Discuss the Ghostbusters movie that was released in 2016.

Some good ideas in there.@weepel

I had this premise way back in high school about four teenagers (different stereotypes: the goth kid, the jock, the girl of everyone's dreams, & the nerd) find out they're the living embodiment of the four horsemen of the apocalypse. They all have different ways that they find out. Date draws near, the four forces come together, chaos ensues, yadda yadda yadda.

They'd ultimately square off against the new GB recruits, but are later joined by the OGB to tackle the kids' final transformation. I also envisioned this huge showdown in Times Square & this massive creature they conjured up rising from the Hudson.

I've had this one bustling around in my head for quite awhile, since the announcement of an all female team in fact. It wouldn't be a reboot, but a true sequel. Bear in mind that this is just a rough story outline. Here goes.

GHOSTBUSTERS 3

Annie Potts as Janine Melnitz-Tully
Rick Moranis as Louis Tully
And Sigourney Weaver as Dana Barret-Venkman

We open with a woman setting up a window display in a large department store after hours. She hears strange noises and sees shadows, but tells herself it’s just her imagination. As she moves to another display, the camera comes flying at her and she screams.

Title and Theme song

The Ecto-7 is driving through Manhattan, they pull into the firehouse. Four guys in full Ghostbusters gear climb out of the Ecto-7, laughing and congratulating each other on another successful bust at the department store. (Cameos by Jason Segel, Simon Pegg, Kevin James, and Don Cheadle) They pass by JANINE MELNITZ-TULLY who they hand off the steaming ghost traps to, and go into a small kitchenette where LOUIS TULLY and WINSTON ZEDDEMORE are discussing paperwork and finances. They have a conversation and we learn that WINSTON is now the manager of the Manhattan branch. He tells the team they did a great job, then he heads out.

Cut to RAY STANTZ leading a discussion group with people who have been abducted by aliens. Lots of cameos by famous people in here, including Ivan Reitman, Lorne Michaels, Chevy Chase, etc.

WINSTON arrives and hangs back as RAY ends the meeting. The two of them go out for pizza. As they eat, they discuss the recent passing of EGON SPENGLER, and the arrangements for the funeral. The TV in the restaurant changes, and they see PETER VENKMAN doing an interview on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. They discuss Ghostbusters Int. and his falling out with the original team. WINSTON and RAY are subdued. WINSTON asks if VENKMAN is going to show up for EGON’S service. RAY says he doubts it. He hasn’t spoken to PETER in years.

Cut to a rainy afternoon in a cemetery. The memorial service for EGON is proceeding. WINSTON, RAY, JANINE, LOUIS, DANA, the new team, and several others are mourning. PETER shows up. He is tentative, but RAY embraces him, and they all relax.

Cut to firehouse after service. The old crew are eating Chinese take-out and laughing as they remember EGON and the good old days. As the party winds down, RAY goes to wash some dishes, and PETER comes to talk to him. He says there’s a problem in Hoboken that only he can deal with.

Cut to A.J. GARCIA dressed in Ghostbusters gear with a proton pack strapped to her back. She is rough and tough. She is stalking a ghost, and taking a great deal of pleasure in doing so. She thinks she has the ghost, but then bumps into SAMMIE DEWITT who is good natured, but very clumsy. They nearly blow each other’s heads off with the proton packs. The ghost comes at them, and they manage to catch half of it, closing the trap before the ghost is fully inside. They are clearly fumbling through the process. The bottom half of the ghost is flopping around like a fish out of water. A.J. pulls a table over it to hide it. A second, more fearsome ghost comes barreling toward them. They both dive out of the way. A third Ghostbuster easily dispatches the Ghost. She is obviously very skilled. This is JILL O’HARE.

Cut to ANGELA O’HARE sitting at her office desk. There is a great amount of paperwork all over the place, and she seems very frazzled. Her phone beeps, and her assistant BECKY SANDERSON says she has a visitor. ANGELA says she is too busy to see anyone, and BECKY informs her it’s someone from corporate. ANGELA tries to tidy up her desk and says send them in. RAY opens the door and walks in. “Hi ANGIE” he says softly. She is furious and begins a tirade. He cuts her off and says he’s not here for a personal visit, but on business. He says VENKMAN showed him the numbers from the branch, and that an intervention was needed. Hoboken is underperforming all the other branches. ANGELA goes on a rant about being stuck with the worst location and no support from corporate. She says she should have asked for more than a branch in their divorce, and blames RAY for sticking her in a bad location. RAY apologizes, and says he’s made a lot of mistakes, especially when it comes to her. The office door opens and JILL walks in “hey mom, we just finished up on the Simmons case. A.J. somehow cut one of the free repeaters in half….” She trails off when she sees RAY, and sheepishly says, “Hi dad.” RAY is angry. JILL is supposed to be in grad school, not working. Both JILL and ANGELA launch into an argument with RAY.

Cut to A.J. and SAMMIE outside the office talking to BECKY. They are interrupted by the entrance of DAVID BELLANY III. He is part of BELLANY and SONS Paranormal Eliminators; the Hoboken Ghostbusters main competition. His is a total tool bag who is obsessed with SAMMIE, despite her repeated dismissals of him. He taunts them and says that his dad is close to signing an exclusive deal with the New Jersey Paranormal Contracts Division, guaranteeing their company all government work for the entire state. He is boasting when JILL storms out of the office followed by ANGELA and RAY. He makes a snarky remark then leaves.

