Career

Cheung broke into American film and television in 1975, making early appearances in the San Francisco-based crime drama The Streets of San Francisco and the feature film The Killer Elite, and performing stunts on The Enforcer.1 Over the following decades he became one of the busiest character actors in Hollywood, typically cast as supporting villains, henchmen, and authority figures of Asian descent, spanning Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, and Mongolian roles.1

Among his higher-profile film appearances are Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985), RoboCop 2 (1990), Under Siege (1992), Sneakers (1992, as a Chinese lounge singer opposite Robert Redford), Fist of the North Star (1995), Rush Hour (1998), Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999), Lethal Weapon 4 (1998), and Starsky and Hutch (2004).2 His stunt credits include the 1988 television mini-series War and Remembrance and Tim Burton's Mars Attacks! (1996).2

On the television side, Cheung accumulated recurring and guest appearances across decades of American programming, including M*A*S*H, The Rockford Files, Fantasy Island, Knight Rider, MacGyver, and the soap opera Sunset Beach.1 In Season 4 of Lost he played the Chinese ambassador in the episode "Ji Yeon" (2008).1 In 2013 he provided the voice of Wei Cheng, a Triad boss, in the Rockstar Games title Grand Theft Auto V.1

In May 2008, California's Asian Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus presented Cheung with the Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Award for Excellence in Arts and Entertainment, recognising his long contribution to American screen entertainment.1
