And never mind that he was used before. Star Wars films have reused plots from books, comics and video games. Hell within the first 3 films there was a Death Star twice. The Marvel films are almost always based on specific comic story arcs published 20+ years ago.
Including what was done in GB:TVG there's potential for:
A large cult based on the Gozer worshipers
Shandor leaving behind more portals to the other dimensions
Ivo being just 1 in a long line of evil Shandors
A ghost haunting the Shandor family for generations
Ivo's unnecessary surgeries: either creating monsters from people or leaving magic items within people.
Or perhaps not a blood tie but they could be on a Shandor property. Perhaps his birthplace.
GB1 mentioned Shandor having 1,000 followers At least a handful would have been alive still and it's possible the numbers had grown. He's an architect and he only ever built one building with the supernatural alloy? Unlikely. GB1 hardly closed the case on Gozer or Shandor. The Ghostbusters used all of their power to close the door. They didn't even destroy Gozer. The demi-god is alive and well. GB1 is great but it's fraught with loose ends. What the GB accomplished in GB1 was essentially destroying a Gozer temple. The ONLY Gozer temple? Nope. She's been worshipped for millennia and that temple was hardly the first and unlikely the only one especially with Shandor's knack for supernatural building.
Do I think that's what the story will be? I'm iffy on it but since the cap on a trilogy is usually for tying up loose ends it would make a lot of sense to bring in history from GB1 and GB2 much like GB: TVG did.
