I've produced a video on how I made my own stubby antenna using a bolt, some clear tubing, an end cap and some shrink wrap tubing. I posted this in my other MT500 thread but I thought I'd crosspost here in case its helpful for people looking for DIY information. In total it was less than a fiver worth of materials.
