Discuss the upcoming 4th movie, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire to be released in March 2024.

Finally got my Blu Ray and just watched it for the second time since the theater. I enjoyed it even more.

It’s hard to explain but it feels way more focused. I agreed before it came off scattered but I actually see it differently now. Sure there’s better ways they could have done certain things but I think it does a good job building up by showing us everyone’s situation.

Even the final battle comes off way better. It’s not rushed. There did not need to be a huge city wide fight. Garraka freezes the entire city including the GB who needed to protect the containment unit. He would have won if it wasn’t for Melody basically because even Nadeem didn’t have a match. Not saying they couldn’t have done it a different way but it’s still well put together.

Another thing people were saying, including me, was it’s weird Lucky and Trevor hadn’t kept in touch but he says “when you said you were entering I didn’t know you’d be blowing stuff away with lasers”. Entering what? A job? He knew she was coming to NY though. Maybe she couldn’t tell him exactly since even Winston had not told them about the research center yet. That’s still weird but there could be some reason for it.

I watched the deleted scenes. None of the ones included would have made it any better. Not sure why they trimmed Trevor’s attic scene. Him seeing the magazine cover was a nice brief moment.

Also they should have switched the mention of a helicopter to the beginning when they’re first talking about the containment unit being filled that way we’d still get the RGB reference.

The line was Trevor recalling she told him she was interning but didn't say she'd be blowing stuff away with lasers. In the lead up to the theatrical release, in a promotion/featurette, Celeste O'Connor mentioned Lucky was now an Engineering intern.

This delves into the Back in Town comic so if anyone still has to read it, I'll put the rest in spoiler tags

Oh ok I misheard it. That’s even better though. Thanks.

If anyone's so inclined, here's my long, boring, and snarky review/commentary on Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, stuffed with all sorts of failed attempts at humor--I never made it to the theater, so waited until I got it on DVD.:

Better Late Than Never? Fritz Babbles About That Movie All The Rest of You Saw Months Ago

Short version: I ended up liking it a lot. I don't know if it will hold up, but right now I'd say it's my second favorite Ghostbusters movie (some of the reasoning is in the review/commentary).

So…Ogre isn’t like ur Bro’s real name, right? Is it? If so that is the coolest name in the history of names.

I read ur review & while I thought Frozen Empire was cool(heh) I just think there is no way it’s better than the second movie(flaws and all). This movie doesn’t have a sequence that comes anywhere close to the court room bust or the subway scene or Peter hosting a paranormal talk show, a character as funny as Janosh my main man Poha, a scene as bad ass as Venkman roasting a 17th century Moldavian tyrant, a sequence as big as taking lady Liberty for a stroll(I don’t abide the “It’s Stay Puft 2.0” criticism)

Now there’s an actual cameo I’d be down for. What’s Janosh up to? Did he ever get his apartment with free parking? The world must know. *I* must know.
#justice4Janosh

That might’ve been a cool cameo. Instead of a wasted Patton Oswalt Ray takes the orb to Janosh who recognizes the art work or something museum related.

I wasn’t big on Answer the Call but I will say the one thing it does better than this movie is the action and busting.

It’s a problem. Right? Am I alone? Ghostbusters in 2024 with the tech & budget of todays movie making should be able to have more than a single bust. And it was a sequence done a million times better in Afterlife. Another car bust! A 100 million should buy more scale than this I’d think. Look what The Creator or Godzilla Minus One could do on budgets less than this. Those movies have waaay more scope.

Ghostbusters should be BIG. Afterlife got away with the intimate feel. But it still felt bigger somehow than this movie.

If I’m ranking the films I’d say
  • 1: Ghostbusters
  • 2:GB2
  • 3: Afterlife
  • 4:Frozen Empire
  • 5 ATC

I was also thinking FE is better than GB2.

I love GB2 but it retreads the first movie so much. I agree FE should have had more ghostbusting or at least 1 really good bust besides the finale (Sewer Dragon goes by so fast) but it actually does things differently.

It’s not about reopening the business. It expands the equipment and operations. Everyone has their own personal things they’re dealing with. It introduces stuff like Nadeem’s powers and Melody being a ghost that doesn’t require capturing. There’s more to defeating (well trapping) Garraka than just shooting him out of our world.

There are things it could have done better but being a different overall movie makes it a better sequel than GB2 imo. Again nobody get me wrong...I love GB2 I just have to give FE more credit.

