I picked this battery up from ebay, based on suggestions in threads here.
Image

I have a couple of questions:
I am currently using a R4DEVO light kit. The kit comes with a 9V adapter that plugs into the board. Does Radioshack or another place make an similar adapter that would work with the plug-in that's connected to the battery in the picture?

Here's the dumb question: Am I supposed to leave the blue wrapper on, or take it off? I have no idea lol.

Im using a similar battery for mine. I went to radio shack and picked up a Coaxial Power Jack size M. It fits mine but its a good idea to bring the battery in with you. The blue wrapper should be left on. Im using an R2DEVO kit as well unfortunately I made a similar post not that long ago and didn't receive any useful replies so Im just as lost at the moment.

Thank you.

So does the adapter just have a plug with a red and black wire that goes into the board? Like the 9V one?
Here's a pic of the same kind that came with the board:

No, this is a jack that the plug from the battery plugs into. You will have to wire the jack to the board. The 9v plug isn't used. I'll try to post a pic when I get to a pc.

I guess I am confused now.

I meant if there is a female part for the male part on the battery that would then go into the board. I know the 9V adapter isn't needed, I posted the link to the 9V adapter as an example of how it goes into the board with the black and red wires.

How do you wire the jack you posted to the board?

You would have to solder the wires to the back of the jack then run the wires to the power screw terminal on the board. The problem is I'm not sure which pole at the end of the jack is positive or negative. This is why I haven't wired mine up yet, I don't want to fry a $200 light kit.

is this the solution?

Thanks, guys! As an extra incentive to get it stickied, I'll add more info on the power jack. Essentially, using a 2.1mm female barrel plug mounted somewhere on the outside of the pack - I plan on putting mine either on the motherboard itself, or possibly hidden somewhere on the pack shell - you can recharge your battery using a smart charger connected via an adapter without ever having to take apart the proton pack.

For the record, the only connection between me and The Custom Saber Shop is that they're the place where I get the parts to build and repair my lightsabers. Recharge ports are something that I learned about while building said sabers, and thus TCSS is my source for them.

Does the plug have any markings on it indicating polarity? With those jacks, the center and the outside can be either + or -.

As for the jacks, they sell a number of different sizes. I don't know which one you need:

The jack I'm using doesn't have any markings to indicate which is positive or negative on it.

I don't see any markings on the jack that's attached to the battery.

Does the battery have either of these icons on it at all?
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... larity.png

As far as I know that will tell you how the connector should be wired up.

*Warning: Someone with proper 'electrical' knowledge may need to clarify this though.

No, it doesn't have any markings or icons. Thank you for the help though.

I think this purchase is going in the "I should have done more research before buying" column lol.

Hmm hopefully someone can chime in with a way to figure out the polarity of these batteries... I have two on the way. Just a thought but does the AC charge adaptor have either of those icons? I'm wondering if that would be the same (although the charger does use the other connector).

No markings on the one that goes into the charger either. They only have one document for support on the website, and its in Chinese.

The markings on the charger would be on the label on the wall wart.

If you have a multimeter you could check it that way. If you have an LED and a 500+ ohm resistor you could also test the polarity with that.

Got it! Found the answer in RVDEVO's for sale thread:

Ok just plugged in a higher quailty battery and everything works fine! As you were guys :)

Just a heads up, if you're using the overkill vent lights, you'll def need something stronger than 9v!

XenuPrime wrote:
I noticed in your V8 instructions you recommend a 12v battery from eBay. Can you reccomend a certain one? Also, looking at some on eBay I can't see how to connect it to the pack without cutting the wire. It looks like you would not be able to charge it after you cut that wire (I see the workaround part for the radio shack battery)

I used one like this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/12V-Portable-9800mAh-Li-ion-Super-Rechargeable-Battery-Pack-/400250609355?pt=US_Batteries&hash=item5d30cb9ecb#ht_4726wt_1163

And I cut the wires and it worked fine. It has the 2 sets of wires coming off of the battery (one female and one male) and I just cut the male one and the female one is still available for charging. Also the one I linked is 9800mAh and I can tell you it was gone quite some time without a charge, a few parties and 2 conventions (although mine is just powering the lights, I know some people combine it with a sound kit or an amp). And the plus side is the battery itself has an on/off switch so you don't need to install one.

I cut the male plug off. Lo and behold: red and black wires :)

How long did it take you to charge your battery? My two arrived and have had them plugged in for 5 hours so far. They came with two chargers with both a red and a green light, do you know if one of the lights goes off when its fully charged?

I let mine charge around 14 hours. The green light goes off when it's fully charged.

Cheers! One more dumb question though... Does the switch on the battery have to be switched to on?

Yes, the battery needs to be switched on to power the pack lights. The red light ON the battery will be lit when it's powered on.

My battery doesn't have an on/off switch. It took around 4 hours to charge - the red LED on the charger turned green when it was done.

Maybe you can provide me with some help. I received my battery and exposed the red and black wires, just as you did. How exactly are your battery wires connected to the rest of your pack? I have a crix complete kit with a canakit amp (the battery wiring has the amp, pack lights, and wand lights connected directly to it) and i am having major issues with my lights not functioning properly when the battery is switched on. Did you have any similar problems?

I don't have the kit or battery anymore, sorry. It was hooked up in that picture where the 9v connector is plugged in. You might want to start a topic for your issues along with what troubleshooting you have done. There are quite a few wiring wizards on the site.
