FACTS

1. Fact: Columbia Pictures/Sony Pictures have commissioned Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky to write a script for a third screenplay. This is what is referred to as development of a film, which does not guarantee by any means the production of a third film. (Source: http://www.variety.com/VR1117991624.html)

2. Fact: Harold Ramis has confirmed the writing team to the Chicago Tribune while Dan Aykroyd briefly confirmed the development on E! Online. (Sources: http://featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com ... is-co.html and http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/b26847_ ... a_rap.html)

3. Fact: None of the original cast has committed to the creation of a third film, in fact no deals with the original cast will be made until the Eisenberg and Stupnitsky script has been completed. There has been NO official or reputable media outlet discussion on casting for the third film and all casting information should be considered rumor at this point. (Source: http://www.variety.com/VR1117991624.html)

4. Fact: Jason Reitman (son of Ghostbusters I and II director Ivan) will not be directing the third film. Similarly, his father Ivan is not currently involved in the development of the third film. (Source http://blog.allmovie.com/2007/12/21/the ... ablo-cody/)

5. Fact: IMDB has posted multiple entries for a 2010 and 2011 Ghostbusters film. IMDB is user generated content and entries like this are not uncommon. The professional version of IMDB used by studios and industry professionals called Baseline Studio System has updated its record on Sep 5 2008 4:05PM - reflecting the change in status of the project (from "Inactive" to "Development") and listing Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky as writers, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis as "Source Material (from Characters)", and lists Ivan Reitman currently as a producer. (Source: Me, Troy - and no, you can't have my login for Baseline)

6. Fact: It is unclear and undetermined how, if at all, the new film being written by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky will tie into any previous concepts for a third Ghostbusters film. No plot details and no story concepts have been publicly discussed.

7. Fact: Ain't It Cool News reported at Fantastic Fest, that Bill Murray has stated he knows about Eisenberg and Stupnitsky supposedly writing the script for the next incarnation of the franchise and has also stated that his interest in the franchise has been renewed since recording his voice for the video game. (Full Official Interview & Ghostbusters section of the interview.)

8. Fact: Harold Ramis has stated, while promoting Year One(written by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky), that the original GBs will be in mentor roles for the third film. ( TheBadAndUgly.com Article )

9. Fact: Sony confirmed at ShoWest, via their Twitter account, that GB3 is going into production(along with MIB3). ( Via Proton Charging )
Similarly: Sony president Roy Breuer also announced, personally, at ShoWest that GB3 will be made for a 2011 release. ( SlashFilm.com Article )

10. Fact: Judd Apatow is not producing or having anything to do with the production of GB3. ( TheBadAndUgly.com Article )

11. Fact: Sigourney Weaver doesnt expect to be in Ghostbusters 3. ( SciFiSquad.com )

RUMORS

1. While both Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis have expressed excitement of possibility of their involvement, Seth Rogen and Judd Apatow are not currently involved in the development of the film. Additionally, Seth Rogen has told various media outlets that he has not been approached to do a third film but thought it was a "cool rumor." (Source: http://www.cinematical.com/2008/08/04/c ... rs-sequel/)

2. John Landis spoke to the GBUK Elite about the possibilty of a CGI Ghostbusters 3. While coming from a reputable source, this information contradicts concrete fact printed in Hollywood trade paper Variety. There are two possibilities, either Landis had heard outdated information (Dan Aykroyd had toyed with the idea in the past but allegedly all of the concepts were worked into Ghostbusters: The Video Game) - or there could be a simultaneous development occurring on a CG feature. (Source: http://www.gbfans.com/community/viewtop ... =39&t=6496)

3. Bloody-Disgusting Radio Podcast Episode 6 talks about GB3 and the GB franchise, similarly Ain't It Cool News has collected as much known information on September 4th, 2008 about the third film. (Source: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/38184)

4. Dan states that Sigourney Weaver will be in GB3. Weather or not she has actually agreed to be in this yet has yet to be confirmed by her. ( Chud.com Article )

5. Rick Morannis has not stated that he is coming out of retirement for GB3 even though Harold Ramis has stated he and the rest of the original cast would come back. ( MTV Article )

Thanks, again, AJ.

FACT: This is as close as we've ever been to Ghostbusters 3. There have been two big hang-ups all these years. Yes, Billy Murray, but even more so? Columbia Pictures. The fact that they've reversed course on such a stubborn, long-held stance is proof to me that they've decided to go all the way. So don't douse my fire, man. This is huge. Admit it. It feels good.

FACT:
On imdb.com there's Ghostbusters (2011) up.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1289401/

imdb.com also has Ghostbusters 3 (2010) up.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1289402/

I'm just saying its there and that's all.
Doesn't mean ONE MORE thing other than Lee and Gene are writing a screenplay.

