The word is Greek. Endo, Ecto, Exo. Like endothermic and exoskeleton.

ἔνδον (endon, within, inside); ecto- comes from ἐκτός (ektos, outside of, beyond); exo- comes from ἔξω (exo, outer, external).

Ectoplasm in biology refers to the outer (thinner) layer of gel (cytoplasm) within a cell. The inner layer of harder gel around the cell nucleus is called the endoplasm.

Ectoplasm in spiritualism denotes a powdery or gel like substance or spiritual energy "exteriorized" by spectral emanations. It was coined in 1894 by psychical researcher Charles Richet.

I think ectoplasm and exoplasm could both be used, but the term ectoplasm stuck.