Cut to DAVID driving a hummer emblazoned with BELLANY and SONS logos. He is blasting some really ridiculously bad pop music. His phone rings, and he grabs it, but nearly runs several people off the road. He is dispatched to catch a ghost at a museum. He gives the security guard a bunch of crap, then goes to catch the ghost. In the process, he destroys several displays. He finally nabs the specter and brags to himself about how easy it was. As he goes to leave, he sees an amulet from one of the broken displays laying on the ground. He is entranced by it and picks it up. He stares intently at it until the guard comes in and breaks his reverie, shouting about the damage. DAVID pockets the amulet, and with a sarcastic remark, hands the bill to the guard. He goes back to BELLANY and SONS HQ where he informs his dad of the successful completion of the job. He takes off his jacket and throws it on a desk before heading to the kitchen for some snacks. DAVID SR grabs the jacket, yelling at his son not to make a mess. The amulet falls out of the jacket pocket, and DAVID SR is as entranced by it as his son was. He picks it up and puts it on around his neck. A spooky light emanates from the amulet and DAVID SR screams as his eyes glow. DAVID JR comes back in and screams. An unnaturally wide grin spreads across DAVID SR's face.

Cut to RAY inspecting the Hoboken Ghostbusters and their facility. He does interviews with each of the busters and we learn a bit about them and their backgrounds. None of them is very forthcoming, though. AJ is sarcastic, SAMMIE goes off on wild tangents, and JILL is harassed by RAY about finishing school.

Cut to RAY and DANA BARRET-VENKMAN having lunch and discussing the issues with the Hoboken branch and ANGELA. RAY asks how DANA and PETER deal with everything, having been married and divorced three times. She says it’s all about compromise, and learning to accept each other. She and PETER are married again, and things seem to be working this time. RAY asks if DANA thinks there is any chance of ANGELA taking him back, and DANA says there is always hope, if you’re willing to put in some work.

Cut to ANGELA’s office. RAY is listing all the issues with the branch, and detailing how they all need to be trained properly, and he’s brought some help.

Training montage. (WINSTON and RAY try and train the Hoboken busters to varying degrees of success.)

As the montage ends, the Hoboken team are on a call, and RAY, WINSTON, PETER, and ANGELA are observing their performance. At first, they seem to be working well together, employing the techniques they learned in the montage, but SAMMIE accidentally knocks AJ to the ground, and AJ's temper flares, she begins berating SAMMIE in Spanish, SAMMIE is holding back tears, and JILL is aggravated at the lack of cohesion. The three of them are arguing while the ghost they were supposed to be dispatching looks on in utter bemusement. PETER turns to RAY and says he's shutting down the branch. ANGELA glares at RAY.

We see DAVID SR who is noticeably fatter and more repulsive. He is wandering around town, oozing slime, and blabbering about being starving. People scream and run away in fright.

AJ, SAMMIE, and JILL are all sitting around in the darkened office. They are all bummed about the branch being shut down. AJ says JILL shouldn’t be upset, her daddy is one of the original Ghostbusters and she'll be able to have her pick of branch to go to next. JILL explains that her dad doesn’t want her to bust ghosts, but to finish grad school. Busting is her passion, though, and she had hoped that if her dad could have seen her in action, he would understand. It’s too late for that now. SAMMIE talks about how she was raised by her grandmother in an old house that she knew was haunted, but no one believed her. The ghost tormented her, and she became a reclusive loner. AJ says her dad died when she was young, and that she had to grow up tough and hard, that she was always too afraid to let anyone see how much she hurt. She says that the reason she wanted to be a Ghostbuster is that she hoped she might one day find her dad's ghost and kick his butt for leaving her. She says the last part as a joke to lighten the heavy load. JILL suggest they all go out for pizza. Around the corner, BECKY is listening in on their conversation, and as she musters the courage to step out and explain why she wanted to be a Ghostbuster, it's too little too late. The girls have already left. BECKY sighs, and goes to file some paperwork.

Cut to the Hoboken Busters at a pizza parlor. AJ is trying to get SAMMIE to eat a slice with anchovies. There is a great commotion outside with people running and screaming, the three Busters look up and dive out of the way just as DAVID SR, now even larger and more disgusting barrels through the window of the pizza parlor. He bellows “HUNGRY, SO HUNGRY! FEED ME!” and begins devouring everything in sight, tables, chairs, pizza, everything. The Busters don’t have their equipment, but AJ pulls out a Proton Grenade and shrugs at the incredulous look JILL gives her. She tosses it at DAVID SR who recoils in pain, screams at them, and then flees out the hole in the wall. The Busters look at each other in shock.

Cut to the Hoboken office. RAY is arguing with PETER about closing the branch. The Busters barge in, all talking simultaneously. PETER tells them to slow down and talk one at a time. JILL explains what happened at the pizza parlor and that they need to get their gear and go after DAVID SR. PETER shakes his head and says he can’t let them do so. They aren’t qualified. He says he’ll pass the info along to Manhattan and they’ll look into the matter. He locks the branch up with all the Buster’s packs and gear inside and leaves. RAY apologizes to them, and says maybe they can reopen the branch if the Busters get more training. JILL reminds RAY that he trained her for her whole life. RAY walks away dejected.

