Discuss the Ghostbusters movie that was released in 2016.

GB update Dan Aykroyd wants Jason Statham for 3rd film which is in my honest opinion a very big move
because lots of people love this guy his action transporter crank movies are hot i could soo picture statham
with proton pack doing some crazy shit that will in the end be funny as in both crank movies

the one problem people have with Jason Statham is that he doesn't speak very much or whispers in his movies which make him perfect for a godfather mob movie but as a ghostbuster could be very frightening but maybe thats what this generation needs
is a action star to give a furious kick to a classic franchise

i dont think any fan will pass up on a treat like Jason Statham as next ghostbuster
the originals were in their 40's for GB1 why not Statham

So the latest quote from Dan Akyroyd that's gonna get repeated again and again is that he wants Ghostbusters to be the new "Marvel Cinematic Universe," complete with spin-offs and stories for different ages.

Two reactions:
1. Making "Ghostbusters" into a global franchise with many different branches in different cities, populated by different characters all with their own distinct (but inter-connected) storylines taking place in the same universe? I can't believe nobody's thought of that. Oh wait...I think they did. The fans liked the idea so much they decided to make it happen for themselves. Sure, they don't have hundreds of millions of dollars to spend on props, sets, and special effects... but they've got editing software, cameras, costumes, After Effects, and passion, which is sometimes all you really need.

2. Add Dan Akyroyd to the list of people who'd like to emulate the success of Marvel's MCU, without really understanding why it works. His intentions, I believe, are the best in the world, but Marvel keeps the train on the tracks by basically letting one guy, Kevin Faige, run the MCU with very little interference from upper management. He picks the directors and writers, his is the final green light, and he oversees the production. Nobody goes over his head to give Joss Whedon plot notes about what has to be in the next Avengers film, nobody really objected when he hired James Gunn because of his youtube series, "PG Porn", or the Russo Brothers because of the "Community" paintball episodes. This is why they can do what they've done. They've made billions of dollars AND several excellent movies because they've taken this HUGE thing and kept it small and manageable, basically centered in one guy.

If they want a Ghostbusters cinematic universe, they'll need their Kevin Faige. Someone who cares deeply about the project, and who can work closely with the directors and writers, while keeping the studio heads from killing everything with notes. DC and Sony still haven't figured that out...

Right now everybody wants to be Marvel. I remember in the early 90s when everybody wanted to be Disney. Basically this is a golden age, and golden ages always last forever, right? I don't know what will end this particular renaissance, but it will end, and when it does everybody will go looking for whatever the next big thing is going to be...

For heaven's sake, what will it take to stop Dan talking before thinking? Just forever clouding the issue with half thoughts. The Paul Fieg idea is a really good, really fresh one. Stop confusing things, man!

At this point, rather than a Ghostbusters sequel or reboot, I would rather see a parody/tribute called Ghostsmashers (which I believe was Dan Aykroyd's original name) along with the original concept of space travel and whatnot. In addition, every living actor who has been associated with the rumored Ghostbusters 3 over the past couple of decades, including the original cast of GB, would make a cameo appearance in the film as a Ghostsmasher or some other character. I think this is a concept that ghostheads could appreciate without feeling like it's ruining the franchise we love.

Ok guys, think it is ready for a letter writing campaign to get this reboot turned back into a sequel. Rebooting with out Stanz or Venkman at least handing over the reigns is inexcusable. I mean are we really going to sit by quietly and let them try to spoon feed us slop when we are so close to the movie we have waited decades for. Come on guys don't let it turn out like Phantom Menace, TMNT (f*** you Michael Bay you alien obsessed bastard), and Crystal Skull?

Ok. So I have done my fair share of bitching about this information via here and social media. But I have sat back and realized that's its out of our hands. I know like me we all want ghostbusters to be what we grew up with. Most of us want to see the original characters back but in reality it isn't ever gonna happen. No I don't like the new idea but what ever is gonna become of ghostbusters will always be left up to us fans. New movies may come and go but the real spirit of ghostbusters will always live on in us true fans.

Yes. This re-boot is destined for failure. I for one wanted a sequel to continue the story of the original GBs, Dana, Oscar, etc.

At this point I'm just going to get on board with an all-female reboot. What's the worst that could happen? It could suck? If it does, I'll forget about it and pretend it doesn't exist and watch my GB blu-ray some more. And to a lesser extent GB2, which kind of sucked too, at least in comparison with the original.