Lol...no, of course it's not his real name. "OgreBBQ" is his user name some places, so when I refer to him online it's by that name.

Didn't expect everybody to agree with my analysis/snark, but thanks for taking the time to read it.

Not sure where i’d rank them.

GB1 is the gold standard. The others? Idk, theyre all such a mixed bag of misfits it really depends on what mood youre in and what criteria youre going by. Lol

If by film “quality” it be:

Gb1, Gb3, Gb2, Gb4

If its pure GB juiciness and entertainment:
Gb2, gb1, gb4,gb3

As a “Ghostbusters” movie; FE works better than Afterlife. Gets right to it, and the OGs are there throughout making it feel more like a sequel whereas Afterlife felt more like a “spinoff/soft reboot” that took a bit to get going as it needed to retell the franchise all over again.

@natedawg

Idk man. No sequences that compare to Venkmans show? “Repossessed” is a pretty frickin hilarious scene, Aykroyd kills it and i think its a fair to rank it next to World of the Psychic.

Are you ranking it next it just because it’s got a similar thing of them hosting a show? In that regard yeah it totally can be compared. I’d agree with that.

But as like an act of writing, performing, directing & comedy? Sure you could compare them but to me it’s super clear which one reigns supreme.

Repossessed is a fun scene but World of the Psychic is just killer line after killer line. Venkman’s look to the camera when Elaine starts digging in to her story is peak Venkman.

Here’s what I thought when the Repossessed scene ended: Aww come on that could’ve gone on for another couple guests.

There’s no way I look at World of the Psychic and think, how could they have made that even better. It’s perfect as is. With Repossessed I don’t think they executed the idea to its full potential. If that makes sense. It’s a fun scene but like almost everything in this movie is feels like “wait! That’s it? You were doing so well. Come back to that” but the movies got so much story and characters to deal with that they don’t have the real estate for it.

But yeah I can see how you could compare them. I guess that’s fair.

If we take the movies on a scene by scene basis, forgetting about the overall story, forgetting about how GB1 relates to it, or how Afterlife relates to Frozen Empire. Just on a scene by scene basis I think GB2 blows Frozen Empire out of the water.

To make Ghostbusters 2 a much better film all you’d have to do if beef up the Climx and give it more heft. Frozen Empire, making it a much better film is a lot messier. Which isn’t to say it’s bad. No way. To be me those 2 original films are working on another gear and level. Which probably has a lot to do with the cast and the energy they bring. For example Frozen Empire doesn’t have a Rick Moranis or Peter MacNicol. To use baseball terminology, those are strong closers.

On a seperate note. I’d love to know how much Bill Murray made doing this movie. Any guesses?

In order of enjoyment, basically the same order of release, gb1, gb2, Afterlife, FE. FE for me was a chore to get through, I came for ghosts and ghost busting, not implied ghost busting with the family off doing it while Phoebe sulks in the Firehouse. Too much family drama and teen angst.

For me it's:
Ghostbusters
Ghostbusters: Afterlife
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
Ghostbusters II

Afterlife edged out Frozen Empire because it had a more cohesive story, but the latter still has plenty of good visuals, busting moments, and scenes with the surviving '84 cast. :)

It’s surprising to see a few of you list Frozen Empire over the second film. Granted maybe it’s not fair to make these lists given we’ve lived with the first two movies for so long. We know them inside out. So frozen empire still has that new car smell. I’d be fascinated to see if these ranks remain the same within the following year

Here’s an interesting one. If we are ranking the films just by comedy and laughs, how would you rank them? My list changes a bit for that.
  • 1)GB 1
  • 2)GB 2
  • 3) Frozen Empire
  • 4) Afterlife.
I was really pleased with the comedy of Frozen Empire. It has some good laughs. I consider the first 3 in my rankings comedy films. Afterlife to me isn’t really a comedy. They were working in a different genre on that one. It should bother me but the vibe of the film is so good I can forgive it.

I thought Frozen Empire was a major let down busting/action and visuals wise compared to Afterlife. The major bust, the first sequence of the film, is problematic. It’s the exact same idea from Afterlife but not near as exciting, fun or inventive(with some spotty cgi here and there). I don’t think there’s a bust until the climax right? They go out on calls but we aren’t seeing much.

For me the trailers just had me so hyped for this movie. Building up Garraka, the death chill and a ghost army. I feel like it only partially succeeded
