So I'm wondering what are the best boots for the money. I've been looking around at surplus stores but wasn't wanting to jump the neutrino wand.

You should check out eBay. There are quite a few threads on here about the boots and what is screen accurate. I was able to score a pair of vintage boots, that were my size for less then $100. And the best part is they are pre-broken in. We don't wear the boots enough to break them in usually, so a parade and after party, no problem. My feet don't care, its heaven.
