Early life

Allen was born in 1958 and grew up in Naperville, Illinois, where he attended Naperville Central High School.2 He was raised in a musical family: his mother played piano and his father had a broad repertoire of songs.2 His nickname originated at Naperville Central when a classmate greeted him with "What's up, groover?" Over time the greeting morphed into "Gruber," and the name stuck.2 He professionally credits himself as "Dave (Gruber) Allen," with Gruber in parentheses.1

After high school Allen attended Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois.1 He began doing sketch and stand-up comedy in Iowa with a group called Don't Quit Your Day Job, which also included Steve Higgins and David Anthony Higgins.2 The trio performed at Larry Wrentz's Comedy Club in Des Moines, among other venues, before relocating to California.2 In Los Angeles Allen lived at "The Ranch," a North Hollywood house that served as a gathering point for comedians working their way up in the industry.

Career

Allen first gained wide visibility as part of the comedy team The Higgins Boys and Gruber alongside Steve Higgins (later a longtime writer and announcer for The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon) and David Anthony Higgins. The group graduated from regional clubs to a Comedy Central series of the same name, which ran in 1989-1990 and also featured Allen as a writer.1

His highest-profile television role came when he was cast as Jeff Rosso, the laid-back guidance counselor in Judd Apatow's critically acclaimed single-season series Freaks and Geeks (NBC, 1999-2000). Allen appeared in 11 of the show's 18 episodes.1 Despite being cancelled after one season, Freaks and Geeks developed a devoted following and is now widely regarded as one of the best American teen dramas, making Rosso one of Allen's signature characters.

Allen developed a second recurring character, The Naked Trucker, which began as a sketch in the Los Angeles comedy show 2 Headed Dog.1 In 1998, at the invitation of Largo owner Mark Flanagan, Allen began performing as the Naked Trucker as a solo stand-up act.1 The character attracted the attention of Comedy Central, which paired Allen with David Koechner for The Naked Trucker and T-Bones Show (2007), an 8-episode series.1

Other notable television credits include:3

  • Gilmore Girls (2001-2006): the town troubadour and minister of Stars Hollow, appearing across 4 episodes of the series
  • Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide: recurring role as Mr. Kwest
  • Mr. Show with Bob and David: guest appearances
  • Arrested Development: guest role
  • Trial and Error (NBC, 2017): Dave the Taxidermist, across 6 episodes
  • Love (Netflix): recurring role as Alan
  • Mighty Magiswords (Cartoon Network): voice work
  • King of the Hill: voice work in multiple episodes

Allen's film credits include Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004), Bad Teacher (2011, as Sandy Pinkus), and Sex Tape (2014).3 He has also contributed voice work to SpongeBob SquarePants and other animated productions.

Beyond acting, Allen has performed at nursing homes and events for Alzheimer's patients, singing older popular songs with residents.2 Another character he performs is "Todd Carlin," a fictional hippie relative of comedian George Carlin.

Ghostbusters

Ghostbusters: Answer the Call (2016)

In Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, Allen plays the Electrocuted Ghost, the spirit haunting the Seward Street Subway Station. Within the film's lore, the ghost is that of the first prisoner ever executed by electric chair at an Upper East Side prison, on whose former site the station was later built. The character is also known by the alternate names Sparky and Wes Pinker. Rowan North activates the ghost using a Hyper-Ionization Device, causing it to manifest and attack Patty Tolan and Erin Gilbert.

For filming, Allen was covered in heavy prosthetics and blue lighting rigs to portray the crackling, electrified ghost. The subway tunnel sequence was described by Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig as one of the more unsettling moments of production; Allen reportedly gave both actresses a few genuine shoves during the shoot. Initially the production planned to enhance Allen's costumed performance in post-production, but the complexity of the rig removal led the visual effects team to a different approach: the ghost was fully keyframe-animated in post, with the background replaced entirely so that wire rig traces would not need to be patched over Allen's costume. Zero VFX handled the character's visual effects.

Personal life

As of late 2016, Allen split his time between Salt Lake City, Utah, and Los Angeles.2
