chaobell's Proton Pack

And here we have a new piece of experimental equipment: the DHMO Pack Mark I. DHMO, in case you're wondering, stands for "dihydrogen monoxide."

Think about that one for a sec.

What this really is: a costume for a hydration backpack. Long story short, I will be running a 10K with a costume contest this weekend, three guesses what my costume will be and the first two don't count, and this makes a lovely and useful proton pack to round it out.

It is made mostly of a wonderfully light, sturdy, and dirt cheap material--the sheets of plastic that stiffen up the bottoms of reusable shopping bags. One big piece makes up the main body; I stuck it in the laser engraver at work, resized the Pack Overview pic from Stefan's pack plans to fit, and engraved it, then went over the faint lines with a silver Sharpie. The cyclotron/synchronous generator was cut from another piece, and the N-filter from a scrap. Our old friend duct tape holds the pieces together. Everything you see that is not black is sticky-back craft foam with details drawn on in Sharpie. Thank you, Commander Mark, for teaching me how to draw contour lines.

The fake pack is attached to the Camelbak with nylon cord run through holes punched in the plastic (the ones at the bottom are hidden behind the N-filter) and tied to the Camelbak.

The front of the pack gets a little love too, in the form of a length of split loom covering the drinking tube.
