Stone was born and raised in Brookline, Massachusetts.1 He launched his entertainment career as a stand-up comedian, performing at The Comedy Store in both its Los Angeles and New York City locations.4 He built a following through character impersonations, specializing in Archie Bunker and Rodney Dangerfield.2 Harold Ramis, who worked with Stone on Ghostbusters, noted approvingly: "He does a great Rodney Dangerfield."2
Stone's comedy work led to commercial acting. He worked with the Miller Brewing Company for several years performing voice-over and impersonation work for their advertising campaigns.2 He was a member of the Screen Actors Guild throughout his film and television career.2
Stone's screen career spanned roughly four decades, though his individual roles tended to be supporting or single-episode appearances.
His earliest film credit was Dayton's Devils (1968), an action-heist film in which he played an Air Policeman.5 He returned to television work in the mid-1980s, appearing in one episode of Miami Vice (1985), where he played Jim Bostwick, the owner of a building called "The Maze,"1 and one episode of Moonlighting (1986).1
He later appeared in the Australian romantic comedy Hotel de Love (1996)1 and the family sports film Like Mike (2002).1 His final credited film appearance was in The Human Stain (2003), an adaptation of the Philip Roth novel directed by Robert Benton and starring Anthony Hopkins and Nicole Kidman.6 He also appeared in Police Academy 3: Back in Training (1986).1
Stone played the Coachman, a Central Park carriage driver who briefly encounters the possessed Louis Tully (Vinz Clortho) during the Keymaster sequence of Ghostbusters (Chapter 20).73 The scene is a brief but visually striking moment in the film's build toward the climax at Spook Central.
Stone reportedly was nervous during the filming of his scenes on set.
Danny Stone died on April 24, 2015, in Woodstock, New York,1 thirteen days after his fifty-ninth birthday. He was survived by family in the Hudson Valley region of New York.
