Issues
Issue #1 (April 7, 2004)
Six months after the Ghostbusters defeated Gozer, their fame is fading and the team has settled back into routine busting. The issue reintroduces the core cast, including Janine Melnitz, Louis Tully, and Dana Barrett, while setting up the central antagonist: Michael Draverhaven, an escaped mental patient with a history connected to Egon, Peter, and Ray. The Subway Ghost from the original 1984 film makes an appearance. Issue #1 launched with an unusually large number of variant covers, totaling six editions, including retailer incentives limited to 1,000 copies each from Graham Crackers Comics and Toyzz.
Issue #2 (July 21, 2004)
The team's routine is disrupted by a mysterious brain-dead ghost haunting the subway and the escalating threat from Draverhaven, who is still at large. Ray is feeling unfulfilled with the repetition of everyday ghostbusting, while Janine pursues a closer relationship with Egon. The issue featured two covers, with a variant painted cover portraying Winston Zeddemore.
Issue #3 (November 10, 2004)
A series of seemingly unrelated ghost attacks across New York City stretches the team thin. Egon begins to suspect a coordinated force behind them rather than coincidence. Draverhaven resurfaces and is revealed to count Slimer among his ghost allies. Dana Barrett and Peter's relationship faces strain, while Ray remains in his funk. Shipping problems were severe with this issue; some retailers did not receive their copies until December 1st. Two covers were produced.
Issue #4 (January 29, 2005)
The series concludes as Draverhaven, commanding his Ghost Legion, launches his assault on New York and the Ghostbusters. The confrontation moves through Times Square and back to the Firehouse. By the final pages, Egon agrees to accompany Janine to a Mars Explorer Project exhibit, a small resolution to the relationship thread running through the series. Three covers were produced, including a Bulldog Collectibles exclusive featuring a giant green bulldog ghost with Egon.
The Zeddemore Factor (Issue #0, July 21, 2004)
Originally intended as a zero issue to precede Legion in stores, "The Zeddemore Factor" was instead released as a black-and-white print exclusive at the 88MPH Studios booth at San Diego Comic Con 2004. The story covers Winston Zeddemore's first day as a Ghostbuster, as the team responds to a Pterosaur Ghost infestation at the Museum of Natural History. It was produced with black-and-white line art by Billy Dallas Patton, inked by Serge LaPointe. A colorized version of the story was later included in the Titan Books collected edition.
Trade Paperback (Titan Books, 2005)
In July 2005, UK publisher Titan Books released a softcover trade paperback collecting all four Legion issues plus the colorized Zeddemore Factor. The colorization for the one-shot was handled by Adam Nichols for this edition. The Titan Books volume was published under ISBN 978-1845760755.
This collection did not include the bonus content that 88MPH Studios had separately promised for their own planned hardcover edition: concept art, an "Ecto-Logs" section, a foreword by Ghostbusters creator Dan Aykroyd, and a proposed afterword from an unspecified cast member. That 88MPH hardcover was never produced despite having collected pre-orders over an extended period.
Cancelled Projects
88MPH Studios announced plans for both a deluxe hardcover collection and an ongoing monthly series following Legion, neither of which was published.
The promised 88MPH hardcover would have included extras not present in the Titan Books edition: concept art, "Ecto-Logs," a Dan Aykroyd foreword, and an actor afterword. Pre-order windows were extended multiple times, but the book never appeared.
Three issues of the planned ongoing series were solicited with story descriptions before the project was cancelled:
- Ghostbusters Monthly #1: The Ghostbusters seek to expand globally, while a dead man wanders New York and something stirs in the Central Park Zoo.
- Ghostbusters Monthly #2: Egon and Janine's first official date, with Peter as an unlikely Cyrano. Winston goes solo, Louis receives an unwelcome visitor, and Ray visits the library.
- Ghostbusters Monthly #3: The powerful ghost Ahriman causes havoc, and Vinz Clortho returns for a second appearance.
None of these issues were produced.
Variant Covers
The Legion run is notable for its heavy use of variant covers. Issue #1 alone offered six editions. Across all four main issues, cover artists included Steve Kurth, Serge LaPointe, Blond, and Dan Brereton, with retailer-exclusive editions produced for Toyzz and Graham Crackers Comics (both limited to 1,000 copies each) and Bulldog Collectibles. The variant program drew mixed reactions, with some fans and commentators citing it as one of the series' more divisive elements, while others found the full cover gallery a distinctive collectible set.
