Real Ghostbusters: NOW Comics Vol. 1 #19

3 min read

NOW Comics Vol. 1 #19 is an issue of The Real Ghostbusters comic book series published by NOW Comics, released in March 1990. The issue is structured as an anthology of four short stories, each centered on one or more Ghostbusters spending their free time and each encounter going sideways in supernatural fashion. Egon Spengler narrates the issue from a liminal space he calls the Ecto-Zone, adopting the role of host in a manner similar to the Twilight Zone anthology format.

Stories

Water Lilly

Ray Stantz returns to Toad Island, a place he visited as a child where he once befriended a mermaid. Finding the mermaid being harassed by a group of bullies throwing empty cans and taunting her, Ray intervenes. A man named Kenneth Grahame also attempts to stop them but is nearly attacked. Ray defuses the situation by confronting the bullies directly.

Peter and the Wolf!

Peter Venkman is on a date with Irena Cortez when she transforms into her werewolf form at a particularly bad moment, leaving Peter to handle the situation.

For Whom the Troll Tolls!

Egon Spengler, Janine Melnitz, and Shannon Phillips attend a circus, where they encounter a troll working for the Stromboli Circus. The troll explains that he was once a minion of Samhain, the Spirit of Halloween, but was exiled from trolldom after betraying him. Egon, noting that the New York State Penal Code does not recognize the existence of trolls, helps the troll escape with Janine and Shannon's assistance. The troll and others like him (referred to as Burrowers or Worms) are said to inhabit a magical realm accessible only from below, distinct from simply living underground.

Off Night

Winston Zeddemore takes an unnamed date to Cinema 7 to see a film called "Nicole," unaware that four gargoyles are scheming to ruin the evening. Slimer, following along unseen, repeatedly foils the gargoyles before Winston notices anything is wrong. At the end of the night, the gargoyles attempt to attack Slimer directly, and Winston captures all four of them.

Cast

The main Ghostbusters team appears across the four stories: Egon Spengler, Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Winston Zeddemore, Janine Melnitz, and Slimer.

Supporting and one-issue characters include Shannon Phillips (recurring NOW Comics character), Irena Cortez (a werewolf), Kenneth Grahame, the troll outcast named Frankie, Mr. Stromboli, four gargoyles, mermaids, Cavern Dwellers (also called Burrowers or Worms), and Winston's unnamed date. Samhain is referenced in flashback.

Ray Stantz's father is mentioned but does not appear.

Locations

The issue spans several New York City settings: Manhattan, the Firehouse, Toad Island, the Midway, Stromboli Circus, Winston's favorite restaurant, and Cinema 7. The World of Trolls is mentioned as the troll's place of origin. The Ecto-Zone serves as the framing device for Egon's narration.

Notes

  • The issue's structure, with Egon hosting from the Ecto-Zone and narrating four separate stories, is a deliberate homage to the Twilight Zone television series. The Twilight Zone is also referenced in two episodes of Extreme Ghostbusters.
  • This issue is notable as one of the only instances in the Ghostbusters franchise where a character (Egon) directly addresses the reader and breaks the fourth wall.
  • A note in the third story indicates that the second story ("Peter and the Wolf!") occurs roughly simultaneously: on page 11, Shannon Phillips tells Janine that "Irena's out chasing Peter," placing both events at the same time.
  • The front cover borrows elements from the Marvel Comics issue #29.
  • The troll's magical realm is described as accessible only from below ground, but is characterized as a separate dimension rather than a conventional underground space. Its relationship to "The World of Trolls" referenced in dialogue is left unresolved in this issue.
