Just finishing up the ALICE Frame and padding for my upcoming first pack.

Straps and kidney belt are Rothco knockoffs, but I think they'll do fine. Frame is an authentic frame repainted (it's straps were at the absolute bottom of "serviceable" so I didn't use them.)

Just added the neck roll, I think it's completely serviceable: 3/4" pipe insulation and zip ties.

Do most people cut the pack's shoulder adjustment straps to a shorter serviceable length, like in the Murray Pack's reference photo? (http://s14.photobucket.com/user/nick-a- ... 2.jpg.html)

Here is what mine looks like:

I know this doesn't answer your question (I apologize), but I would strongly suggest getting genuine surplus ALICE straps, LC1 or LC2. I had a milspec frame with rothco-like knockoffs, and my straps kept coming loose. I had to use duct tape to keep them from doing that while at a convention. I've since swapped for a vintage ALICE frame with genuine LC1 straps. So far, so good.
