While I love the proton and trap effects, I'm not feeling the love for the smoke.

It looks like you are using eyecandy's smoke filter.. try playing with a few settings, and even layering a few smoke effects together. Also I think you need more opacity in the smoke, with more of a fade at the top. Sometimes less is more.

Here's a quick test I did, to see how I could manage with it.
