Discuss the Ghostbusters movie that was released in 2016.

I fully admit that I get too comfortable in my fandoms and have a really hard time accepting change. I have no qualms admitting that. I'm 36 years old and I like my fandoms the way they are and left alone. I'm sure that I'm not the only Ghosthead who's also a who fan of Doctor that's gun shy about what could happen. The reboot didn't set the box office on fire, pitted fans against one another and nearly derailed the franchise. I feel in our franchise that the saving grace was how strong and beloved the original (s) were to the general public hence the huge output of classic related merchandising that's sprung up in the past 9-10 months. Doctor Who, while a popular show doesn't have the same sort of resonance with the general public so it will have a tougher time keeping it's audience. If the trend of declining ratings continues then the show gets cancelled. So to me, I'm torn. I want the show to continue but at the same time I'm not interested in what's being presented. It sucks.

The REAL question is, will the new Dr. Who episodes have a terrible fart joke in it within the first 20 minutes?
Doctor Who doesn't really do fart jokes that much thankfully but yes I still have bad memories when they have done those jokes.
Except they're less likely to consider your point of view if the way you phrase it/go about it only turns them off.
To be fair I have never been the best person when it comes to clarifying myself first time.
Good for them? Though maybe that might say more about you than him/her or me.
Actually it's almost like Simon does double duties. It's quite funny actually. I guess you should see that as a compliment since he works every hard for the site.
I'm glad it was free of your usual rhetoric. Are you opposed to her because she isn't a good enough actress, or because of your views on social progressiveness of women in the media?
You don't really want me to go into details about that do you? I have over explained myself on DoG but due to the mainly left wing leaning people on there aren't taking in what I say. Some of my reasoning is in the quote I posted in my previous post.
Moffat's one feminist, and one kind of feminist. They aren't all identical.
If he's like Christina Hoff Summers we're okay. If he's another Joss Whedon like Moffat is we have a problem.
So? That doesn't mean he has an actual hatred for me - you're grasping at straws on this point.
A creature that targets men? Yeeaa, suspiciously dodgy.
I think you're overinvesting in your fear without any rational basis. It's all assumptions predetermined on this cartoonish caricature of feminists built up using examples of a handful of very extreme individuals.
Well we've seen what Moffat has done as a feminist and we've seen other examples of shows taking the feminist route so I don't feel I'm overreacting in the slightest here.
Fortunately for the most part it seems things have quietened down. Unfortunately it does just seem that some folks aren't happy that the Doctor is now going to be a woman, even though I think it's great as it gives women and girls another hero to add to their pantheon.
People are quieting down because people like myself who have objected have been shut down by the left wing fans. In fact my own parents have requested for me to not talk about this on social media and just agree with everybody about it. I am not making this up folks. They know I'm correct but because of the forced diversity today people with opposing views are being pounced on by the pro-female Doctor fans. Only one view is allowed and my parents feel I could get into a lot of trouble with the wacked out majority. There's your left wing dictatorship mate!
There are different types of comedy. Spies Like Us has a fart joke, and it's hilarious because of how it's worked into the moment and how the characters react. Does the first Ghostbusters have humor like that? No, and that's fine, that's a different type of humor.
You need a good balance otherwise the film just becomes a complete juvenile mess.
Most people are just thinking, "OK, there's been 12 men, now there's the first woman. Neat, what's the big deal?"
The big deal is that the decision was made by two feminists, both who decided to hire a feminist and the decision was made at a point in time where the left wing are taking over creatively, most of the time for their own selfish gain.
If the trend of declining ratings continues then the show gets cancelled. So to me, I'm torn. I want the show to continue but at the same time I'm not interested in what's being presented. It sucks.
I mentioned this elsewhere. I kind of feel the ratings for the first year at least will be terrific but will plummet once the whole female Doctor gimmick grows tiresome.
I guess I'm already over "finally girls have someone to look up to" excuse that's used to justify every instance of a well established character getting gender flipped. I'm all for strong female characters, Ripley, Buffy, Janeway, but 2 things: 1. There's a bit of hypocrisy here because if well established female characters were gender swapped, there would be so many people triggered by it and 2. When does it end? When all established male characters are female? The perception of the Doctor Who fandom has now shifted to a sense that Whovians were just ironically being fanatic about the series, cosplaying as the Doctors, gobbling up all the merchandise, while all the same time deep down pining for the Doctor to be a woman? Doesn't make alot of sense. Whovians had no issue with how the Doctor was portrayed until this gender flip and then suddenly its made the show more watchable and if you don't like it you're sexist and need to leave the fandom? It just hits too close to home after the past year is probably why I'm more sensitive to it, I dunno.
Really good points, I totally agree. Ironic that the left wing who consider themselves the most open minded and flexible have been the most ruthless in bullying people. I don't think they deserve a female Doctor if that's what happens when they get what they want.