I'm not as big a Gillian Anderson fan as some are...I'm sort of neutral on her...but she does sound like an intriguing choice as one of the new female GBs.

I for one will wait and see. How many times has this thing been looking good for a 3rd attempt to get off the ground and then.....
In like a lion and out like a lamb. WA WA WA!

Heck, just bring back The Real Ghostbusters and I would be happy as all heck. Dan and Ernie does voice work now he could even cameo the pilot, doubt they could afford him for more than that. Better still have both of them film an introduction to it, kinda a love letter for the fans sorta thing.

Just an idea.

The Daily Beast at some information in regards to the Sony Leak including an E-Mail sent from Amy Pascal (Head of Sony Pictures) to Ivan Reitman about the new GB movie. Looks like Summer 2016 with some big names. Pretty interesting as she mentions coming up with a clever way to connect the new film to the previous ones.

We see it as a movie that scares the shit out of you like great horror can, makes you laugh your ass off, has real action, real romance. real movie stars. Everything that you want in a blockbuster. Oceans 11 in the paranormal universe. i think this is the biggest franchise in hollywood just waiting to be tapped. and we make it smart and relevant-- dealing with the paranormal forces that we are all tuning out, the battle between dark & light going on all around us, and the crazy few people that come together to fight the good fight. I could go on but I'll stop. started mapping out some ideas already.

sept 7th: Paul Feig to Amy.... (GBFans op note: I cannot believe the extent to which Paul Feig is oblivious to what made GB an all time iconic movie. Your mouth just falls further and further open in disgust as you realize this man's total incompetence of steering any franchise, let alone a goldmine).

Amy,
Here’s my take on it: It’s a reboot of the franchise in a world (our world) that has never actually had any legitimate contact with the ghost world. Our villain ghost is an executed murderer, a Ted Kazinski type (think Peter Dinklage) who has left behind a manifesto of how he wants to change and destroy the world. When his execution is hit by a supercharged electrical storm, he is turned into a powerful ghost able to rouse other villainous spirits from the ghost world to carry out the ever-expanding plans of his manifesto. Our four new female Ghostbusters come together in an origin story that sees them forming a team based on their diverse skills and plays with the invention and trial-and-error of their various Ghostbusting technology and techniques as they try to stop the villain and his ever growing force of evil ghosts, which is a boring way of saying that we’ll see four very different women come together and figure out in funny, scary and action-packed ways how to save New York City and the world.

This first film will deal with this one mission and the formation of our team and the evolution of their hardware and by the end result in them forming their actual Ghostbusters business, versus starting a business mid-film like the original movie. However, I would like to keep their business as a secret government agency in a world where the government has worked hard to cover up the events of this first reboot in order to keep the public from knowing that there is now a possible reoccurring ghost threat over our country. (I’m playing with the idea that, a la Close Encounters, the government stages an evacuation of mid-town Manhattan to keep the public from knowing about the ghost threat, so that even though most of mid-town Manhattan is a mess after the final battle, they are able to explain it away as a gas explosion or something to that effect. This will keep the franchise from having to denounce the Ghostbusters in a sequel or drop them back into a world in which the public is now fully aware of ghosts. This will give the franchise much more longevity. There’s a funny dynamic we want to play with where the government eventually starts working with the Ghostbusters but has to keep denouncing them publicly, having a Cecily Strong type character always saying terrible things about them in press conferences and then apologizing to them behind the scenes, even though her public attacks on them get more and more personal. “I’m sorry, I just have to make it sound convincing.”)

Tonally, the movie will be a bit scarier and more hi-tech than the original and the set pieces will be bigger, while still being very funny. For example, I want in the third act to have the entire police force and army accompany the Ghostbusters to the final battle but since our villain only wants to deal with the Ghostbusters and wants to make the government look ridiculous, he possesses the entire police and army forces and makes them do a big ridiculous dance number in the middle of Fifth Avenue, thus neutralizing them (and delighting himself). I think that having our main villain be both evil and funny in the ways screws with our world as he’s trying to carry out the points of his manifesto (get revenge on everyone who slighted him, humiliate and take down Wall Street, make the United States look ridiculous to the rest of the world and eventually destroy NYC, which to him is the brain of the US), as well as have fun with the ghosts he picks to carry out various tasks (could be all dead villains and famous criminals he recruits from the ghost world and - in what I think could be a billion dollar idea - recruits the ghosts of evil beings from other parts of the universe - yes, ghost aliens! “Our world isn’t the only place in the universe with bad and dangerous beings that have died, you know. There’s a lot of bored dead monsters out there who are just looking for something to do.”)

