hey i just read #5 (great series btw!) and i noticed that the proton packs in this issue look more like the movie ones than in the previous comics, and when venkman asks egon why the packs were lighter he said, the cooling covers gave a cancer risk. what exactly were the cooling covers?

Dan just asked for a quick gag to acknowledge that the packs weren't as streamlined as they were in the first arc. (:

I loved the cooling cover bit! I typically read word bubbles first, and then enjoy the panel's artwork, and I completely failed to notice the change until reading Venkman's question to Egon about the packs weight. Totally got me by surprise, and I cracked a huge smile at the familiar silhouette of the movie pack. I had no problem with the RGB-esque interpretation of the pack featuring the cooling covers, but I do hope the movie packs are here to stay...it is SO awesome to see them drawn by someone who clearly knows the details of them!

They're the numbers of the chartered jet that flew them to Hollywood, so there's no secret meaning to them.

Well it's just as well they finally got rid of those juvenile looking pack's i've personally never liked em' if they can finally make the pack's look like how it did in the infestation series that would be great giving it a more mature feel and maybe in the upcoming issues change the artwork to look more like the one's in infestation that would be awesome too but i guess the artwork currently right now is okay and i also agree with dr. speng's i could also go for the slime blower's in upcoming issues as well

Question: If the series takes place after the videogame, why are all the awesome advances in equipment suddenly gone? Instead of an all in one pack, there's now a Boson Dart Pack, and it sounds like the Slime Blower might pop up again. It just seems like a big step backwward to go from being able to have an all in one pack that would allow you to not have to run back and forth to the car if you suddenly realize that Dark Matter or Slime would be really nifty in a certain situation. And visually, there's no difference btween the classic pack and the game one, save for the barrel attachment/box on the gun, and the slime canister along with a couple extra wires on the pack, and that's not even taking into account artistic interpretation. Not to mention other little things like the Ray using the XGB giant trap toy that came with the Kylie figure as opposed to the already established Super Slammer.

I can certainly appreciate the gags and in-jokes, and I'm not complaining in the least. I was just genuinely curious as to why, in a book that looks to be pushing the storylines forward from the game and GB2 (FINALLY! I've been hoping for that for A LONG TIME. The first storyline was great, I'll give that to you, but I LONG for the day I can get through an entire GB story without hearing Gozer or Stay Puft mentioned...) by introducing new characters and plots and scenarios, would then go in the opposite direction concerning the gear?

Just a question that was bugging me. In all honesty, this is a great book, and I can't wait to see what happens next.
Thanks!

It confused me a little at first too, but IDW has indicated that not every little element of the Video Game is part of their continuity. They make it clear Winston doesn't have a PhD like he did in GBVG, as another example. And Slimer only gets put into his fishtank for the first time in #2.

And frankly, I think it makes a lot of sense to keep some of that stuff at arm's length--it's one thing to get constant power-ups in a video game, it's another deal when you're talking about stuff the Ghostbusters just aren't going to need very often in-story. Remember that like 99% of their jobs are simple "zap and trap" where the same tech they made in the mid 80's is proven to work just fine. The stuff exciting enough to get into the comics is the 1% where something outside the ordinary happens.

The Super Slammer and the new Proton Packs were both experimental prototypes as stated in the game. In Issue #3, Peter inquired about the latter. Egon indicated the experimental Proton Pack shorted out in Las Vegas. The same can be assumed for the Super Slammer. It already broke down once during The Video Game. It is implied that both were very useful so Egon and Ray still continued to try and devise more stable, refined versions of these prototypes hence, the Refined Prototype Pack and Megatrap were ready for use by the time of the events of the first story arc.

Super slammer still exists. I'm using it in Who Killed Laura Parr, and I definitely designed it to be a part of the comics Ecto-2/RV.

I actually removed a bit of dialogue from Who Killed that explained that the all-in-one packs were too dangerous to use, and I think Erik pretty much said it WITHOUT saying it when he put the Boson Pack in there. It makes sense. Christ knows I wouldn't want to carry that thing around.