Probably not if we're honest, I guess I was just hoping there may have been an objection that wasn't on some sort of anti-liberal basis. They probably are registering what you're saying, they just don't agree with your sentiment.
A creature that targets men? Yeeaa, suspiciously dodgy.
There's nothing suspiciously dodgy, female creatures that lure men to their deaths has been a staple of mythology for centuries, you're projecting some sort of man-hating liberal agenda onto what is a science fiction version of a siren.
There's your left wing dictatorship mate!
Okay, pferreira1983, I think we've gotten the point. Please keep your remarks about "left wing dictatorship" to yourself because there are far more accurate examples of dictatorships out there than not being allowed to voice an unpopular opinion.

I'm sure Jodie will make the character her own and it eventually won't matter whether she's the first female Doctor or not, if she's a strong enough Doctor in her own right then she'll help carry the show. Besides, failing ratings of the past few years haven't been the result of who was portraying the Doctor, but who was writing the show.
Ironic that the left wing who consider themselves the most open minded and flexible have been the most ruthless in bullying people.
After the weekend in Charlottesville in Virginia, there is no doubt that the most ruthless bullies are the fascist far-right.

My views on the subject were anti-liberal but not for the sake of it, more than it was getting in the way of creativity as I sort of mention in that quote. I really don't think what I said did register, most of the comments after I explained myself were "you're sexist Pedro!", "the world's problems are because of white males like you!" and "you don't want a female Doctor because she has a vaaaggginnnaa!" So yeah intelligent and unbiased reasoning is kind of difficult there sometimes.

Nah it was all feminist rubbish dictated by Russell T Davies. Chibnall went along with that because that's where his politics lie and surprise surprise it's one of the worst episodes of a not very good show.
Please keep your remarks about "left wing dictatorship" to yourself because there are far more accurate examples of dictatorships out there than not being allowed to voice an unpopular opinion.
But you can imagine my frustration when you say it has died down. There is a reason for that, i.e. anyone who has a difference of opinion has received abuse online as Peter Davison recently discovered so we either leave social media and the Internet or shut up about it. Now doesn't that sound like I dictatorship?
Besides, failing ratings of the past few years haven't been the result of who was portraying the Doctor, but who was writing the show.
I feel that's partly because people are still obsessed with having David Tennant back as the Doctor and also because Moffat is going out of his way to create overly complex storylines that never quite make sense instead of just writing good storylines. We've gone from one extreme (RTD) to another (Moffat).
After the weekend in Charlottesville in Virginia, there is no doubt that the most ruthless bullies are the fascist far-right.
You need not worry, the left wing control the media as well as jobs.

Did someone here actually downvote a post that contained criticsm about the Charlottesville Nazi rally? Are you effing serious?

The facist far right are just compensating for how tiny their...."hands" are. Yes that's right. They have extremely small, pathetic.. "hands". I'm sure the first time each and everyone of those protestors took off their "gloves" their girlfriends laughed and laughed at the size of their itty bitty "hands".

I did not because of that but because of the other stuff in Kingpin's post. By the way please learn to edit your posts. We're getting long ass posts here because you've just hit reply without doing some editing. Don't worry I gave you a dislike as well so you don't feel left out.
What does that have to do with the riot in Virginia?
It means the media has very left wing person's back so these rest assured anyone who isn't left wing won't have a voice.

Not sure mate but look at the topic title. You're the one creating a topic that was the intention of causing heated debate. You were looking for trouble with that one and found it.

Can someone please ban this guy. Enough is enough. He's clearly a troll just trying to get attention and a reaction out of people. Kingpin? I know I can just put him on my ignore list but this is getting ridiculous

Oh no worries about that. If you are around here for much longer, I'm out. Life is too short to deal with people like you. It'd be one thing if you were just someone out to make a point. But nope. You're a straight up troll. You constantly derail threads, are consistently wrong, patronizing and spread this anti left garbage that has zero to do with Ghostbusters. And you constantly winking and downvoting is creepy. Just a heads up

You seem to be acting more the troll than me. If you feel I'm making fun of you it's because it's difficult trying to take you seriously when you're getting wound up on something so pedantic. That's how people like you work. I've seen the same over at Trekcore. Doesn't matter how much I try to explain myself they want to be proven right and want to misinterpret what I say because it makes them feel better somehow. I never constantly derail threads, I never spout 'anti-left garbage' as you say and I see how if I have a different opinion that can be considered wrong. With Kingpin it's the same. I'm not the clearest person in the world but the fact you're going crazy about this shows how right you want to be all the time.

