Dario Marianelli (born June 21, 1963)1 is an Italian composer based in London, best known for his collaborations with director Joe Wright and for winning the Academy Award for Best Original Score for Atonement (2007).1 Within the Ghostbusters franchise, he composed the original score for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024), reuniting with director Gil Kenan after their earlier work together on the holiday film A Boy Called Christmas.2

Marianelli was born in Pisa, Italy. He studied piano and composition in Florence, where his teachers included David Kimball, before relocating to London in 1990. In London he completed a postgraduate year at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, studying with Francis Shaw, and then undertook a three-year postgraduate program at the National Film and Television School, graduating in 1997.1 His training spanned concert music, ballet, and theatre as well as film, and that breadth carried into the orchestral, piano-driven style for which he later became known.
Marianelli scored a number of films and stage projects through the 1990s and early 2000s, including Ailsa (1994) and Pandaemonium (2000), before his career-defining partnership began. In 2005, director Joe Wright hired him to score the period drama Pride & Prejudice, a collaboration that produced one of the era's most distinctive film scores and earned Marianelli his first Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score.1
The Wright partnership continued across several acclaimed films: Atonement (2007), The Soloist (2009), Anna Karenina (2012), and Darkest Hour (2017). Atonement, with its now-famous use of a clattering typewriter woven into the orchestral fabric, won Marianelli the Academy Award and the Golden Globe for Best Original Score in 2008, as well as a World Soundtrack Award; he was also BAFTA-nominated for it.1 Anna Karenina brought further Oscar, Golden Globe, and BAFTA nominations,1 and Darkest Hour added another BAFTA nomination.3
Beyond the Wright films, Marianelli's live-action credits include V for Vendetta (2006), The Brothers Grimm (2005), Agora (2009), Eat Pray Love (2010), Jane Eyre (2011), Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (2011), and Everest (2015). He also expanded into animation and family films, scoring the stop-motion features The Boxtrolls (2014) and Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) for studio Laika, the latter with director Travis Knight.1 He reunited with Knight for the Transformers spin-off Bumblebee (2018).1 In 2024 he scored both Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and Paddington in Peru.
Marianelli composed the original score for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the 2024 sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife and the fifth film in the live-action series. The film was directed by Gil Kenan, who co-wrote it with Jason Reitman.2 Marianelli had previously worked with Kenan on the holiday fantasy A Boy Called Christmas (2021), and that relationship led to his engagement on Frozen Empire.2
The score positioned Marianelli as a successor in a lineage that began with Elmer Bernstein's music for the original 1984 film,2 while the franchise's signature pop theme remained Ray Parker Jr.'s title song. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) was released by Sony Classical on March 22, 2024, alongside the film's theatrical opening.4
