We are deeply saddened to report the passing of legendary voice actor Peter Cullen, whose distinctive baritone graced countless animated characters throughout his storied career. Cullen made a memorable guest appearance on The Real Ghostbusters, voicing the menacing Doctor Destructo, the arch-nemesis of the comic-book hero Captain Steel, a role that showcased his remarkable range in bringing villainous characters to life.
While Ghostbusters represented just one chapter in Cullen's expansive career, his influence on popular culture extended far beyond his time in the supernatural comedy series. He became best known for his iconic portrayal of Optimus Prime across multiple Transformers franchises, lending gravitas and nobility to the Autobot leader. Cullen's versatility was evident in his diverse voice work, which included the melancholic Eeyore for Disney, the cheerful Monterey Jack in Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers, and the sinister K.A.R.R. in Knight Rider. Each performance was a testament to his technical skill and emotional depth.
Cullen's death was announced on Thursday by his agent, Kevin Motley.

I just heard about this on Thursday. While I never had the opportunity to meet Peter Cullen in person, I am pleased that I have his autograph in my collection. As with Lorenzo Music, Frank Welker, Maurice Lamarche and many others he literally was a voice of my childhood and beyond. From his work on G.I. Joe and The Transformers, to Winnie The Pooh, to guest starring on The Real Ghostbusters and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I also fondly recall him narrating many movie trailers and promotional spots for cable tv channels like Cartoon Network. It is kind of eerie timing. Hasbro’s been doing an “Apology Tour” for the animated movie’s 40th anniversary, specifically apologizing for killing off Optimus. The tag line is “Forty Years Later, It Still Hits Like A Truck”
They’re going to have a limited theatrical rerelease in September; it’s gonna hit with a whole new dimension now.

He had such a memorable and distinct voice. Truly one of the best voice actors, up there with Frank Welker, Maurice Lamarche and Lorenzo Music.
He no longer speaks yet we hear him everywhere.

There have been a number of celebrity deaths that have bummed me out lately. Screaming Mad George was one of them. Then it went Dolly, then Curry, but the hardest hitting one for me was easily Peter Cullen. I did have the chance to meet him, but I couldn’t afford his autograph at the time. However, I did get to watch my buddy get his Transformers movie poster signed by both him and Frank Welker. One of the few times they were together doing a meet and greet. Now, it’s something I really regret not having been able to have done at the time. I even have Dave Coulier’s and Maurice LaMarche’s autographs, so Welker and Cullen would’ve been a no-brainer. His voice is one that simply cannot be replaced. Rest in peace.