DAVID SR is even bigger and is eating a swathe through Hoboken. He pauses as he reaches the waterfront and stares hungrily at Manhattan.

The Busters are sitting in SAMMIE’s apartment discussing what is going on. The news is on the TV and reports of DAVID SR’s antics are flowing in, he has crossed the river and is perched in Times Square eating billboards and cars and anything else he can get his massive hands on. They watch as the news changes, and the Manhattan Busters pull up to the scene at Times Square in the Ecto-7. DAVID SR is now extremely massive, and he laughs as the Manhattan Busters approach him. He opens his mouth and sucks a great gulp in, swallowing the Manhattan Busters whole. The Hoboken Busters are horrified.

The Hoboken Busters drive frantically to BELLANY and SONS HQ. They barge in and find DAVID JR cowering in fright in a closet. They demand to know what’s going on. He is hesitant, but explains about stealing the amulet. They drag him along and go to the museum. They learn that the amulet belonged to ALDRIC THE DEVOURER. A medieval duke known for his cruelty and gluttony. JILL pulls out a tattered copy of Tobin’s Spirit Guide and begins reading about ALDRIC. He had been a pauper, but had made a deal with a dark sorcerer for his dukedom. Many years later, when the sorcerer returned to collect on ALDRIC’s debt, ALDRIC had him executed. With his dying breath, the sorcerer cursed ALDRIC with a never ending hunger. They decide that they have to stop him. They head back to the Hoboken Busters office, and are prepared to cut the lock, but they find it already broken open. They cautiously proceed inside and discover BECKY geared up. She sheepishly says “Hi”. JILL shrugs and says they need all the help they can get. The Busters gear up and speed off to Times Square. DAVID JR is in the back of the Ecto-NJ1, complaining and whining. SAMMIE slaps him, telling him to man up and AJ watches approvingly.

At the Manhattan Busters firehouse, RAY, PETER, and WINSTON are gearing up. JANINE says “LOOK!” and points to the TV showing the Hoboken Busters pulling up. PETER face palms and RAY has a proud smirk. WINSTON says “Let’s watch and see what happens.”

The Hoboken Busters arrive at the scene and gear up. JILL tries to bolster the Busters spirits, but they are all apprehensive. They grit their teeth and get to work. They are a different team, working together smoothly and efficiently. They are zapping ALDRIC, but their beams are having very little effect. JILL says that he’s grown too strong and they need to think of something else. They need to destroy the amulet, but ALDRIC is guarding it. They need a distraction. From behind them PETER says “maybe we can help with that.” The original Busters are all geared up, and though old, they look very heroic in their gear. JILL says “Dad?” RAY says they saw them on TV and that they had done a fantastic job, but, he says, one last lesson is to always accept help when offered. The two teams work well together and the distraction works. The combined power of the seven beams is enraging ALDRIC and he is becoming reckless. The amulet swings free and RAY says “NOW!” and he and JILL both blast the amulet at full nuetrona. The amulet shatters and ALDRIC screams in fury. He begins to shrink and chunks of wreckage fall out of him covered in slime. The Manhattan Busters flop out, alive but dazed, and soon DAVID SR is all that is left, sprawled out in goo. He wakes up to see the Original and Hoboken Busters standing over him. He opens his mouth to say something, but a belch emanates instead. He smiles sheepishly, then belches again, and again, and again, and ALDRIC in spirit form pours out of his mouth. The Busters all grab their throwers, ready for the fight to continue, but a trap activates, and ALDRIC is sucked in. The smoke clears and DAVID JR is standing in a heroic pose holding the trap. He says “Yup, I did it again. I’m the best.” SAMMIE walks over to him, acting seductive and he is obviously enjoying it. She knees him in the groin and takes the trap, skipping back to the other Busters.

Cut to a sunny afternoon outside Hoboken city hall. Deputy Director of Paranormal Contracts, James Lindberg (cameo by Norm MacDonald) is presenting the Hoboken Busters the exclusive contract for the state of New Jersey. The Original Busters, Dana, Louis, Janine, and the Manhattan Busters are in the audience. DAVID SR and DAVID JR are also in the audience and they are furious. They are both wearing neck braces, despite neither receiving any neck injury. RAY and ANGELA are talking, and he apologizes for everything. She tells him not to worry about it, its water under the bridge. RAY grabs her and kisses her passionately. She shoves him away and asks what he is doing. He says he thought they were getting back together. She rolls her eyes and walks off.

Theme song plays and credits roll.

I would be careful to not force every character back in from the first two films, I think that is one of several issues that dragged GB2 down. For as funny as Rick Moranis is, his part was done at the end of GB1. Dana and Oscar should have moved on with life by now, too. You are not going to see the universe grow if we keep revolving around not only the GBs but all of their customers as well.

Like a lot of others, I'd probably, in a perfect world, go for the "new team in the old universe" approach. In that dream world, my Ghostbusters revival would be based on the story I did called "Eye of Aretpo":

http://www.ectozone.com/ff/gb2021aretpo1.php
2021. A strange murder in London brings a young detective to the United States in search of answers. Three children of legends are reunited. Behind the scenes, a plot is in motion that will force all of them to embrace the legacy of the Ghostbusters. While Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler, and Winston Zeddemore chose that life, others were chosen by it; a new generation is running out of time, and the legacy of the Ghostbusters is calling. Forcefully.

