Story: "This Is Not The End"

A Sumerian god has taken hold of New York City. People are possessed, blood rains from the sky, and Dana Barrett and Louis Tully have been transformed into Terror Birds, a state visually echoing their possession in the original film. The Ghostbusters, joined by the Rookie, Ron Alexander, Special Agent Melanie Ortiz, Kylie Griffin, and the Chicago Ghostbusters, push their way through the chaos and up a long flight of stairs inside a building ruled by a spectral Judge Ghost.

On the roof, the team encounters the Ghostbusters of the Future, whose suits are modeled directly on Kenner's Fright Features action figure line. Future Egon warns the team about Gozer before Future Winston bids his present-day counterpart farewell with a Marine "Oorah!" The main team then faces Tiamat herself, a Sumerian deity whose second form draws from both the mythological description and the visual design seen in The Real Ghostbusters episode "I Am the City." Unable to overpower Tiamat conventionally, Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler, and Winston Zeddemore cross the streams, as Ray notes they have done at least twice before, against Gozer and against Ivo Shandor's Supreme Destructor Form in Ghostbusters: The Video Game.

Characters

The main cast of Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler, and Winston Zeddemore is joined by Janine Melnitz, Louis Tully, and Dana Barrett. Supporting roles include the Rookie, Ron Alexander, Special Agent Melanie Ortiz, and Kylie Griffin, along with the Chicago Ghostbusters. Antagonists include Mot, Aetil, the Terror Birds, Tiamat, and the Judge Ghost. The Judge Ghost is visually based on Judge Valkenheiser from the film "Nothing But Trouble."

Equipment

Characters deploy or reference the Proton Pack and Particle Thrower, Ecto Goggles, Kylie's PKE Meter, a Proton Pistol, a Ghost Trap, the Giga Meter, a Boson Caster, and a Compact Pack, as well as a Proton Pack in its realistic (film-accurate) configuration. Purple Slime and Blood Rain appear as story elements.

Locations

Key settings include Dana's Apartment, the Temple of Tiamat, and Tiamat's Dimension.

Development

Cover work was announced and developed over several months. On November 2, 2013, Tristan Jones announced he was working on subscription covers. On January 14, 2014, Erik Burnham revealed that Dan Schoening had produced a "simple yet awesome" cover. Jones shared work-in-progress images for a third subscription cover on January 17 and 19, 2014, confirming on January 20 that it was intended for issue #16.

On March 7, 2014, Burnham noted he was working on the next script. On April 16, 2014, Burnham announced he had seen "the big finish for the first half of Mass Hysteria" and teased the Ghostbusters of the Future appearing in the first eight pages. Dan Schoening added a cryptic hint about their "future" on May 2, 2014. A cover, credits, cast, and four-page preview were posted on May 27, 2014. On June 24, 2014, Delgado shared unlettered versions of pages 16 and 19.

Covers

Three covers were produced for this issue. The regular cover and a subscription cover were drawn by Dan Schoening with colors by Luis Antonio Delgado. Additional subscription covers were contributed by Tristan Jones and Roberto Goiriz. The Schoening subscription cover is a homage to The Real Ghostbusters, depicting the team departing the Firehouse in Ecto-1, with Slimer clinging to the roof, the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man behind the vehicle, and the Icon Ghost beneath a manhole cover. Egon holds a PKE Meter and Ray has his Proton Pack ready.

Trivia

  • On the Comic Book Men episode that premiered November 30, 2014, Ernie Hudson and the staff of Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash sold comics from an ice cream truck, including the subscription cover of this issue.
  • Peter's dialogue on page 1 alludes to the team's history of confronting major threats atop tall buildings, referencing Ghostbusters (Gozer/Stay Puft), Ghostbusters: The Video Game (Stay Puft again), Volume 1 Issue #4 (Idulnas/Stay Puft), and Volume 2 Issue #12 (Rodefhiri).
  • The paintings in the lobby on page 1 are background art taken from The Real Ghostbusters episode "I Am the City."
  • The stairwell sign on page 2 reads "Level 15," one of Luis Delgado's recurring numbered easter eggs.
  • Winston's observation on page 2 that major threats never seem to possess buildings in the Outer Boroughs is a comedic running note.
  • Rookie mentions the Sears Tower; Peter circles back to this on page 6.
  • The Ghostbusters of the Future on page 3 wear suits visually based on the Kenner Fright Features action figure line.
  • Future Winston's parting "Oorah!" on page 5 is the standard US Marine Corps cheer.
  • A Hole Ghost from The Real Ghostbusters episode "The Hole in the Wall Gang" appears in a crack near the roof access door on page 6.
  • Egon's fear on page 7 echoes his line from the original film; Peter teases him about how he aged.
  • Page 8 echoes the rooftop ziggurat reveal from the original film.
  • Possessed Dana and Louis on page 11 retain their human faces in their Terror forms, unlike the fully transformed Terror Dogs in the original film.
  • Ron Alexander's "Get her!" on page 12 echoes Peter's line when the team first encountered the Library ghost.
  • Tiamat's attack on page 13 mirrors Gozer knocking the Ghostbusters backward in the original film.
  • Page 15 brings up Gozer and crossing the streams as the proposed solution.
  • Ray's page 16 note that they have crossed the streams at least twice references the defeat of Gozer and the defeat of Shandor's Supreme Destructor Form in Ghostbusters: The Video Game.
  • On page 20, like the end of the original film, Peter is the least covered in goop compared to the rest of the team.
  • This issue is referenced in Ghostbusters: Crossing Over Issue #3 (page 5) and Issue #8 (What Came Before page and page 5), where the streams crossing on Tiamat is discussed.
