It's been confirmed today by the New York Police Department that actor Rick Moranis was the victim of an unprovoked attack on New York's Central Park West, near 70th Street, on Thursday morning.
Mr. Moranis briefly visited a nearby hospital as he was experiencing pain in his head, back and hip after he was punched to the ground. He then proceeded to report the incident at the NYPD's 20th Precinct.

In a post which includes footage of the incident as it occurred, the New York Police Department's Crime StoppersTwitter account has released the following details for those who might have information about the suspect in the assault:
Anyone with information about the attack is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). You can also submit a tip via their website or on Twitter, @NYPDTips. All calls are kept confidential.

A few years back, there was a man in Chicago who was running up and down State St. punching people in the head for no apparent reason. Even punched out a female anchor who was leaving the news studio after filming a report on the very man. Turned out he was schizophrenic. Maybe this person is also suffering from a mental illness.

Or he's just an angry person who lashed out on the first person he saw. Either way, senseless.

A global plauge, murder wasps, fires, locust swarms... and now Rick Moranis gets punched in the head.

Really 2020, really?

This news story made me angrier than is probably healthy and sensible. And confused, but mostly angry.

Seems to be a recurring thing in NYC these days. People randomly punching the elderly. Google it. Lots of stories. It's insane.

I hope they find the punk that did this and I hope he gets thrown in with some fans of Moranis.

I did a little digging. The sad thing is, the guy's a remorseless repeat offender who's been arrested like 13 times.

In fact, he was arrested and released SINCE the Moranis attack. On October 17th he assaulted someone on the subway and the NYPD took him into custody for that.

So the positive ID of him for the Moranis assault must have come more recently than that, since he was out for them to arrest him anew.

According to his defense attorney, he is a diagnosed schizophrenic who has been been treated at in-patient mental health facilities. Nobody wants to see Rick Moranis punched, but maybe it's best the story just dies and the man who assaulted him gets the help that he needs.