Three of the five are Ghostbuster kids, two are not. Three women, two men.

As written it's based on RGB/EGB canon and was released before the Video Game came out, so doesn't use anything from that. For live action I'd probably rewrite a thing or two:
This Post Contains Spoilers
And while I'm at it, I guess a pony.

Oh god no! That film is the worst most painful thing I've ever tried to sit through. The acting almost gave me cancer.
For a fan movie it was pretty good. Definitely one of the better ones or least worst ones.

I would've gone the EGB route and have the surviving GBS train a group of young people to help them deal with a increasing number of new hauntings. I would've gotten Maurice LaMarche to record a few lines that the recruits find on a old a tape where Egon talks about his theories.

Maybe use the Boogeyman or Sam Hain as the main villain. The proton beams can be CGI, but the monsters would mainly be practical.

I prefer cartoons over live action, so I'd rather revive The Real Ghostbusters as a new series or feature (maybe 3D animation, but preferably 2D animation) with Egon, Ray, Peter and Winston, you know, the main characters of Ghostbusters. You don't make Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles without Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo, so why replace the Ghostbusters?

However, if I was to make a new live action Ghostbusters movie, since the original actors are old and Harold Ramis is gone, I'd have new actors play the original characters and have it be just another adventure for the Ghostbusters. Just because it's new actors doesn't mean you have to go back to the beginning and start the story over, it could still be a continuation.

It could still be set in the present and the Ghostbusters don't have to age, because it's fiction and the timeline doesn't have to make sense. Look at how The Simpsons stay the same even though they are always in the present day. Or, Ghostbusters could be perpetually set in the 1980's or early 1990's, which would be fine with me. That way it could pick up right after Ghostbusters II, like the game.

My new movie would not simply be called Ghostbusters, it would have a subtitle relevant to the story. Ghostbusters I & II and The Real Ghostbusters have the perfect balance of seriousness and light-heartedness, so I would maintain that, not make a full-on comedy nor a gritty Dark Kight (ugh) style. Old school effects all the way. I would also consider giving the Ghostbusters multicolour costumes like in the cartoon and action figures.

Please not! No new actors could ever cover for the original ones. These guys are the Ghostbusters and shouldn't be replaced. If you want something fresh let the remaining ones train a new team!

I like this one, but the colours should be looking more real. Like more of an olive drab for Winston instead of mint green and no pink collar on Egon's grey one. Ray could simple use the regular tan and Peter cold have coyote brown. Those are all colours you can actually get in flight suits!
Make it animated if you want, but don't replace the original actors as the first Ghostbusters!

I would have made it more like Jurassic World. It would have been a sequel-reboot focusing on new characters rather than the original team, however instead of JW ignoring the likes of Alan Grant and Ian Malcolm I would have had the original Ghostbusters appear in cameos during the beginning of the movie (where they realise they are too old to bust ghosts during a hilarious 'disadvantages of being old' montage featuring a slowed down version of Ray Parker Jnr's theme song) and elsewhere training up a new team to bust ghosts.

The new team would have consisted of Chris Pratt, David Tennant, Noel Clarke and Ben Stiller.

Harold Ramis would be represented via a ghost of Egon Spengler who assists the new team in catching ghosts and spouts lines from the videogame.

The big bad would be a human character (I agree with Paul Feig's idea of a human antagonist) who bitches about the new Ghostbusters team not being as good as the originals on social media and sets out to prove they aren't as good by manipulating them into releasing every ghost the original Ghostbusters have ever caught from the containment unit and filming them doing it on his phone to upload to YouTube.

The 'Stay Puft' style monster would be one of those emojis, only giant-sized to reflect popular culture. Times have changed since Stay Puft.

Slimer would be in it.

The original Ecto-1 would be in the beginning montage, only it would cough and splutter as it makes slow progress on the way to a Ghostbusting job. It would be replaced with an Ecto-1 that looks similar to the one in the reboot to show the business has little money to afford on cars.

The Proton Packs in the opening montage would take ages to warm up and the original Ghostbusters would have to blow into the neutron wand in order to get them to work. The new Proton Packs would look pretty much the same as the ones in the Reboot only without the heart sticker.

The PKE Meter would appear old and outdated. It would be replaced with a PKE Smart Watch.

I don't like the ideas about Ghostbusters becoming a big corporate brand with franchises around the world and having the government involved. I prefer to think of the Ghostbusters as unique, independent adventurers. Maybe they can encounter other groups of paranormal investigators and eliminators around the world, but they don't have to take on the Ghostbusters name and brand. Yes, Ghostbusters is a business, but I like to think they mainly do it for the love of the paranormal. After all, there's been lots of times in the cartoon when they helped ghosts and other creatures rather than busted them. They just bust the trouble makers.

I want Egon, Ray, Winston, Peter, Janine, Louis and Slimer to be immortal characters like Batman, who has been played by many actors and re-imagined many times. Some versions are good, some not so good, depending on your tastes. Extreme Ghostbusters is OK, but to me it's mostly a failed experiment. You can guess what I think of the concept of the new movie. I don't want the characters replaced. That does not mean the first Ghostbusters movie has to be remade, that story has already been told wonderfully, but the original characters can still be re-imagined and have new adventures.