I like that its finally going to be written, venkmaster. But I'll wait until Sony/Columbia announces it to actually jump out of my skin, with joy.

Thanks Slaysghosts.

3. One of the rumors is that the writers of the American version of The Office are supposedly writing it. Columbia/Sony will and have NOT confirmed this.
This isn't a rumor, this is a fact. Sony has confirmed that the writers have been hired and are working on it - what they will not discuss or confirm is anything else involving casting (because of the deals the sizable cast would command) and they would not comment further than the writing assignment.

Per the Variety article:

http://www.variety.com/VR1117991624.html
Columbia Pictures is getting serious about scaring up a new installment of its blockbuster "Ghostbusters" franchise.

The studio has set "The Office" co-exec producers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky to write a script for a film designed to bring back together the original cast of Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson.

Studio would not comment on the development and has been mum on recent rumors that there was interest in making another installment of the franchise.
Why is this? Well, funny you should ask because you have to keep reading the article (which I wish some people would actually do... in its entirety... because reading is fun and actually might inform you of something!)
No deals will be made with the original cast until the script is ready, but the gross percentage will certainly be an issue. Sony has a standing policy not to allow more than 25% of first dollar gross out the door.
Without getting into the Hollywood nuts and bolts, it's a lot like telling folks you're starting a new NFL team in Los Angeles but you don't want to start talking players because you haven't built the stadium, found out how much the stadium is going to cost to build, so on... and knowing that the football players are going to be one of your biggest (and trickiest) expenses that you have to manage carefully, you need to play your cards close to your chest. If Murray finds out Aykroyd signed for 10 mil, he'll want 20... so on...

Did you read past #3?. #4 explains just that. That the script won't be offered to the original cast until its done being written.

Mjollnir wrote: Did you read past #3?. #4 explains just that. That the script won't be offered to the original cast until its done being written.
ru·mor /ˈrumər/ [roo-mer]
–noun
1. a story or statement in general circulation without confirmation or certainty as to facts: a rumor of war.
2. gossip; hearsay
3. Archaic. a continuous, confused noise; clamor; din.

I'm trying to get you off of using that word when it's not necessary. #3 is not a rumor and #4 is worded so poorly that I was trying to get you to correct it. Nothing has been mentioned about recasting, the FACTS merely state that deals will not be made with the ORIGINAL cast until the script is finished. You're spearheading the definitive list of facts and rumors, might as well adapt to get it correct, right?
#67535
Indeed. Thank you Mr. Solo.
#67549
Argh...
Fact: If the script is written it will be offered to the ORIGINAL cast. If they don't take it the cast will be re-casted or the script rewritten so that they will only have cameos or their characters will be on in an advisory capacity in the film.
Where is that from?

Here's how I'd write number 4:

Fact: None of the original cast has committed to the creation of a third film, in fact no deals with the original cast will be made until the Eisenberg and Stupnitsky script has been completed. There has been NO official or reputable media outlet discussion on casting for the third film and all casting information should be considered rumor at this point.

Thanks Ben. I probably should have edited it even more and made a fact and rumor sections but that seems way better than what I did.

Murray open to 'Ghostbusters' return
Friday, September 26 2008, 20:25 BST

By Simon Reynolds, Entertainment Reporter

Rex Features
Bill Murray has hinted that he may star in a new Ghostbusters movie.

The actor, who has previously expressed his reluctance to return for a further instalment in the franchise, said he would be willing to put on a proton pack for Ghostbusters 3.

"I think the wounds from Ghostbusters 2 have healed," he told reporters at US film festival Fantastic Fest.

The 58-year-old said he approves of Columbia Pictures's hiring of Office duo Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg to pen the script, saying: "That could work, that's a good idea to get a fresh look at it."

He added that he enjoyed recording dialogue for the upcoming Ghostbusters video game.

"It was fun to do it again," he said. "I found myself walking down Fifth Avenue singing the song (Ray Parker Jr.'s 'Ghostbusters'). People were like, 'That guy's really full of himself!'"

According to this months' Empire magazine, Sigourney Weaver is saying that she recently did a benefit with Bill Murray that she enjoyed and would love to work with them all again. This is in a tiny feature they have on the status of GB3.

So, Dana Barrett to the very vague rumour mill!

Please, for the love of Gozer, NO DANA BARRETT in GB3! If anything, just give her a cameo.

She doesn't need to be the centre of any ghost stuff, but for goodness' sake have her there for Venkman. Does anyone really want to see a 58 year old Bill Murray running after girls? grim.
#82208
I think it is a bad idea just because she's not in the video game. I really hope when/if another movie is made they keep it in line with the game and since they are not together in the game it just doesn't make sense to put her in the movie. Rick Moranis on the other hand should totally come out of retirement for another movie if it happens.
