At a rare book auction, Peter Venkman accidentally buys an ancient book whose wax seal is not supposed to be broken. While Janine Melnitz is on her lunch break, she opens the book and triggers the release of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The Ghostbusters capture the horsemen, but the ghosts soon escape the trap.

A priest from a monastery in Greece arrives at the firehouse looking for the book that had contained the horsemen. The team flies to Greece to obtain a replacement wax seal so they can recapture the ghosts before the world ends. Recapturing the horsemen means dealing with the ghostly riders while scaling a dangerously high cliffside.

    Characters

The episode features the regular Ghostbusters cast:

    • Peter Venkman
    • Egon Spengler
    • Ray Stantz
    • Winston Zeddemore
    • Janine Melnitz
    • Slimer

The antagonists are the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

    Trivia

Several continuity errors appear in the episode, with the wrong character occasionally in a shot or characters wearing the wrong clothes. In one moment, the phone sound effect comes in late: Janine asks "How'd he do that?" after Peter tells her to answer the phone before it has started ringing.

Egon's line "Metal fatigue?" echoes the original 1984 film, where Egon comments on the worn condition of the firehouse.

A television advertisement for Stay Puft brand marshmallows is briefly visible, though the on-screen text misspells the name as "Stay Puff."

The episode title is a play on the 1979 war film Apocalypse Now.2 Peter also refers to The Beatles as "The Fab Four."

    Production

The episode aired during the second season of the series and sits between "Ain't NASA-sarily So" and "The Devil to Pay" in the broadcast order.1 For the full run of the show, see the Real Ghostbusters: Episode Guide.