I agree that reboots these days tend to not be good and that's why my knee-jerk reaction to the news that they were remaking Ghostbusters (even before I heard they were replacing the characters) was "No way! Sacrilege!", but think about how many times reboots have been good. My favourite Batman movie is Batman (1966), but Batman (1989) is wonderful too, as well as several of the cartoon series. Batman (1989) is not really a remake because it does not tell the same story as Batman (1966), it re-imagines the characters (does not replace them) and tells a new story. More recently, there's the wonderful Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated series.

Some of you here are good writers, but don't you think it would be hard on Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson to play parts where they have to talk about Egon being dead?

Anyway, none of you have to worry about what I would do because it's not up to me. These are just my thoughts right now and it's possible that I might see things differently later.

The thing I don't like about letting new actors take over the roles is it just feels wrong to me. Like with James Bond. My favorite Bond is still Sean Connery and he always will be! The other Bond movies just aren't as good as the Connery ones. The 1966 Batman movie was intended as a pilot for the tv show with the same actors and costumes but got hold back for some time and the series started early. It was never meant to be a stand alone movie!

But if you want to make a two decades old tv show into a 2h Hollywood Blockbuster movie, you have to change a few things here and there and kind of reboot the story to show the beginnings. Now the 89 Batman movie did it right(for the protocol, I like it much more than the most recent reboot movies), but a lot of others didn't. I also didn't like that they replaced the actor and the costume a few times in the following movies. The last two of them even had the same Robin but different Batmans and neither of them was a good one. Clooney felt completely wrong as Batman and as much as I like Kilmer, he's also not a good Batman!

Btw Batman is far from being immortal! He's just a normal guy with fancy equipment just like the Ghostbusters. The writers could kill him any time they feel like it would be a good end! And he did age in the cartoons! In "Batman of the Future" old man Bruce Wayne realizes that he's too old to be Batman and that he'll get killed if he continues. So he starts to train a teenage boy to become the next Batman. Kind of a soft reboot with a new main character, but still set in the same universe! It was a bit like Extreme Ghostbusters, but very much like EGB it didn't have many fans.

I wouldn't mind if they make a new cartoon or a live action tv series with new actors(completely new faces that didn't have any bigger roles yet), because it's a different medium. But I don't like to see the old Ghostbusters portrayed by new actors in a movie. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson will always be the only real "Movie Ghostbusters"!

Just imagine they would remake Beverly Hills Cop with Will Smith! Sounds wrong, doesn't it?

Understandable points, Skyknight. It's all in how you look at it, I guess.

When I say "immortal", I don't mean that they're immortal in the their own reality, I just mean the fictional characters could be around in our world forever. They can age and die, but it doesn't have to be written and I prefer not the see it.

There's no way Egon would've had a daughter. I always figured he was Asexual, his focus was always on science, not the ladies. A nephew or niece might work.

How would I do the remake? I'd make it it's own story. Maybe some nods to the original here and there but It would be a completely different movie. I'd chose a mixed team that would work together as equals. I'd chose a 1975 hearse for Ecto.

I disagree, remember Egon's reaction in GBII when Dana kisses him on the cheek? "Now let's see what happens when we take the puppy away"

With such a brilliant scientific mind, I would think that Egon would engage in intercourse specifically FOR sceience, the spread the Spengler seed. Not for pleasure, but for the betterment of man.

I'm sorry to inform you that Egon and Janine got married for a few months, then got divorced because Janine hated how he devoted more time to science than with her. :-P

Zach Blanton wrote:I've been thinking on this a lot lately!

BUT you know, I do like Erin Gilbert, Abby Yates, Jillian Holtzmann, Patty Tollins, & the whole premise of Rowan! I've had a plot rolling around in my head for awhile, so here goes ...

Rowan was a 1920s/1930s mafia gangster in New York City, who also delved into the occult & ghost worlds, and wanted to connect with ghost spirits. Rowan is arrested and subsequently executed, but not before he says that he shall return one day in the future and terrorize New York from the spirit world.

We go to 2014, where we see the funeral of Egon Spengler and in attendance is Venkman, Stantz, Zeddemore, Janine Melnitz, Louis Tully, Walter Peck, Dana Barrett, Dana's son Oscar Wallance, & Egon's niece Jillian Holtzmann.

Jillian Holtzmann is Egon Spengler's niece.

After the funeral, Ray, Peter, & Winston tell Jillian that they have something to show her that Egon had left for her. In essence, Egon had given the Ghostbusters headquarters firehouse to Jillian in his will. The original three would give Jillian a brief tower of the firehouse and they'd end up cranking up the old Ecto-1, which Egon had renamed back to from the Ecto-2. We'd get a cool scene of the original theme song playing as the siren blares and the original three attempt to drive the Ecto out of the firehouse into the street, only for it break down and start pouring out smoke from the hood.

Jillian says she would turn the firehouse into a paranormal investigative center, & Ray says that Egon would be proud of her.

Two years later ...

We're introduced to Erin Gilbert & Abby Yates, Gilbert attempting to get tenant at Columbia University, but her chances of that are ruined when Yates publishes a book that she & Gilbert had written years ago. Gilbert & Yates reunite when someone comes to Gilbert asking her for help on a paranormal issue at a local mansion.