You somehow misinterpreted the post I made about Spider-Man 3.1 and then added to your frustration when I failed to agree with your understanding. You could just ask me to clarify myself right? But nope, too proud. I understand now you don't like to be challenged but that's not a good persona to carry around with you. That's my heads up, no winking this time, this is my honest advice to you.

Joss Whedon has produced/directed some excellent shows with very interesting characters. (Buffy, Angel, Firefly)

I recall watching Buffy and at the same time Star Trek Voyager. With Voyager the writing was bland and there was always the typical Star Trek ending. I rarely if ever felt like any of the lead characters were in any danger no matter what the situation was.

With Buffy things were never black and white and people who were supposed to be the heros would sometime be the bad guy/girl. Even into the 7th season I never felt that any of the lead characters were safe from meeting a grisly death.

Joss doesn't do happy endings. In the movie Serenity you actually feared that no-one would come out of the final battle alive. Firefly. The series that Fox didn't understand and did everything in it's powers to kill it. Cancelling it after half a season. Even though there was only half a season the fandom grew and grew. Eventually the fans would get a movie Serenity. Although it didn't do well at the boxoffice (the trailers did a poor job promoting the movie) Although to be honest it was not easy trying to describe the movie.

What did the fans do next? Around the world they started to hold screenings of the movie to raise money for the charity "Equality Now". This was Joss Whedon's charity of choice. In my home town (Toronto, Ontario) we held screenings of the movie in a theater for 10 years. Even though the movie was out on DVD and Blue Ray we would still get people who had just got into the fandom and had never seen the movie on the big screen. (We could tell because they would jump at certain points of the movie )

This was not the studio doing this. It was the fans that were renting the theater, ordering the movie, promoting the event, selling tickets, holding auctions, shindigs etc.

The world could use a lot more people like Joss Whedon
Why?

No worries. It was mainly Buffy and Star Wars that started me into going to Sci-Fi conventions and eventually volunteering to help run them.

I have met some great people who have become close friends so a lot of the Joss Whedon shows have a soft spot for me.

Sorry, man...I just don't see it. I liked his short run on Astonishing X-Men, but that's about it.
At least I will forever be grateful to him for delivering Sarah Michelle Gellar and Charisma Carpenter to my formative teenage years. Ah, the days before internet porn at your fingertips...

Speaking of Joss Whedon, I'm going to have to side with some of you guys regarding the...confused state of feminism right now. Apparently his ex wife (yeah, no ulterior motives here ;) ) wrote an essay detailing their marriage's dirty laundry. As a result, a 15 year old Whedon fansite has apparently been shut down and "fans" on Tumblr (with a couple of exceptions, thankfully) are burning him at the stake. Apparently because he's a flawed human being, he must have been "faking" his feminism all this time. I'm going to assume most of these "fans" are very young. But it's awful to hear them talking about "canceling" a person they deem not worthy of their high standards. I'm reminded of a quote from Inherit the Wind:
“Youth can be so pure. What do you know of good or evil? What do you understand of the sum of a man’s life?….You see my husband as a saint, and so he must be right in everything he says and does. And then you see him as a devil, and everything he says and does must be wrong. Well, my husband’s neither a saint nor a devil. He’s just a human being…and he makes mistakes.”–Inherit the Wind (1960)

It is unfortunate news and a bit sad that some have so easily turned on him. As far as I know it is only one site that has posted her story. Joss has said that he will not respond to her article to spare his children.

So I guess it will be some time before we will get his side of the story.

Read an article on this. If he'd been having affair's over the last fifteen years why the hell would his wife stay with him that long?

Yeah, if all this is true and I have a hard time taking anything from the Washington Compost at face value, this was a pretty sleasy thing for Joss to have done. As for his wife's claims of PTSD I am calling bullshit on that one.

I find it odd that she would be airing out their dirty laundry in such a public matter like this. I don't feel sorry for either one of them.

Seriously. This is just disgusting. This is a personal matter between two adults and has nothing to do with feminism or really anything of any sort. I didn't know being a faithful husband and feminism were mutually exclusive. And the ex wife writing this story just reeks of ulterior motives. Why wait until now? She's clearly trying to hurt his career. I'm sure she's hurt emotionally(keep in mind this is also one side of what I'm sure is a complicated story) but making this public like she did is just...wrong. Think of your kids! This isn't anyone's business and shame on her for trying to sling mud like this

Well why did either of them stay married? People are weird, no point in trying to understand, I say.

Yup, that's why I assume most of the complaining feminists are very young and don't necessarily understand the nuances of adulting (not that all young people are that clueless). But you're right, adultery and feminism aren't really all that connected in themselves. If a gay man cheats on his partner, he's not anti gay rights, lol.
