Charles Dance (born Walter Charles Dance on October 10, 1946, in Redditch, Worcestershire, England) is an English actor, screenwriter, and director whose career encompasses theatre, film, and television across more than five decades. He trained with the Royal Shakespeare Company before moving into film and television work in the 1980s, and was appointed an OBE for services to drama in 2006.
Dance appeared in Ghostbusters: Answer the Call (2016) as Dean Harold Filmore, the provost of the Aldridge Mansion Museum and employer of paranormal researcher Erin Gilbert. Dance described Filmore as neither hero nor villain, but rather a straight man who simply does not understand or appreciate the Ghostbusters' activities. His casting was reported in December 2015.
Dance is best known internationally for his portrayal of the calculating patriarch Tywin Lannister in HBO's Game of Thrones (2011-2015), a role that brought him renewed global recognition. His earlier breakthrough came in the Granada Television miniseries The Jewel in the Crown (1984). Other notable credits include Bleak House (BBC, 2005), Michael Collins (1996), Gosford Park (2001), The Imitation Game (2014), and Mank (2020). He made his directorial debut with Ladies in Lavender (2004), starring Judi Dench and Maggie Smith.