Yates tells Gilbert that she knows someone that can aide them in their first paranormal investigation, Holtzmann. Yates, Gilbert, & Holtzmann goes to this mansion, where they see the ghost from the trailer, that ends up puking green slime onto Gilbert, with Yates filming the entire thing.

After the incident, Gilbert who had been a skeptic, admits on camera that ghosts are real while yelling hysterically. The video makes it back to her boss at Columbia University, which coupled with the fact that she basically co-authored a paranormal book with Yates, has no choice but to Gilbert go.

After this, Gilbert, Yates, & Holtzmannn decide to start taking calls about paranormal sightings in the city, and they eventually start calling themselves the Ghostbusters, and the Mayor's spokeswoman says that the woman aren't to be taken seriously, & even local news station ask whether the Ghostbusters should be taken seriously or not.

We then are introduced to Patty Tollins, a Metro worker in the NYC subway system. We see her at her ticket booth, doing her job, & smiling at people passing by. After this however, Tollins goes to investigate a strange noise coming from the subway tunnel and as she is walking down the line she shines her flashlight onto a faint blue haze, which turns out to be a group of ghosts, some that look like they are dressed in 1920s clothing.

After her sighting, Patty decides to go to to the Ghostbusters, who had set up temporary shop above a Chinese restaurant while the firehouse is renovated for them. Patty tells the three girls that she knows New York, that they need her because she knows all of the city's history & the nooks & crannies that they wouldn't be able to find otherwise.

After they hire Patty onto the team, she creates the team's suits, as well as gets a Cadillac hearse that would become the team's vehicle of transportation.

We are later introduced to Kevin, who comes to be the Ghostbusters' receptionist, and Gilbert who has a huge crush on Kevin, instantly hires him, though he is an idiot.

To make a long story short, all of the sudden paranormal activity in New York is caused by Rowan, who has kidnapped & acquired enough spirits in the spirit realm to become a very powerful being. Rowan's next step is to reenter the physical world again, almost as if he's coming back to life.

Rowan however is strong enough to enter the physical world as a ghost, there in lies where he is able to possess Kevin and use him as his vehicle to start his evil plan, which is to inundate Earth with ghosts & spirits in order for him to come back to life and wreak havoc on New York & even the world.

We later learn that one of the spirits Rowan had managed to capture was the spirit of Egon Spengler, who was about to crossover to the afterlife, when Rowan nabbed his spirit and absorbed him, basically holding him hostage.

Rowan continually taunts Holtzmann with this, revealing to her that he is holding her uncle hostage from crossing over into peace, & even uses it against Holtzman, in order for her to help him with research about leaving the spirit realm essentially and return to a physical form.

Holtzmann's reluctant research & Rowan's growing power leads him to have the ability to take the form of anything and therefore he exits Kevin & asks the Ghostbusters what form would they like him to take, and Patty remembers seeing a Ghostbusters logo in the subway and that it ultimately what Rowan turns into, in the climax of the film.

Before the huge climax, the team feels defeated, they feel as if they can't conquer Rowan and his gang of evil spirits by themselves, which leads them to reach out to Venkman, in attempt to get the original Ghostbusters to help them in their big battle. Venkman initially denies and says that Ray & Winston wouldn't be interested either, as they are getting up in age. Venkman gives the girls an encouraging speech and tells that they have the capability to conquer the threat themselves.

Back to the climax of the film ... As our four Ghostbusters gear up to battle Rowan in his final form as the logo, Venkman, Stantz, & Zeddemore appear willing to help. Venkman says that after things started to get really bad they couldn't just sit back & let NYC go down to an old dead mobster.

The battle ensues, & at the end, as Holtzmann, Yates, Gilbert, Tollins, Venkman, Stantz, & Zeddemore are crossing the streams and zapping Rowan, spirits are seen leaving Rowan's body signifying that they are free to cross over now into peace. We then hear the voice of Egon (voiced by the voice actor that voiced Egon in the Real Ghostbusters) urging Holtzmann on to defeat Rowan so that he may live eternity in peace.

In the end, Egon's words of encouragement help both Ghostbuster teams defeat Rowan into a mess of white goo (sound familiar?).

In a post credits scene, we see Dana & her son Oscar standing over a storage shed full of Ghostbuster memorabilia, with Dana asking Oscar if he's sure he wants to do this, & Oscar says he's sure of it ...

Sequel? Well, I'd like to see Kevin & Oscar form their own Ghostbusters team, but that's another idea for another time!

This only a rough version of what I had in my head!
I love it!! Oh and it's Patty *Tolan*.

I would add to this idea, by having Jillian be Egon and Janine's daughter (she dyed her hair and used the name Holtzmann as a pseudonym to not be overshadowed by her famous dad). I mean, look at her, she's got Egon's quirkiness AND Janine's sass! At the part where the originals come to help, I would include Janine along with Venkman, Stantz and Zeddemore, because over time she got sick of being stuck on the sidelines while the boys had all the fun. She'd have taught herself how to wield a Neutrona Wand on the sly, before and after Egon died.

Pretty much they made the movie somewhat similar to how I would have made it.

