Physical design

The Ecto-1 concept threads through the entire physical package. Ivan Reitman described it in his June 2017 introduction; Dan Schoening elaborated in an April 2017 interview that the book would be designed like a vintage instruction manual for the 1950s Cadillac that became Ecto-1.

The outer front cover shows the front of Ecto-1 facing the reader; the outer back cover shows the rear. Inside, the interior front cover presents the left side of Ecto-1's dashboard, and page 1 presents the right side. The interior back cover carries the second half of the Ecto-1 specifications sheet. Page 2 reproduces a period Cadillac advertisement depicting the car as Ray purchased it in the first film, alongside a Manhattan City Bank check dated October 1, 1984. Page 3 shows the rear interior of Ecto-1.

Page 383 closes out the vehicle theme with a reference spread charting every Ecto-1 variant by year of debut:

Variant Year
Ecto-1 (original film) 1984
Ecto-1 (The Real Ghostbusters) 1986
Ecto-1A (Ghostbusters II) 1989
Ecto-1 (Extreme Ghostbusters) 1997
Ecto-1B (Ghostbusters: The Video Game, Realistic Version) 2009

Page 384 shows Ecto-1 poses from the back, left side, and right side.

The book also collects the "Haunted America Case Files" feature from all eleven issues of Ghostbusters International (pages 354-375) and a full cover gallery (pages 376-382) spanning regular, subscription, retailer incentive, convention, and retailer exclusive covers for the Get Real and International runs. The only cover from the collected run not included is the second printing cover of Ghostbusters: Get Real #1.

Development

On December 22, 2016, editor Tom Waltz indicated that another prestige hardcover collection, following the format of the earlier Mass Hysteria hardcover, was in the works. The Cross-Rip hardcover was publicly announced on January 23, 2017. In an April 1, 2017 interview, Dan Schoening revealed the Ecto-1 design concept and confirmed that schematics, multiple Ecto versions, and the dashboard would appear throughout the book.

The July 2017 solicits (released April 19, 2017) carried the cover image, logline, and an initial release date of September 20, 2017. The date shifted before publication. A promotional ad appearing in IDW's Ghostbusters: Dia de Los Muertos one-shot still listed the September date after the change was finalized. The book went on general sale October 11, 2017, with Amazon availability from September 26, 2017.

Trivia

  • Ivan Reitman's introduction, written in June 2017, references Ghost Corps, IDW Comics, Ghostbusters: Get Real, The Real Ghostbusters, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Ghostbusters crossover, Extreme Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime, Ghostbusters International, Ghostbusters 101, the 2016 film, and the cities of Venice and Iceland visited in the International arc.
  • Among the items visible on Ecto-1's dashboard on page 1: a can of Blody (the drink first advertised in The Real Ghostbusters episode "The Halloween Door" and recurring throughout the IDW comics), a Twinkie, and a pack of cigarettes and devices from Chapter 20 "Keymaster" in the first film.
  • A Post-It Note from Janine Melnitz on the page 1 dashboard includes a reminder to call Louis Tully (alluding to his appearance in the Ghostbusters Annual 2015), a note to bring empty traps to the United Nations Building (referencing Ghostbusters International #1), and an allusion to the Werecat Ghost from International #1.
  • "Elwood Motors," visible on the Cadillac advertisement on page 2, is a reference to The Blues Brothers.
