Main Story: "The Plot Thickens"

Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, and Winston Zeddemore continue the Ghostbusters' worldwide consultation tour, arriving in Paris. There they encounter Unknown Soldier Ghosts near the Arc de Triomphe, rescue a local from the manifestation, and are drawn into a larger haunting at the Olympia Restaurant near the Louvre. Meanwhile, back in New York, Janine Melnitz and new hire Kevin Tanaka manage the Firehouse while Special Agent Melanie Ortiz coordinates field operations with Egon Spengler and Kylie Griffin, who continue studying the Poveglian artifact recovered in the previous issue.

The Olympia Restaurant ghosts are visually based on the cast of the recurring Saturday Night Live "Olympia Cafe" sketch: one ghost represents Pete Dionasopolis (portrayed by the late John Belushi, the diner's owner), another is based on Sandy the waitress (Laraine Newman, from season 3, episode 14, originally aired March 18, 1978), and the third is based on George Dionasopolis (Dan Aykroyd, a cook and Pete's cousin, from season 3, episode 11, originally aired January 21, 1978). The in-story ghost's line "No fries, cheeps!" echoes a catchphrase from the sketch, where "cheeps" were one of only three things successfully ordered off the menu.

The issue closes on the Louvre, where the building begins manifesting paranormal activity. The scene is reminiscent of the Psychomagnotheric Slime sequence from Ghostbusters II. During production, the original intent was for the Louvre to be shown bleeding blood, but Sony/Ghost Corps requested the blood be removed before the printing deadline in response to a mass shooting in France.

Lieutenant Philip Constantin, the French police officer who aids the Ghostbusters, is visually based on Jean Reno, who played Inspector Jean-Paul Cardon in the 1995 film French Kiss. The man rescued by Ray near the Arc de Triomphe is also based on Kevin Kline's character Luc Teyssier from the same film.

Egon is shown using the Arm Mounted Proton Pack variant, which had last appeared in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Ghostbusters mini-series. Ray also mentions a pocket-sized PKE Meter, later revealed in issue #5 to be an animated-continuity leftover from the events of Ghostbusters: Get Real. Egon references a Scandinavian spell book he is looking into, later identified in issue #5 as the Rauoskinna.

Back-up Story: "Haunted America Case Files"

The Haunted America back-up follows Melanie Ortiz working with Special Agents Johnson and Mitchell to investigate a Caribbean pirate ship manifestation on River Street in Savannah, Georgia. The ghost ship and ghost pirates bear superficial similarities to Captain Jack Higgins and The Stag from The Real Ghostbusters episode "Sea Fright," and the story of the manifestation nods to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. The subscription cover's setting and the mention of student housing on River Street off the Savannah River appear to be a nod to artist Corin Howell, who attended the Savannah College of Art and Design and graduated with a degree in Sequential Art. Most of the ghost pirates on the subscription cover are visually based on Howell's friends from her Savannah drawing group.

Covers

The regular cover features Peter Venkman, Winston Zeddemore, and Ray Stantz battling a ghost at the base of the Eiffel Tower, illustrated by Dan Schoening and colored by Luis Antonio Delgado. Notably, neither the ghost nor the Eiffel Tower appear in the issue itself. The cover also contains a French language typo: it reads "bienvenu" where it should read "bienvenue a Paris."

The subscription cover, by Corin Howell, depicts Melanie Ortiz and agents Johnson and Mitchell battling ghost pirates on River Street in Savannah, Georgia. Howell confirmed after publication that most of the ghost pirates are visually based on her friends from a Savannah drawing group.

Production Notes

Burnham confirmed publicly in January 2016 that issues #4 and #5 would both center on Paris. In a podcast recorded in early April 2016, he revealed that he was not satisfied with the original ending of the issue, so he discarded the last ten pages and rewrote them entirely. He also confirmed on April 25, 2016, that he wrote the second half of the issue while ill with the flu. Dan Schoening revealed during the March 2016 Cyclotron round-table discussion that he was in the process of drawing the issue at that time, and posted a sneak-peek of two of the issue's ghosts on April 8, 2016.

A preview consisting of a cover, credits, and five pages was posted on April 24, 2016. On May 1, 2016, Schoening posted page thumbnails for pages 1 and 5. On May 17, 2016, Luis Antonio Delgado posted an unlettered version of page 3.

Selected Trivia and Easter Eggs

  • The "What Came Before!" recap page notes Kevin Tanaka as a nod to the secretary of the same first name in the Ghostbusters (2016) film. Kevin's ability to type 65 words per minute was established in Ghostbusters International #3.
  • In the opening scene, Janine has a drink from Pequod's, the international coffee chain introduced in Volume 1 of the IDW ongoing series. The number 2206 appears on Janine's calculator, a nod to Dana Barrett's apartment number in the first film. A Wise Potato Chips bag, a staple of Peter's office since the first film, is visible in the background.
  • The braces leaning against the wall behind Janine are from Peter's office in his first meeting with Walter Peck in the original film.
  • A doughnut box from Hasty Pastry Bakery, visible behind Janine, references the bakery mascot from The Real Ghostbusters episode "The Joke's on Ray." The box design itself nods to packaging used in the Krispy Kreme Ghostbusters 30th anniversary promotion (September 29 through October 31, 2014).
  • Kevin is carrying a box marked "Fire Station Headquarters," a nod to the U.K. printing of the Kenner Ghostbusters Firehouse Headquarters playset.
  • The license plate number 4386TN75 on the Paris street scene references the Citroen DS used by the Griswold family in National Lampoon's European Vacation.
  • Several tourists Ray speaks with on page 5 are visually based on characters from The Real Ghostbusters episode "The Ghostbusters in Paris."
  • A poster on page 15 bears the phrase "Ils Arrivent Pour Sauver Le Monde," which appeared on the cover of the 1984 French novelization of the first film (S.O.S. Fantomes) by Jason Dark. The Eiffel Tower image on the same poster is taken from the closing of the RGB episode "The Ghostbusters in Paris."
  • Ray falls victim to the "don't look in the trap" gag from the first film.
  • The police officer on page 9 is visually based on Jean Reno; another officer on page 16 appears to be based on Peter Sellers, known for portraying Inspector Clouseau in the Pink Panther films.
  • The "No Bozos" poster visible on page 16 is a reference to Peter's construction helmet in Ghostbusters II.
  • Kaia's last name was corrected in this issue's Dramatis Personae from "Maie" to "May," with "May" being the substitute suggested to Burnham.
  • The Louvre was one of the visions glimpsed in Ghostbusters: Get Real #4. The issue notes only one vision from that story remains to be fulfilled: a woman looking around in a foreboding forest.

Continuity

This issue continues directly from the events of Ghostbusters International #3, in which Ray discovered a charged artifact in Poveglia. The Poveglian Plague Doctor Ghost, the Venetian Shop Ghost (issue #2), and the Ghost Priests (issue #1) are all referenced in the recap page. Melanie alludes to a violent ghost case in Puerto Rico that is set up here and resolved in Ghostbusters International #6 as Esme Torres. The case file story sets up the events of issue #6 as well. The Scandinavian spell book referenced by Egon is identified in issue #5 as the Rauoskinna and was mentioned in the April 2016 solicitation for issue #7.