The only changes I really would make would be a mix gender team(both guys and girls, and probably more members with brand new names, no using the originals names), some of the unused ideas that were in early drafts of the original movies script(like the gas station containment unit, the main villian having an office decorated with human bones, several destructor forms, etc), and would have made it more of a darker action thriller, pretty much I want you to question if they will actually save the day or not, as well as possibly give a grown adult nightmares.

Extreme Ghostbusters would have been the basis of my reboot, only difference is that i would have both the original team and the extreme team in the movie. The originals would be training the EGB through most of the movie, even taking them on call assignments. All 8 of them would battle the main villian in the climax of the movie.

Cast :
Eduardo - Hal Sparks
Roland - John Boyega
Garrett - Emile Hirsch
Kylie - Audrey Peebles
Egon - CGI resurrected Harold Ramis with Maurice Lamarche providing the voice
Ray - Dan Aykroyd
Peter - Bill Murray
Winston - Ernie Hudson
Dana - Sigourney Weaver
Oscar - Drake Bell
Louis - Rick Moranis

If the new Ghostbusters movie gets a sequel, they could still tie in the original Ghostbusters. As was stated:
This Post Contains Spoilers
This allows for the possibility that the world moved past the events of the 1980s.

With that stated, ignore the cameos we've seen. In the new Ghostbusters 2 have Abby getting more into paranormal research. Her search for reference leads her to Ray's Occult Books. In this movie, Egon's deceased, Peter's whereabouts are unknown. Winston's around and has his own life (but pops up as needed) and Dana ( and Oscar) aren't even mentioned.

Ray sold the firehouse years ago (the mortgage was in his name so he'd be the one to sell it) and returned to his shop. Abby has no idea about the original Ghostbusters and only has an acquaintance with Ray through his bookshop. In the course of her research she discovers the existence of the original Ghostbusters and Ray's history with the paranormal. The existence of the original Ghostbusters (who are all but forgotten) explains how the modern Ghostbusters got their name... (the crowd calling out "Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters..." was sparked by by a faded memory of a team that once was).

Ray takes on a Yoda sort of role... there for advice and information but not an actual member of the team.

You're 100% correct! because while watching this movie I saw a lot of openings on how this could've been a pathway of part 3 instead of a Reboot.

I haven't given much thought into a better plot. But they should of kept to original roots everything as original as possible. All reboots should be that way. Cause then it upsets true original fans like me. They can easily take original ideas and make it modern. I have not seen the movie so idk if some things were taken from the original.

I posted this on Reddit and got zero love for it. Maybe here's a better, more receptive audience.

Copy/pasted.

Straight up - I have to admit that I haven't seen the new film. I saw the trailers and didn't find any spark or connection with the new characters. My primary issue is a simple one: in Ghostbusters, Venkman et al weren't aware they were in a comedy. The characters could have been lifted from a contemporary horror. In the trailers for the new film, from what I could see, the characters knew they were in a comedy and act accordingly. They don't seem to take anything seriously and so the film seems to lose a lot of the tension of the original.

Right, so that's the disclaimer out the way. Which brings us to the point. I fancy myself as a bit of a writer, and an RPG-er and I write and game based on inspiration from the media around me. Based on that, I figured that I could write a different story than Sony produced. To make things a bit of a challenge, I intend on keeping Sony's new characters and their characterisation.

Below is the synopsis of this story...my fan-fiction, how I would've done a 2016 Ghostbusters film/book. Oh, and one further challenge I like to set myself is to name chapters after songs - I've chosen REM for this experiment.

GHOSTBUSTERS: COLLAPSE INTO NOW

Chapter 1 - The Final Straw
Open with Pete, Winston and Ray sitting on ECTO-1. They're covered in slime, smoking traps scattered around them. Through conversation, they reveal that Egon is missing (dimension-hopping, Sliders-style) and with his disappearance, Janine has quit. They realise they're old, and that things haven't turned out they way they thought. Pete sighs, stands up, and asks "Are we done?" Winston and Ray agree that, yeah, they're done.
Credit to one of you for this scene - I can't remember the username to attribute appropriate credit, though.

Chapter 2 - I Took Your Name
Stantz is the only one left in the HQ as the mortgage is in his name. He goes back to Columbia University to see if he can get back into academia. He stops into the Psychology Department, where the original three first met. There he meets Drs Abby Yates and Erin Gilbert who are parapsychologists. Part of their research is interviewing Dean Yager's ghost about the start of the Ghostbusters. Stantz asks the women if they'd like to make things a little less theoretical...
The women talk to their friend, the experimental physicist Dr Jillian Holtzmann who is about to be kicked out for blowing up another lab. With smoking eyebrows, she agrees.

Chapter 3 - Welcome to the Occupation
The girls’ first mission, which will mirror the Sedgewick Hotel scene. Perhaps even have Slimer, but maybe not.

Chapter 4 - Imitation of Life
Kevin Beckman encounters animated mannequins in the clothing shop he works in. He is previously shown to have decent organisational and interpersonal skills. Calls the Ghostbusters, who turn up. Gilbert has the hots for him and offers him a job as their secretary, which he accepts.

Chapter 5 - Losing My Religion
Father Rowan North has lost his faith and is losing his mind. He talks to the spirits of his dead congregation. They didn't want to leave, which makes him fear for the afterlife. Several apparitions are not of his flock. They taunt him until he finds a glowing mystical book in one of the crypts beneath his church. The book details how to get to a place called the Dreamlands.

