Hello!

I'm running the Ghostbusters LARP at Gen Con this year called "Who You Gonna Call? Eco-Friendly Ghost Traps!" (event code: LRP1342507), on Saturday the 17th of August from noon to 5:00.

The official description is: "Ghostbusters International, NYC branch, is demonstrating a greener ghost trap: Mythos, madness, and intrigue to follow the cocktail hour."

As of today, there's about 23 spots left, and the event is being co-run by Elder Entertainment, a premier Cthulhu LARP group at Gen Con. It is set in modern times, uses a character sheet that is very open-ended and customizable, and every character has a secret...

The event should be quite fun, with a lot of secrets, machinations, plotting, and a good dose of Lovecraftian horror set against a conference of franchise branches.

If you're going to be at Gen Con this year, and have the time, consider getting an event ticket for it.

*EDIT: I had quoted 12 spots left, when I meant 23. (35 maximum available spots minus 23 currently available spots equals a blunder on my mathematical skills...)

I've set up a Twitter handle to talk about the LARP in small doses: @GhostbusterLARP (imaginative, huh?)

Interestingly, I've been thinking about the Lovecraftian flavor of the the movies, since Mythos is going to play a significant (or potentially could play a significant) part of LARP. Replace Zuul with Nyarlathotep, and Gozer with Azathoth, or Or Ivo Shandor with Wilbur Whateley, and Gozer with Yog-Sothoth...*

*Sorry if this has already been discussed before- I'm very new to this board.

Some time next month, I'll need to construct some ghost traps, and maybe a proton pack. My plan is to make it modularly, and in a way that I can flatten it, so it can fit in my suit case. Detail isn't the key part, so it's not going to look nearly as cool as some amazing fan-made props I've seen at Gen Con in the previous years, but hopefully it'll be a step up from your average LARP.

I was thinking of using stratocore (corrugated plastic), duct tapes, and knick-knacks found at Ax-Man (http://ax-man.com). Any suggestions/alternatives?

I've been working on props for the LARP. The key for these ghost traps were to make them so they could be flattened into a suitcase, but be substantial enough when put back together.

Image
Here is the trap flattened. It can fit in the bottom of a non-checked suitcase (though given the LARP stuff I'm bringing, I'll probably be checking my bag).

Image
This is a view of the bottom. It has a strip of industrial strength velcro, and the flap fits into the bottom.

Image
And here it is assembled. It doesn't have pneumatics or knobs on the side (mostly cause I don't want TSA to have any doubts that it's not a weapon or something sinister). I think, for the purposes of the LARP, it'll do quite nicely.

I will grab a bunch if I can remember, I usually am stopped so often for pictures that I forget to get any myself! This should be a lot of fun though. I will write up a bit of a report and post some pics in the weeks following as long as I take some notes and pics along the way!

<Devious laughter>

Being your first GenCon, yeah, probably wise to not commit to much beforehand. It's a big convention with lots going on--I pretty much spent the first time I went in a daze taking it all in. Good grief, I even got lost at one point

I played in the LARP at GenCon and it was a ton of fun. I took a few pics but could not really take many so that I could stay "in character".

Having never done this before I have to say that it was such a good time I would sign up for a round two...

Great job SRobbins! You put on a hell of a show!

Now, has anyone seen Tully?... TULLY!!!!!!!!

Everyone!

I'm so sorry I haven't posted anything about how the game went! I've been wrapped up with a Kickstarter project (103% successful, just this morning when it ended!), that I let myself breech protocol.

Unfortunately, I didn't take any photos of the game IN progress, since I was running it, and had to stay on top of everything. But I'll post something how it ended. It's HUGE SPOILER of how the scenario ends, so I want to give some heads up.

How did it go? Beautifully! We had just the minimum number of PCs to run the event. Several first-timers, too. Every single PC got into it, and really made the characters their own (which wasn't hard, since the character sheets were left deliberately vauge for personalization), and took off like a lightening bug. We had two conference rooms, as well as a stairwell, which allowed for the PCs to do their back-handed maneuvering. Here's a few pics...

The guy on the left has a secret identity. Here he trying to ply to the NYC branch manager for secrets...

Image

This is the scene before all hell broke loose! Really, the only group shot I got...

Image

In this scenario, there's an organization that has philosophical opposition to Ghostbusters. GLOOM. Think Earth Liberation Front mixed with PETA.

Image

And why not throw in a competitor? 5 points to whoever gets the (not so) subtle visual pun...

Image

Why not have a Lovecraftian cult mixed with 4Chan?

Some filthy, disgusting, and titilating (not to mention vastly illegal) ghost pornography, published by PlayBoo.

I think I might post all the character sheets and related ephemera online, for those who'd want to take a crack at running this event themselves. I just need to make sure that the wonderful people at Elder Entertainment, who helped run this event, are cool with me doing so. I doubt they would mind, though...

All in all, it was a wonderful time, and everyone was so game!

Any chance on this happening? I'd love to run a Ghostbusting event sometime, but I'm a total noob when it comes to LARPing.
