In addition to supporting the unit the feet keep the back pipes and gears clear of resting directly on a countertop.
Note the scrollwork.

I wasn't so sure about that thing on top until I watched the video, but seeing it in motion I think it works well.

That little black switch on top is the only problem I have with it, otherwise, it's a work of art.

Kinda hard to find a ready made switch that looks accurate to the era so if a bit of slack could be cut for me I'd appreciate it. lol

You could always attach something to the top of the switch, like the switch on the movie PKE?

I just wonder if you could glue something on top of that switch to give it an antique look. The rest of it is the bomb! Trust me, I'm not criticizing your pke, mine has a flower pattern on it.

A typewriter key, perhapse? With the word/letter replaced with "On"?

That's great, very era/theme appropriate!

As for the switch, try and find a really small knife switch or a chunky toggle that you can age appropriately. Or, add a plate connected to the switch with On and an arrow on it with the proper aging.

I think it looks great - the only thing I would change is the modern switch - a brass one would really finish it off nicely.

Or just a basic toggle switch would be better, anything but that modern plastic switch.

I love the "Evil Dead" level on the meter..I have to say after meeting the league of steam guys at wondercon I have a whole new respect for the amount of detail and craftsmanship that goes into the steam punk gear. Great job on the Spector detector!

I scratch built the casing. The dial graphics are taken from an old clock and the text from a font sample from that era.

To elaborate, dial graphics are taken from and image of an old clock face making it easier to add the text digitally.