Chapter 6 - All the Right Friends
The Ghostbusters hire Patty Tolan as their historical guide after a call into the catacombs beneath Grand Central Station. Gilbert is knocked out, and Tolan proves her worth with a proton pack, helping to bust the ghosts they're hunting. The Ghostbusters offer her a job.

Chapter 7 - Carnival of Sorts
Montage of the Ghostbusters going on various jobs and getting experience.

Chapter 8 - Daysleeper
North wakes in the middle of his church facing a youthful man, Crane. He tells North that he will bring peace to the restless dead by helping them cross into the Dreamlands. North does so, sacrificing his dead congregation and thus empowering Crane. Parts of the church are replaced by weird dimensional structures (gothic architecture and weird glowing lights etc.)

Chapter 9 - I Wanted To Be Wrong
Martin Hiess, an old flame of Yates', gets caught up in a bust at a gala dance. He works at City Hall and has only ever tolerated the Ghostbusters’ activity due to pressure from the public. But after the girls completely destroy the gala, he publicly decries the Ghostbusters, calling them frauds and/or dangerous criminals. He sets out to shut them down

Chapter 10 - Dream
North is now bringing people back to the church and killing them. Crane is consuming the resulting ghosts and his power is stretching from the Dreamlands. More and more of the church and the rest of the block into hellish-ness. The Ghostbusters each suffer a nightmare. The news the next day shows that this is a city-wide problem, seemingly focussed on the church. Tolan recognises the church from her studies, and vows to investigate

Chapter 11 - Exhuming McCarthy
Tolan and Holtzmann enter the church and follow a whole bunch of weirdness into the crypts. There, they find North and his book – North is skeletal, having been continually drained by Crane. He babbles about the Dreamlands and the coming of the Dreamer King. Tolan and Holtzmann return to HQ with North, and begin to work out what’s going on.

Chapter 12 - Tired of Singing Trouble
Yates heads off Hiess as he goes for lunch. She tries to convince him that what the Ghostbusters do is just as important as what he does. He tells her he’s sorry, but he’s already started the process to shut them down

Chapter 13 - Bang and Blame
Kevin fields a call…Yates has been arrested for hitting Hiess. Tolan and Gilbert jump in the car and head to the precinct to post bail. Holtzmann continues working on new bits of kit whilst keeping an eye on North. Crane manifests from the book and transports the HQ to the Dreamlands.

Chapter 14 - Bad Day
The three Ghostbusters get back to the HQ to find it gone. In the Dreamlands, Stantz, Holtzmann and Kevin are using everything they have keep from being devoured by the inhabitants. Crane directs the creatures to go for the containment unit – he wants to feast on the ghosts

Chapter 15 - Maps and Legends
The Ghostbusters hightail to the library to find everything they can about the Dreamlands. They find that Crane was one of a number of cultists buried with magical books: each contains a way into the Dreamlands, but they also are a way back. The cultists were powerful enough that they could shape reality to their desires – but only in the Dreamlands. However, if they could become powerful enough, they could bring the Dreamlands into reality The other cultists appear to be dead – not ghosts or dreams

Chapter 16 - I Don’t Sleep, I Dream
Crane breaks the doors off the firehouse. He reveals he is the last of the cult, the Dreamer King. He killed his fellows, devoured their essences and is now almost powerful enough to bring his dream city into the real world. The Ghostbusters drop back, unable to defend their position any more. Crane reaches the containment unit and begins to feed

Chapter 17 - The Wake-Up Bomb
The Ghostbusters arrive back at the HQ with the recovered books. They begin the spell to bring the building back from the Dreamlands when Hiess and a bunch of police turn up. They try to arrest the girls for desecration of graves, public endangerment. Yates hits Hiess again. At that, the HQ comes back. So to does Crane’s dream city – huge swathes of New York have been turned into the same weirdness from the church. Dreamland monsters running all over.

Chapter 18 - It’s the End of the World As We Know It
Holtzmann and the others escape the building, straight into the arms of the police. Stantz collapses from a non-fatal heart attack: he's way too old for this shit. With the new team, assembled, the Ghostbusters inform the police they can be arrested later – they have a Dreamer King to put to sleep. Crane floats out to them, part-ghost and part-god. He wrecks the street. The Ghostbusters have a running battle with him, falling back into a nearby building. Tolan shows Holtzmann one of the other books they recovered. Inside, is a series of scribbled numbers and symbols. The others don’t know what they are, but she does – frequencies. She retunes each of their packs.

Chapter 19 - What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?
Full-scale battle with Crane. The new frequencies blast chunks from him and his city. Reality stutters – the Ghostbusters fall in and out of the Dreamlands. They struggle on. Kevin distracts Crane. The Ghostbusters blast hiim to pieces, returning New York to normal.

Chapter 20 - The Great Beyond
With Stantz recovering in hospital, the Ghostbusters approach him with an offer for the firehouse. After he signs, they take on the mantle of Ghostbusters properly. Something breaks or a ghost escapes right at the end.

END

Okay, so that's a long 'un, with a whole bunch of plot holes and stuff that needs fleshed out, but as an early draft...any thoughts, questions or comments?
