The Bumper is the oddly shaped piece in the front of the Proton Pack fitted around the Synchronous Generator that helps to support the Ion Knob. It also has the "Motor-Synchronous" label placed upon it. :

The Bumper itself is not a "found part", according to member namebrand, the bumper is made from a two-part mold. Evidence of this can be seen today:

It has been suggested on this forum that the Bumper, while a fabricated part, might be based on a magnet from an actual cyclotron that is used to route the magnetic field of the particle acceleration. One can be seen here:
