SWEET! i was hoping someone there would get detail shots of the place...
I had a considerable shopping list borzou opted to try fill... he probably regretted making the offer, in hindsight.

From another forum I post on....
I got to see that in person a few months ago. A friend was working on a porn shoot there (behind the scenes, not...you know...) When I picked her up one day she offhandedly remarked that someone mentioned the set was in Ghostbusters (She wasn't very familiar with the film).

Me: Wait...you mean that's THE firehouse from Ghostbusters?
Her: I guess. Was there a scene in the movie with a firehouse?
Me: Uh, yea, kinda!

I'd concluded it to be a set as well. It (and the adjoining Lab) feature window, tile and colour scheme designs based on the Second Floor Crew Quarters, but a layout that isn't present.

Plus, it seems pretty big for a room that appears to be a converted bathroom.
I've never been to LA23, and haven't even had a chance to watch the five tour videos yet, but when I was updating my Filming Locations pages a few months ago, I determined it to be a set built in a corner of the 2nd floor crew quarters. You know, the white-tiled room where the guys eat, play arcade games, have their lab, etc.

The window and the white-tiled wall below it are my points of comparison. The door Winston breaks down, the wall that door is attached to, the toilet, the toilet paper holder, the shelves... ALL FAKE!

Of course, I could be wrong...but I have a feeling that I'm not.

I get a small but of glee knowing that they set a fire IN a firehouse :-)

The area inside the red rectangle is where they built the bathroom set.

You may be right! I'm going to try and confirm this comparing the videos and photos.

*EDIT*

I couldn't find a detailed photo of that window to compare with the scene where the vigo photos burn in flames but I was able to find another scene in GBII where that window briefly appears - the dancing toaster scene, although only the left side of the window can been seen.

By comparing between these two it doesn't seem to be the same window/location...

The wood details in the toaster scene don't seem to match the wood details of the photos scene. The white rim on top of the white tiles is segmented in the toaster scene but it is one continuous piece in the photos scene. Finally, the window itself is white in the toaster scene while it is all brown in the photos scene. These 3 alltogether point to this being a different location. The mistery remains...

I agree with spook. In the film you can see the tiles of the wall with the "door" don't match up with the tiles below the window, and the whole wall shakes when Winston breaks down the door. Definitely a fake room set up on that floor.

Well, it's possible that I was wrong.

PortugueseGB is right. That window has a white frame in the toaster scene (the one on the right, half out of frame):

While the window in the photo lab scene has a brown frame:

Boomerjinks is right that, if you look carefully, the tiles don't line up at the corner - but that's actually true for both side walls. In the above image and the one immediately below, you see that the tiles on the side walls line up slightly higher than the back wall. But I don't know if that's anything to go by, because it could just be a trick of the camera lens since it's so slight.
Image
In this shot we get our best look at the area right outside the door. There does appear to be a brown window frame right behind Winston's head, which would be to the immediate left of the packs on the metal shelves. However, it appears that there's other stuff to the left of that window. The location photo in my original message (and the toaster scene photo above) show that the other window is right up against a small part of wall. So there wouldn't be room for other stuff to be placed to the left of it.

Oy, this is getting really confusing. For the time being I'll leave the photo lab pic on my page for the firehouse, until someone can find definitive proof of it being filmed elsewhere.

After spending over an hour watching the videos and looking at all the posts I have a lot to say, lol. First off, you guys are the luckiest bunch of GB's on the planet. Second: Amazing job with the video work. I have never seen such meticulous documentation of something as massive as that firehouse. Thirdly: I thank you guys for taking the videos and the pictures, we really need to get info about the firehouse out to the masses. I don't know about it being a community center, though I'd certainly go there to edit movies :) However, something definitely needs to be done to preserve and protect the awesome historic landmark that is Fire Station 23. Thanks again and amazing job gentlemen! :crunch:

P.S.
I had lots of stuff planned for tonight and this thread completely threw off my schedule :P

I'm trying to figure out where the poles were. The only one I cant seem to place is the first one on the left (if you're looking in from the outside) The only place that would make sense would be the Captains quarters on the second floor. But as I understand it, that room already has two poles (one leading from the 3rd floor to the 2nd, and the pole next to the fireplace) Did anyone notice if there was another pole in this room, or know where on the 2nd floor this pole was?
#249520
Spokcentral It would make sense that the frames would be dark for two reasons:
1) There is a red light in there to give the illusion of a real photo room
2) They would have attached something to the windows so light does not get through and ruin the pictures.

After asking my father about window coverings for dark rooms (he used to dabble in photography as a hobby) and he says that coverings for window used to be sold as well as frames you would attach to windows. I would believe the frame variety is what we see here.

To answer your question Venkman, the first pole on the left went from the crew member's lounge on the second floor. There are no poles going for the Chief's quarters to the arcade, however the pole farthest back (the pole closest to Venkman's offce area) comes from right outside the Captain's quarters (the windowed room on the second floor).
#249601
There's only one pole in the Captain's Quarters (which were on the third floor) and only ran down to the second floor (into the Crew Lounge/Den), the other five connect the second floor to the first. If I understand what you mean by "the first one on the left", that particular one was accessed via the Crew Quarters, and was the one nearest the arcade machines. The firepole near the Fireplace in the Crew Den is the one that descended near the Alarm Box, where the bell would be found.

As for the Dark Room window, Paul meant that the window pane frames are the exact same colour as the outer frame, whereas they would be white if they'd used the real Crew Quarters... doubtful the wood would be the same colour because of some sort of Dark Room cover being put on them... I also doubt the production would go to that effort.

There is more information to be seen after Winston smashes the door open, and you can see whats outside of the room.

I think if you look, you will see the room has the same shape. There appears to be the same chair rail of tile work visible that indicates that there is a wall there the same way there is in the unmodified firehouse. The white thing.. I don't know what it is. But it appears to just be something covering up the heater unit.

Thanks Ben. I just saw one of the maps you made and that answers all my questions. I cant believe anyone would put a pole right in a doorway (2nd floor, main assembly area) That seems to be the worst place for one, but I guess if it worked for the firefighters it must have been a good idea.

I don't want to sound crass here, but let's make sure we're all using the same terminology. The Chief's quarters is the 3rd floor, the Captain's quarters is on the second floor which you can see at 2:46 in part 3. The pole that is in the crew member's den (or lounge as I said my previous post, which is at 4:00 in part 3) isn't close to the alarm. You can see the hole for the pole at 3:21 in part 2 of the videos. The pole that's next to the arcade machines is the one next to the alarm box. As for the the pole next to the doors, since there were two doors to the common area as you can at 6:18 in part 3, one could be kept closed for safety purposes as that's the captain's pole.
