Winston is a descendant and reincarnation of Shima-Buku, chieftain of the ancient Ibandi empire located in the present day African nation of Tangalla. He also held an heirloom that turned out to be the key that released The Collector from his ten-thousand year imprisonment.
Winston is the most physically able of the Ghostbusters; he played basketball as a kid and is a big fan of a loser baseball team, the Jersey Jaguars--and once played baseball for Peter's soul. Thankfully, his team won. Winston is also the best shot with his proton pack.
Winston is often the driver of the ECTO-1, and he and Ray do most of the work keeping it running.
Winston hones his mind with mystery stories, such as Sherlock Holmes and the stories of the late Agatha Grisly. He has the most common sense of the Ghostbusters by far, and is the one to pull them back to reality when they get lost in science.
Winston has a girlfriend, a museum curator, whom he has dated for a number of years; for the most part, he's managed to keep her completely uninvolved with Ghostbuster cases (save one incident in the Now Comics series) |

When we see Winston in "Back In the Saddle", we find out that when the Ghostbusters went out of business, Winston moves to Montana, near his sister, and became a commuter pilot.
