Celeste O'Connor (born December 2, 1998) is a Kenyan-born American actor known for roles in independent and studio films including Selah and the Spades (2019), Freaky (2020), and Madame Web (2024).1 To Ghostbusters fans they are best known for playing Lucky Domingo in Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024). O'Connor was born on December 2, 1998 in Nairobi, Kenya, to a White American father and a Kenyan mother, and was raised in Baltimore, Maryland alongside a younger brother. They attended Notre Dame Preparatory School in Towson, Maryland, and studied violin and singing at the Peabody Preparatory, the community-education division of the Peabody Institute.1
Rather than moving directly into acting full time, O'Connor enrolled at Johns Hopkins University, where they majored in public health and pre-medicine and took coursework in Islamic studies.1 They graduated in 2021 and have continued to balance acting with academic interests in the social determinants of health, having served as a doctor's assistant in Peru, worked in a Baltimore program connecting underserved populations to health services, and assisted on 2019 research promoting the HIV-prevention medication PrEP; they have spoken publicly about wellness "under a lot of these different oppressive systems" and as an advocate for diversity and representation in entertainment.2
O'Connor made their screen debut in the independent film Wetlands (2017), playing Amy Johnson, and followed it with a supporting role as a teenage version of the lead character in the Netflix drama Irreplaceable You (2018).3
Their breakthrough came with Tayarisha Poe's Selah and the Spades (2019), a boarding-school drama in which O'Connor played Paloma Davis, a freshman drawn into the school's underground factions. The performance drew critical attention for its restraint and pensive presence and established O'Connor as an emerging talent. O'Connor plays Lucky Domingo across the Afterlife continuity. Lucky begins as a roller-skating carhop at the Spinners drive-in diner in Summerville, Oklahoma, becomes entangled in the Spengler family's confrontation with Gozer, and later relocates to New York City to work with the rebuilt Ghostbusters as an engineering intern. The character has continued in the IDW comic miniseries (Ghostbusters: Back in Town, Ghostbusters: Dead Man's Chest) and the video game Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord.
Early in pre-production, trade reports on March 12, 2019 indicated that Jenna Ortega was high on the list of actresses being considered for the role, which casting breakdowns described as a quick-witted teenage girl who works at an American Graffiti style carhop on roller skates. By July 8, 2019, O'Connor had signed on.
The character's name was kept under wraps for years. "Lucky" was first revealed publicly on March 28, 2021, when a pre-order listing for the Hasbro Plasma Series figure appeared prematurely on Amazon U.K. and described her as someone who works at the local drive-in diner and is not afraid to stir up a little trouble. The official reveal came on June 8, 2021 during Ghostbusters Day promotion, when O'Connor described Lucky as a young woman who had always wanted to leave her home town, meets the new kid at the diner where she works, gets pulled into his story, and finds the courage and adventure she had been looking for.
O'Connor reprised Lucky in the 2024 sequel, which moves the Spengler family and their Summerville friends to the original firehouse in New York City. Lucky takes on a more active role with the team there.
