Plot
The Ghostbusters' growing public notoriety is starting to complicate their personal lives. Trevor Spengler channels his energy into planning a "friendiversary" celebration for himself and Lucky, while Phoebe Spengler struggles to find genuine connection beyond her social media following and meets someone who might become a real friend. Meanwhile, a cursed ghostly saber surfaces at an art museum in the Upper East Side and summons the ghost of the infamous Captain Kidd. With a spectral pirate threatening to transform all of Manhattan into a 17th-century ghost pirate town, the team has to set personal matters aside.

Development
On April 10, 2024, writer David Booher announced during an interview (approximately 55 minutes in) that additional 4-issue mini-series were planned following Ghostbusters: Back in Town, and that he would be writing the next one.
On January 23, 2025, the series was formally announced under the title Ghostbusters: Dead Man's Chest. The announcement confirmed Aviv Or as artist, with Cris Peter (colorist), Jimmy Betancourt (letterer), and David Booher (writer) all returning from Back in Town. The series was confirmed to be set between Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, following the same continuity window as the previous mini-series. Regular and variant covers for Issue #1, along with two interior pages, were revealed at that time. The official series synopsis and a quote from Booher about his research into Captain Kidd's historical connection to lower Manhattan were also released.
On April 14, 2025, a five-page interior preview was posted publicly ahead of the May 21 release.
Continuity Notes
The following references and callbacks appear throughout the issue, drawn from page-by-page annotations:
- Page 3: The Upper East Side Art Museum's interior layout is loosely based on the Guggenheim Museum. Trevor mistakenly names "Rodan" (the kaiju) when he means Auguste Rodin the sculptor. The collected trade paperback edition corrects this to "Rodin."
- Page 4: Phoebe uses the Drone Trap, first introduced in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
- Page 6: Phoebe mentions a Poltergeist sighting in Hell's Kitchen. She addresses Ray as "Dr. Ray," consistent with her habit established in Frozen Empire.
- Page 7: Phoebe notes it has been six months since she enrolled at Zeddemore Academy. A student tries to get her to say the franchise's famous motto, "I ain't afraid of no ghost!"
- Page 8: The trio of mean girls from Ghostbusters: Back in Town Issues #1 and #2 return.
- Page 12: Trevor states it will be 18 months since he and Lucky first met in Summerville. The issue notes this creates a minor continuity tension with a Back in Town Issue #1 synopsis that places that series 18 months after Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Background details include a drawing of the Charging Bull near Wall Street, a reference to Trinity Church Cemetery, tickets for the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, a note for Leo's Bagels (3 Hanover Square), and a reference to MoMA.
- Page 13: Gary mentions the microwave broke again, a callback to Back in Town Issue #3.
- Page 14: Gary references his time as a substitute science teacher during the events of Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Callie references the family's move to New York City, depicted in Back in Town Issue #1.
- Page 16: Ray Stantz and Phoebe appear as guests on Podcast's show, Mystical Tales of the Unknown Universe (first named in Ghostbusters: Afterlife). Ray is dressed in his Ghostbusters II appearance. Ray recounts choosing the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man as Gozer's Destructor form during the original film's events. The Hammer of Truth from Frozen Empire is visible on a shelf.
- Page 19: One of the mean girls paraphrases "I see dead people" from The Sixth Sense. She also calls Phoebe "Ghost Girl," the same nickname given to Erin Gilbert in the 2016 film.
- Covers: Both the regular Tyler Crook cover and the Max Sarin variant cover depict Captain Kidd and his ship, the Adventure Galley.