Anyway, these are all things we’re experimenting with and are looking forward to exploring as we write the first draft. I hope this helps in your lunch.

Break a leg! :0)
Paul

To be honest, if we are going to go for a unified mythology like marvel or Star Wars, the new films probably should acknowledge the old ghostbusters somehow

Will there be as many nods as Ivan would like? Probably not. But at this point, I just want to see how our first draft shakes out and what it can hold and what it can’t and then we’ll take it from there. But the bottom line is that we heard Ivan and he made it clear that he wouldn’t get in our way, that he would definitely weigh in on things but that in the end, the decisions were ours to make. We’ll see if he sticks to that but for now he feels heard and respected and it was good to get inside his head. I genuinely like him and he remains one of my comedy directing heroes. So, all good at the moment. But we will make this movie our own. It will be a full reboot.

I’ll give you updates as we go.

GBFans Op note:

It looks like Ivan was trying to salvage atleast a shred of dignity for the original movies by atleast getting them acknowledged. As we can see he ultimately failed.

As of late October that's the latest name Paul Feig has decided would be a great GB, Leslie Jones

Words simply fail. Can any director be more demonstrably unqualified to lead and reboot a goldmine of a franchise than Paul Feig?

I just love the comment about being worried that Ivan and Dan think they have more creative control and protectors of the property than even before..... Uh hello Sony, it IS Dan's property. And to a lesser extent, Ivan, Bill, and Harold's estate. At least they want to do a brand study supposedly. Maybe Dan n Ivan can win out in the end and at least save the film a lil bit. But I doubt it as it seems that they want to do what they want, and to heck with anyone else and what they think..... Seems to me they need to hire a director is more willing to play well with others and get the best out of the franchise. Paul has illustrated to me, IMO, that he is not capable of either, from those emails.

Sounds like they're on the "me too!" bandwagon of making a tentpole comic book movie with flavor of the month actors where half the city is destroyed in an idiotic cgi demo-reel while setting up for umpteen sequels.

Don't get me wrong, I love that style of movie. But Ghostbusters is not that type of flick and making desperate attempts to morph it into a cash cow comic book property will come off as exactly that on screen....desperate.

If thats the movie they make......

Pass.
#4822488
Guys, this is how the sausage gets made. It's never pretty but I have a hard time imagining any sort of major motion picture's conception going any differently. They are talking about work, not waxing poetic about how much they love Ghostbusters and how much it means to them. None of this proves they DON'T love Ghostbusters, since one way or another, you've got to discuss this stuff if you are going to get a major motion picture off the ground. I don't know why you'd expect anything different. It's their JOBS to talk like this.

But we can consider it confirmed that this movie's definitely being fast-tracked if they want a rough script done by end of December. Ivan is (depending on who you ask) either annoyed or excited, no word on what Danny thinks, Paul Fieg is still fighting to make his film a total reboot without the events of the 80s films having happened but with references to the first film. Wants it to be scarier then the first. Serial killers and ghost aliens and dancing possessed cops. Well... :sigh: "ALRIGHT PAUL IF YOU ARE REALLY SURE!"

Here's the thing about the first movie. With the exception of the ghost blow job (which was turned into a dream sequence,) the actual plot of the film is not funny. The ghosts are not funny. Being possessed is not funny. Heck, even Stay Puft, silly as he is in concept, is a legitimate threat to our heroes and the city they live in. The humor doesn't come from the villains. The humor comes from how these SNL/ Second City improv comedian characters handle these very dire situations. Their humor and humanity vs. the bleak evil occult. I worry that Paul Fieg can't resist making his villain funny, and I don't think that's a wise place to take it.

The one thing that weirds me out is that though is he wants the separate Ghostbusters to unite and form their company at the END of the movie, rather then the beginning, which implies they take down some sort of big bust together. BUT they also have the complete cooperation of the government organizing big evacuations and they are also become secret agents keeping the existence of ghosts hidden from the public, a la Men in Black. I just don't see how those two ideas work together. How do they get government cooperation before their business even exists? How does the government even know why they are? Patriot Act? I'm kind of getting sick of movies portraying "The Government" as an all-knowing Big Brother security state, and that being a GOOD thing.

