbon cable to the insides of the MT-500 really need to be connected: Black and White - to the power switch, direct solder (upper left hand corner) Gray And Violet - to the speaker, solder to wires so front cover can still be easily disconnected (upper right) Blue and Green - to the talk switch, solder to wire and to PCBoard, or in some models to a switch mounted on the PCB.
4 more wires from the ribbon cable to the insides of the MT-500 allow external sound selection. If not connected, the jumpers on the sound board can still be used to select which groups of sounds will be used. Yellow, Orange and Red - to rotating switch individual selects 1, 2 and 3, direct solder to outside tabs Brown - to rotating switch common connection, direct soder to center tab
I will add some videos showing a teardown of one of the radios, as soon as they finish uploading
Even closer looks:
Talk Switch:
Power and Group Selection:

What's the international shipping cost?
I have had good luck with the USPS First Class International mail for light packages, so the sound module should not be too expensive to ship. It may only cost about $3-$4 over shipping within the USA. An MT-500 or Charger/Stand is fairly heavy, so the international shipping rates are fairly high.
The transit time is usually stated as "Varies by destination", so it is tough to tell how long it will really take. If you want it faster, it gets expensive!
When they are available for sale, just send me a PM with your address and I will give you an estimated shipping cost.

Those were exactly the photos I needed to see! I will now open mine up again to see if the speaker and such are still intact and capable of holding solder.
kudos for the pictures and for the work on the chip.. this will be one of the better props in the end of it all....simply amazing.

Here is a PDF file detailing the MT500 disassembly and sound module installation instructions that has many additional photographs of the conversion process: https://www.onlinefilefolder.com/2sMx4bSZs5V7k5

The MT-500 Sound Modules are now ready for sale!
Purchasing info is now on the first page. Just send me a PM if you want any of this fun stuff!
I also have a nice selection of MT-500 Radios that I will mod, and also several Desk Chargers that make great display stands (my radio no longer gets knocked over!)
