Early life and education
Kennedy grew up in Chicago, Illinois, where she competed as a figure skater from a young age and developed an extensive background in dance.2 She earned a BA in Speech and Drama from Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa, and later a Master's degree in Professional Writing from the University of Southern California.1
Early in adulthood, Kennedy built a career as a motivational speaker and sales trainer, eventually founding and running Danielle Kennedy Productions, a sales-training and professional-development company.1 She authored several books during this period, including Balancing Acts: An Inspirational Guide for Working Mothers (Berkley, 1995), which drew on first-hand experience raising eight children alongside a professional life.3
Career
Theatre
Kennedy performed with the Company of Fools theatre company in Hailey, Idaho, completing approximately 20 productions.2 It was there that she obtained her Screen Actors Guild card through the Taft-Hartley provision after playing Bruce Willis's mother in a production of True West taped for Showtime.2
In 2005, Kennedy and her husband relocated to Los Angeles to pursue screen work full-time.2 She has since accumulated more than 50 film and television credits.
Kennedy is also a Care Actor, belonging to an exclusive group of performers engaged by Kaiser Permanente to help medical staff improve patient-care techniques through simulation and role-play.1
Television
Kennedy became a series regular in the first season of the Netflix drug-cartel drama Narcos (2015), appearing in nine episodes as U.S. Ambassador Noonan, a Reagan-era diplomatic figure stationed in Colombia.4 Among her other recurring and guest credits are Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Parks and Recreation, American Horror Story, Grey's Anatomy, Criminal Minds, The Rookie, The Sex Lives of College Girls, Grown-ish, and How to Get Away with Murder.1
In 2024 she joined the ensemble of Netflix's comedy series A Man on the Inside, created by Michael Schur and starring Ted Danson, playing Helen Cubbler, the resident whose stolen family heirloom triggers the central investigation.5
Film
Kennedy's film credits include Day Shift (2022), the Netflix vampire-action comedy starring Jamie Foxx;1 Rockbottom; and Two Witches, for which she received a best supporting actress nomination.2 Her most widely recognised film role remains Roller Granny in Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021).
Awards
In 2024, the Desert Theatre League named Kennedy Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy (Professional) for her performance in It's Only a Play with The Bent theatre company.6
Ghostbusters
Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
In Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Kennedy portrays Roller Granny, a veteran carhop waitress on roller skates at Spinners Roller Hop in Summerville, Oklahoma. In the film, the character serves Callie Spengler during an evening shift, makes dry remarks about the late Egon Spengler (calling him "the Dirt Farmer"), and glides away with the film's signature "Nope."
The audition was posted online on June 26, 2019, under the film's working title Rust City,7 calling for a 70-to-90-year-old actress with roller skating experience described as "dry and funny in a way that makes her seem ambivalent to the customers." Kennedy was vacationing in Sun Valley, Idaho when her manager called with the opportunity.8 Unable to find roller skates at short notice, she recorded her audition tape on ice skates at a nearby rink in a single take, running her lines with a child who happened to be present at the rink.8 The sides provided to her deliberately concealed the family-centered story of the film. The "Nope" line was among her own additions from the audition video.8 Her skating background, both competitive figure skating from her youth and years as a rollerblader, made her a natural fit for the physicality the role required.8
Crystal Alysia (also credited as Crystal Roseborough) served as Kennedy's skating stunt double for the on-skates sequences filmed at Spinners.9
Personal life
Kennedy married and raised eight children before returning to acting as a primary profession.2 She and her husband relocated from Idaho to Los Angeles in 2005.2 Kennedy has spoken publicly about navigating ageism in the entertainment industry, expressing an intention to continue performing as long as her health allows.2