If you were expecting loud poetic declarations of how much they love the franchise, you are looking in the wrong place. These people have a lot of work to do. But let me put it this way: if you need a "Brand study" to tell you what is appealing about Ghostbusters, then you just don't get it. The things they say about the franchise: ("make it feel like a comic book property!" "This is our marvel!" "Real movie stars!" "Oceans 11 in a paranormal universe!" "Everything you want in a blockbuster!" "All my favorite people in one universe!" "Just walked into a goldmine!" "merchandising, consumer products, TV, animation!").... All that makes me feel more like they are gushing about what Ghostbusters COULD be for them, rather then what it actually already is.

They talk about a massive multi-film universe...without examining how Marvel made that work. It takes more then just SAYING "These things happen in the same universe," they need to actually develop a story and have an end goal in mind... see "The Amazing Spider Man 2" for what happens when you introduce a ton of new characters without really having anything for them to do besides tease their own spin off movies that you have no reason to care about.

"we start with the mythology, develop a think tank for it. come up with the entire universe first, then start into the script(s)" is in fact the right order to do things in, but Marvel's "think tank" is one guy, Kevin Feig, and he's basically allowed to do what he wants without interference from upper management. To contrast, this IS Sony's upper management, and rest assured whoever's in that "think tank" developing the "mythology" is going to have to constantly be dealing with every single producer named in these emails, who will constantly be looking for things to market. It can be hard to construct a coherent mythology in such circumstances...

Expect the worst, hope for the best. Bracing myself. We'll just have to wait see what happens next.

I wasn't expecting any "loud poetic declarations of how much they love the franchise". These are Hollywood movie studio folks and mainstream film directors. I doubt they understand the emotion we call "love".

What I was expecting, however, is ideas that don't STINK TO HIGH HEAVEN.

What I was expecting was some sort of plan from these professionals that might sound better than something I could come up with myself while sitting on the can.

What I was also expecting was some clue between them of what wouldn't RUN THE FRANCHISE STRAIGHT OFF A CLIFF.

And yes, I was looking in the wrong place, evidently.

I'm not defending what's going on. I think it's just important to focus our anger at the right things. Being mad at business people for talking about business in business emails with other business people is unlikely to get us anywhere and might undermine the legitimacy of our concerns. That's all.

Keep in mind, at the upper echelons of Sony, you have people who make seven/eight figures a year. Every last one of them could quit today and retire with enough money to go start up their own country somewhere. They don't need to work another day in their lives unless they want to. And some of these people sound legitimately excited about what they are doing, even if they are excited about the wrong things.

And you can tell when a director really has no love for the film he's making, and it's never a good thing. In the end, the director works for the producers, and if you've listened to some of those production war stories, the director himself can be awfully de-powered when the studio has a lot riding on a certain film. Heck see Ghostbusters 2 for what can happen when some producers usurp a director's role and start making creative decisions for him. Everybody wants too badly to be Marvel and have their own huge multi-film blockbusting universe-spanning franchise, and yet no one wants to actually look at why that works for Marvel...and isn't working for, say, Sony and their many planned Spider-Man spin-offs.

That's what Ghostbusters would need if it was going to succeed as a multi-movie, spin-off-happy franchise: it would need it's own Kevin Feige. Someone with an actual creative/story-driven direction for the universe, not to mention a genuine love and respect for of the source material, who could keep the whole train moving down the tracks towards an end goal.

I'm not mad at "business people", I'm mad at the freaking potential DIRECTOR of the movie and the STUDIO HEAD. They should know better. They should have a freaking clue about the franchise.

These emails reveal that they are clueless.

The movie they are describing in the emails, the movie that they are planning to make, has about as much chance of being good (and making a profit) as I do of becoming the king of England. Aren't "business people" supposed to know things like that?
#4822517
Yeah This is the first time I have ever dreaded something new from the franchise. I understand that this is the early stages of getting this movie off the ground, but everything they are talking about just sounds like a train wreck waiting to happen. I am really not excited about this film. I am starting to think that Sony has bigger problems than this Hacking thing. I am really at a loss that the "professional studio." Can't just build on the existing universe. That they have to build their own universe to build on. They can't build on the established universe, but the Fan Films can. The fan films have already built on the universe. I am sorry for repeating myself, but I have a hard time wrapping my head around this. Why can the Fans come up with Great Original Characters and great stories. (Return of The Ghostbusters by Hank Braxton being my personal favorite.). Why can't the people that get paid 9 figures a year come up with something half as good? Am I the only person that feels this way? :):):)

Oh Well time will tell ;)
