There've been a few systems over the years. Some builders have had spring-pop mechanisms... which have resulted in some disastrous results. Others have had lever-activated mechanisms, which aren't as fast, but are less likely to self-destruct.

Then there's the Matty Wand, which uses electronic-moved mechanics.
