I'm starting to update my Ghostbuster uniform and it's come to a point to make keyfobs. For those of you who like making your own gear, I wanted to share my plans. I have approval from everyone I normally go to for accuracy approval.

They are drawn at 1:1 scale and can/should be printed out from the pdf file located here if you plan to use them as a pattern.

Here's a picture of the plan,

Unfortunately, I dont have any super clear details on the actual metal bits, so any one that chimes in with that information would be appreciated from everyone wanting to use these plans. Granted, they're probably not that hard to figure out, but any information would be nice.

But remember, this is the preferred way to print if you want to use this as a pattern, it is 1:1 scale ready to be cut out and cut out from your choice of leather/pleather.

How much $$$ would you guess this plan for keyfobs would save a person? BTW, thanks for posting this; it'll help after I get my new belt.

jackdoud wrote:Truthfully? Not a whole hell of a lot. You can get cheap off-cuts of leather on ebay but you'll likely pay more for the metal parts if you're only getting one or two(if it's even possible) than someone who's doing a run of 30-40.
Not to mention buying tools to install the snaps, leather dye and sealer, etc. Great idea if you already have that stuff.

im sorry, i tend to assume people are self sufficient and have the tools, or are prepared to invest in tools that they would use for other projectsnot limited to belt fobs for a ghostbuster costume.

it can be done. my button tool was purchased at walmart, similar ones can be purchased at micheals or other craft stores. the same for riveting tools, waxed thread, and leather needles. all relatively inexpensive and easy to work with.

also the same locations you can purchase your snap buttons and rings, and dye if you do not use black leather.

my main concern were the hooks.

I might attempt to make them, there's a shed full of "stuff" here at my house; a ton of tools that my grandfather has collected over the years, maybe on my next day off (If I get one) I'll check around; wouldn't be surprised if I found everything I need to make a few Fobs.

The main key fob has the following hardware:

3/4" squared D-ring: http://www.strapworks.com/Metal_D_Ring_p/mdrsq.htm
3/4" swivel lobster clip
1" split O-ring
1/2" snap

The other fob only has a lobster clip and snap (however, a 1" key ring can be worn with this, as seen on Venkman in the early press photos and Egon during the NYC shooting). Another interesting note about this second fob is that it curves outward at the bottom (where the snap is) and is not dyed on the inside, as compared to the main fob, which is straight and fully dyed.

Hope that helps!

Tonight was a neat night in the chat, we were talking about belt fobs and then Demon Vice Commander popped in with a ton of useful information.

Infact he showed that these are what the exact type of clasp is used

You can find them on ebay from time to time, you're looking for a 2 1/2" in length with a 3/4" slot.

Specifically called: 3/4" swivel lobster clips for you googlers, or, HEAVY DUTY SWIVEL SNAP BOLT HOOKS NICKEL FINISH (probably the one id go with. probably a hint.)

Here's what I found, before the accurate one was shared. The only issue with this is, the corners are round, when they're supposed to be squared. I sent for a quote, just for curiosity and because that was when I WANTED THEM NOW, we'll see about price when I hear back. if i hear back.

The D-ring
http://www.strapworks.com/Metal_D_Ring_p/mdrsq.htm
I needed 4, because I'm making two of every fob, set me back $4.16. You can get some at JOANNS for 2.29, like I did earlier today, but the only ones I saw were rounded edges and not like the squared edges no the real ones.

The Buttons

Purchased at Walmart for less than 4 dollars and it came with a tool to assemble them - this is called an investment thing. Keep that tool. I have 2 because I keep buying more buttons and its cheaper to just get that, than drive all over town to get just the buttons.

The Ring

I bought a baggie of 32mm key rings at JOANN fabric, they were 1.29 for 4. Honestly, I'm not having much luck finding a solid ring with a split in it. It wont be a difficult thing to change when you have it assembled though.

There we go.
