- The title of this episode and elements of the story come from a novel, Hell House which was later made into a movie, The Legend of Hell House.
- Peter's line of "I've come here to chew bubblegum and kick ectoplasm, and I'm all out of bubblegum." is a reference to the movie They Live where Roddy Piper's character says a similar line.
- Several references to the first Ghostbusters movie are made, including Columbia University, Gozer and the Ghostbusters' encounter at the New York Public Library. Also mention of the Ghostbusters movie that was made in the episode, Take Two..
